Saladin’s forces took Jerusalem from Christian control which resulted in a call for another crusade. Three kings, Emperor Frederick Barbarossa of Germany, King Phillip II of France, and King Richard I (Richard the Lionheart) led this crusade but accomplished little.
Every story we read this year was more than interesting. Each one had a different plot, different problems and many different personalities from an enormous group of people. I wonder how long it took for them to realize that what they did was incredible? Every last one of these people had to overcome something in their lives no matter how troublesome it seemed to be.
In 771, after his bother passed away, Charlemagne became the king of the Franks, and reigned as the king until the year 814. Charlemagne became known as the “father of Europe”. Charlemagne had one of the biggest and strongest army’s. He was
Power has been defined as the psychological relations over another to get them to do what you want them to do. We are exposed to forms of power from the time of birth. Our parents exercise power over us to behave in a way they deem appropriate. In school, teachers use their power to help us learn. When we enter the work world the power of our boss motivates us to perform and desire to move up the corporate ladder so that we too can intimidate someone with power one day. In Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Kurtz had a power over the jungle and its people that was inexplicable.
From the ashes of the Western Roman Empire, and the Fall of the Merovingian Dynasty came a man who conquered half of europe in a matter of years. Charlemagne a successor of Pepin the Short, along with his brother Carloman owned half of France until Carloman died in 771. After which Charlemagne annexed his brothers lands leaving room for the last big expansion in Europe to come for another thousand years. Charlemagne was, and is still said by some people to be god-like.
St. Henry II encouraged great changes. He was famous because he united the Catholic Church in Europe. St. Henry II evangelized the European people, and many of the pagan people become Catholic. Also, he made reforms among the clergy. He made clergy repay money taken to use for themselves and he promoted chastity among the clergy. St.
As a pope of the Western Empire, Pope Urban II wanted more power over earthly rulers, such as kings and noble vassals. This conflict was known as the Investiture Controversy, which was the struggle of power between the Pope and the political system. This controversy started after the Kings had intruded the pope’s sacred right to run his own business by picking the men who constituted the church. As a result, in order to gain more papal authority over the kings, Urban II decided to shift “the theatre of action in this political conflict to an arena where medieval kings had traditionally reigned supreme, the battlefield. In doing so, Urban usurped the prerogative most secular rulers had claimed traditionally to declare an enemy and muster troops for battle,” conveying how Pope Urban II used the Crusades to assert more authority over the secular rulers by claiming their prerogative of declaring an enemy and mustering troops for battle (Crusades). Through these actions, Pope Urban II was able to boost his position and take control of the battlefield, despite the fact that it was originally meant to be ruled by kings. Moreover, another pope who wanted to assert papal authority over others was Innocent III, who during the Fourth Crusade, wanted to, “impose a Christian monarchy over the whole of the known world. He had long wanted the Eastern Orthodox Church to bow to the authority of Rome,” thereby indicating how like Urban II, Innocent III had also used the Crusades to his political advantage as a way to take control of the Eastern Orthodox Church (Crusades). Innocent III had realized, by using the Crusades, he would be able to gain papal leadership not just over kings, but also over papal leadership in the East as well, thus causing this to serve as a motivation for him in the Crusades. Charlemagne was the song of Pepin the III. He inherited the Frankish crown in 768. He represents the first full synthesis of Roman, Germanic, and Christian elements to create a unified Christian empire. (Sivers, Desnoyers, & Stow, p 313). He did this with strong authority, a Christian identity, and the idea of spreading Christianity throughout the world. The world’s view of him was as a strong leader, who was to be feared in war.
Charlemagne was a big help in the Middle ages. He is also known as Charles the great. Charlemagne name was a legend for centuries. Europe during the darkest part of the dark ages was a chaotic time that was filled with disease and death. One man rose to change this dark time, and this man’s name was Charlemagne. The Holy Roman Empire was ruled by Charlemagne, he tried to restore order and peace throughout the empire by conquering lands and converting his subjects to christianity. The Holy Roman Empire used its land and geography to its advantage, conquered and converted different lands to christianity, promoted education and the building of schools, and created an organized government structure.
Power is seen as the ability to influence or can be seen to control the behavior of people. This power can either be distributed throughout a government or can be in the control of one person. Steven Lukes' book "Power: A Radical View" he acknowlegdes this as he argue that power is when you get someone to do something they would otherwise not normally do. He says that this can be exercised throught three main ways these are Power as decision making, Power as agenda setting and Power as thought control.
Power is authority and strength, which is any form of motive force or energy, ability to act, or control. When too much power is given, a dictatorship government can form, in which all decisions are made by one authority. In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell the author portrays how “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” (Lord Acton).
In my opinion, power can be both positive and negative. There are many individuals that use power to help individuals who truly need helping. However, there are some people to take the word "POWER" to the extreme. For example, if you have an individual who just got promoted to manager, and they try to enforce ridiculous rules on you just to look like a hot shot. This would be using power in a negative way. Also, as a president there are many ways you can use power in a positive setting: making more jobs, providing healthcare, and much more. However, there is some negativity: vetoing an action that is very beneficial to everyone in the community, turning countries against us, and providing fake information to the media to look good. So, therefore,
