My Leadership Style Leadership styles begin to emerge the day a teacher enters the classroom. Although the leadership is generally confined to leading and developing students at that time, teachers are hard at work trying out methods of management and taking note of what does and does not work. The effective methods become part of the teacher’s leadership style. Although the ineffective methods are generally discarded, they also assist in shaping the teacher’s leadership style. Therefore, I realize my management style must be somewhat fluid. Leaders should strive for consistency whenever possible, but they must also consider the personal attributes of the person they are leading. An employee’s work ethic, personality, and motivation should be considered. In some situations, democratic leadership can be very effective. In other situations, authoritative leadership is required. I am still developing the skill of transitioning from one role to another, as needed. As stated, my preference is to work collaboratively and serve in the role of manager. The first is my collaborating teacher from my original teaching internship. She taught me how to manage students and parents. Although my personal leadership style developed and evolved over the years, there are still many parts that mirror the methods I learned from her. The next major contributor is the principal at the school where I worked as a reading coach. She was an amazing leader and taught me how to include teachers in the decision-making process without relinquishing control as the ultimate leader. This method was completely foreign to me when I came to her school. I had worked under several authoritative principals, and the concept of a leadership team was completely new. In a quote from Tom Peters, he states that “ leaders don’t create followers, they create more leaders.” Working as a lead administrator in a building can have some powerful challenges, but as with anything, the approach is what makes the difference. A good leader will take advantage of the tools around them, knowing that every building has individuals who offer their very own strengths. In focusing on the individual teacher strengths of each specific teacher, a rapport can be built, but most importantly, the outcome will be a stronger building because of the process of spreading the wealth. The real person who has made an impact on not only myself, but a great deal of people in the community over quite a few years is Ms. Barbara Neiman of Brockton Avenue Elementary School. Working in different fields over the course of her life, Ms. Neiman has had to convert to various styles of leadership. Since she has had to alter the ways in which she leads, I selected pieces from three different practices that I believe best fit her: The Path-Goal Theory, Servant Leadership, and a little bit from the Behavioral Approach.
I believe to be a successful leader it is important to not just focus on one particular style, but to incorporate many. If you take a few high points from each style and learn to mesh them together you should have a better understanding of leadership as a whole. This class has taught me that being a leader is a lot more challenging than people may think. Leaders have to wear many different hats in many different situations. To become an effective leader you have to work at it. It may come easy to some, but to others it is a skill that is shaped and molded over time. Thomas Sergiovanni (2015) describes three essential dimensions of leadership as “the heart, head, and hand of leadership.” The heart describes those characteristics within the school leader that reflect personal “beliefs, values, and dreams.” The head of leadership refers to the practice of teaching and educating. Over the course of my professional career in different organizations in the past three years, I have worked under many managers. What is leadership? Leadership is defined as a process by which a individual will influence others to obtain goals. Leaders will guide, direct motivate, or inspire others. Leadership is defined by not only traits but actions as well. Leaders are inspirational, trustworthy and charismatic. Many people may think a manger is leader. Although leadership and management go hand in hand, they are not the same. Everyone has their own beliefs about what characteristics an effective leader should have. To me, communication skills, critical thinking skills, and having a vision are few characteristics of becoming an effective leader. A leader is not only born, but made. Some are born as leaders or some are made to be leaders.
There are a few different types of well known leadership styles, authoritarian, delegative, and democratic. To assess my leadership style I used two online tests to help me determine my style. I felt the results were accurate and I fall into a democratic style/participative style. If I am leading I prefer to include the group and get their feedback on solving issues. However, I still make the final decision after listening to the thoughts of the group on a particular topic. This is considered to be a positive style of leadership that is inspiring to the group involved. The leaders decision making tends to be more accurate due to the input of other experts. (Cite)
