According to the textbook there are three ways to intervene with group members. The three ways are intrapersonal interventions, Interpersonal interventions and environmental interventions. Intrapersonal intervention focuses on cognition and the affects, interpersonal intervention focuses on relationships and environmental intervention focuses on seeking change. I might use intrapersonal intervention to see if someone beliefs affect the decision that was or will be made. Which is very important because a persons belief system can have impact on the ay that they think. That is one reason why in social work that social workers have to be mindful about their own personal beliefs having a impact on their practice. An example would be if a person
who was apart of the LGBT community went to seek treatment and the social worker thought that being part of a LGBT community was wrong and displayed hat in her practice. That is clearly discminatio which is not allowed din social work. I would use interpersonal intervention when I want to create a relationship within group or outside the group. I can use environmental intervention to network in order to make the group better. Some specific skill that could be used is active listening, reframing structuring and many more. I believe that if I were a group leader I would be using the environmental intervention the most. Environmental interventions include connecting members to concrete resources, expanding members’ social networks, modifying the contingencies that result when members perform desired behaviors, and planning physical environments to facilitate members’ goal achievement (Toseland & Rivas, 2012). The reason that I think that I would be using environmental intervention the most is because I think that networking is essential to a group’s growth.

To overcome muting group members who live off campus, I will make sure to stop the issue before it grows and becoming informed on the ways it will affect those group members.
As a student, practice is crucial to learn group therapy techniques. In order to achieve these practices, I attended 2 support groups of the same topic. Observation and attendance constructs an idea of how group therapy works. Attending this group was important because of the profoundness of its meaning and experiences I have witnessed.

Outside factors can have a positive or negative affect our view of ourselves and each other. These outside factors are used to persuade and influence group behavior. Persuasion is defined as “the process by which a message induces change in beliefs, attitudes, or behaviors” (Myers, 2010, pg. 230). The principles of this process of persuasion according to researchers, Robert Cialdini and Thomas Davidson, are attractiveness and likeability, reciprocity, social proof, consistency, authority, and scarcity (Davidson, 2008)(Myers, 2010, pg. 237). In the United States 20% of the adult population report that they are living a flourishing life (Keyes, 2002). However, a high percentage reports feeling as if they are ‘‘stuck’’ or ‘‘want more’’ and are yet not diagnosable with a mental disorder (Fredrickson, 2008). Because happiness has been found to be the source of many desirable life outcomes e.g. career success, marriage, and health, it is of importance to understand, how languishing individuals can reach this ideal state: How can well-being be enhanced and misery reduced (Lyubomirsky, King, & Diener, 2005). Over the past decade, research in the field of positive psychology has emerged to provide evidence-based methods to increase an individual’s psychological well-being, through so called positive psychology interventions (PPI’s). PPI’s are treatment methods or intentional activities used to promote positive feelings or behaviour. PPI’s vary from writing gratitude letters, practicing optimistic thinking and replaying positive experiences. A meta-analysis of 51 independent PPI studies demonstrated significant results in the effectiveness of PPI’s increasing well-being (49 studies; r = .29) (Sin & Lyubomirsky, 2009).

For this to occur however, requires an understanding of culture and society, as well as governance and process. Concepts In the first chapter, the therapeutic factors that stood out to me the most was instillation of hope. There is research that says most therapies operate through hope and conviction. Group therapists do all that they can to increase the patient’s belief and confidence in group therapy that works effectively. Also, it is important that therapists believe in themselves. The most important is that members learn from others who have similar problems how therapy can work for them in their life.
Group norms are very important in order to keep a group functioning as a unit or system instead of a collection of individuals. When establishing a working group, it is vital to identify and establish its group norms. It is important to get the group to recognize their existence and influence. This can be accomplished in many different ways: by observing the behavior of group members, interviewing the group, or by having group members identify their own norms.
For instance, if I think my class would benefit from a closer emotional bond, I might divide them into groups to find ways to bond together. The process is to look for ways to improve, create a plan, take action, collect evidence, reflect, and then start all over with the next idea.
