Charlemagne, known as Charlemagne the Great, was one of the greatest rulers of his time. Charlemagne was born in the early years of 742 and passed away on January 28, 814. He was laid to rest in his palace in Aachen. Charlemagne is well known today for his bravery, his strong belief in his religion, and the culture that he introduced to his people. (Charlemagne Biography). Charlemagne spent most of his childhood with his father, Pepin. Around the time that Charlemagne and his brother starting to make their own decisions, the two bothers started following their father’s footsteps. They were also learning how to be kings. In the year 768, Pepin died. His death left Charlemagne and his brother, Carloman, kings of their father’s kingdom. The sharing of the throne drove the brothers away from one another. Charlemagne only had to share the thrown for three years because his brother, Carloman, passed away (Charlemagne). In 771, after his bother passed away, Charlemagne became the king of the Franks, and reigned as the king until the year 814. Charlemagne became known as the “father of Europe”. So, Charlemagne gathered his men which lived in his kingdom and formed an army that would make history. Charlemagne rewarded his men and as well as their families with the land in which they conquered. Charlemagne felt that if he brought his people together and went to battle with them and then rewarded them with something as valuable as land, that he would gain the trust and the respect of his people. The thing that made Charlemagne’s life easier was with the people that they invaded with war and ended up conquering, were already Christians and believed the same as Charlemagne, so he would not have to use his army to persuade them so that everyone in his kingdom was the same
