Barriers to effective communication
This can be anything from language barriers, cultural barriers, being prepared, and even being able to get our points across with a minimum of misunderstanding. Gould (1969) reminds us that we need to be consistent in the terminology that we use. If we are not consistent, it will cause our international counterparts many problems when they are trying to figure out what we are trying to say. We need to remember to always speak slowly and clearly. McIntire (2014) reminds us that just because someone does not speak much English they are not hard of hearing. We do not need to raise our voices to make the person understand us. If we rush through what we are trying to communicate, there can be major misunderstandings. When that happens, it takes more time to fix the confusion than it did to cause it. Berardo (2007) states to “focus on clearly enunciating and slowing down your speech. There are many different types of communication mediums to choose from. These include, but are not limited to email, telephone, and video conferencing. Berardo (2007) states, “be mindful not to ‘overuse’ email. While useful, there are times when the medium is likely to be ineffective. When a message is complex and complicated or there is tension or conflict that needs to be resolved, switch to another medium”. When using email, you cannot express feelings and expressions the way that everyone would understand them. By switching to video conferencing, you can express the information more clearly. Although increasing amount of people are learning how to speak english, not having basic understudying of Mandarin or other Chinese dialects can have negative implications on the success of Company ABC. Language barriers can lead to so many issues such as bullying, depression, miscommunication, racism, and so many others. There are so many different languages in America that it is impossible to completely eliminate language barriers all together, but it is such a beautiful thing when a barrier is broken down.
The language barrier is potentially high in situations where cultures are widely differing and languages may not even share a common alphabet, for example between the West and China, making it extremely difficult for expatriates to acquire a high degree of language ability (Selmer, 2006)

Language barriers can cause a person to depend on a friend or his/her kids. A language barrier could cause a person to lose the confidence to learn a new language. For example, when I first started working at a gas station, I hardly communicated with my customers. I was not able to start a conversation with any customer, in fear of “ what if i say something wrong and everybody makes fun of me”, but my dad, mom, and uncle started yelling and getting angry at me for not communicating with any customers. Somehow, I started talking to every customer because my dad forced me to, and that helped me to overcome my fear.
The way people communicate varies widely between, and even within, cultures. One aspect of communication style is language usage. Language has always been perceived as a link between people but it can also constitute a barrier. Across cultures, some words and phrases are used in different ways. For example, even in countries that share the English language, the meaning of "yes" varies from "maybe, I'll consider it" to "definitely so," with many shades in between . Furthermore, communication between cultures which do not share the same language is considerably more difficult . Each culture, has its distinct syntax, expressions and structure which causes confusion in intercultural communication. For example , in Asian countries the word “no” is rarely used, so that “yea” can mean “no” or “perhaps”. Therefore, an American traveling to Japan might be considered impolite if he ignores this rule. Furthermore, individuals who are not comfortable with a certain language may not be taken seriously. Such is the case in the classroom, where a student who has a perfect knowledge of the subject in question may have difficulty expressing his idea due to his inability to write properly and therefore he would not receive the grade he truly deserves. According to the Oxford Dictionary of Current English (Moore, 1997), communication is defined as, “The activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information”. The significance of communication can be found within the context of a human existing as a social being. As a human being manages his or her life in the course of the interaction between other members of the entire society, communication is inevitable. Communication occurs through the medium of a language and it is presented in two different forms which are written and spoken (Brown & Yule, 1983: 1-10). The importance of spoken performance of a language is becoming more prominent over the written performance capability. It is because the ability to speak a language reflects a person’s personality, self image, knowledge of the world, ability to reason, skill to express thoughts in real-time (Luoma, 2004: ix). These days, due to the global trend of internationalisation, the ability to communicate in English is needed as an essential skill. Whenever the international exchange happens, the use of spoken English entails. However, it is not always an easy task for people who use English as a second language to be able to speak to the level of a native speaker. They have to perfectly understand the sound system of English, have almost instant access to proper vocabulary and be able to place words together intelligibly without hesitation. Moreover, they also have to perceive what is being said to them and need to be able to respond appropriately to acquire amiable relations or to accomplish their communicative goals (Luoma, 2004: ix). Therefore, non-native English speakers encounter these barriers and they are subject to make mistakes often. In relation to this matter, this essay argues that there are socio-cultural factors as well as linguistic factors that affect non-native speakers’ communication in English. It provides analysis of several different situations when the use of spoken English has generated miscommunication problems in regards to author’s personal experience.
