In the book, on page 178, it states that “people choose group counseling to improve their functioning by using the experience of others who are working through similar issues” (Neukrug, 2017). When having a discussion with a client at work, he shared information about the therapy he receives. He stated that he does not like group therapy because he does not trust talking about his personal business in front of others; he stated that he rather receive individual therapy. Being in group therapy can be a dilemma in the human service field because it can cause some people to not feel comfortable completely opening up during counseling or therapy sessions and it can leave some clients not getting their needs met. Before getting into treatment, professionals should help clients fully understand what they are going to be benefiting from group” (Duvall, Kodet, Slone, & Reese, 2015). In a study about family therapy, there were several ethic code principles that were put into place regarding what is acceptable by a human service professional. They included, “practice with competence, do not exploit, treat people with respect, protect confidentiality, and do not harm” (Brook, 1993). However, “in group, a person has less control over and therapy groups generally value the norms of openness and self-disclosure, but there is a danger that "emotionality per se may become a standard for self-expression in the group” (Haeseler, 2016). It is important that each individual entering into group perfectly understands the rights of confidentiality. Ways that this can take place is for every person to sign an informed consent. The client’s rights should be enforced as well as an understanding that everyone has different culture beliefs and values and everyone should be respected. “Clients privacy means the right for clients to choose the time, circumstances, and information others may know about them. When looking at the ethical standards for Human Services Professional. I believe that Standard 38 should be applied: Human service educators are committed to the principles of access and inclusion and take all available and applicable steps to make education available to differently-abled students. I believe that this standards helps professionals learn how to be cultural competent by demonstrating leadership skills on how each person in group should be treated. Everyone in group should be given the opportunity to feel included; however individuals should be included without feeling like they are being forced to speak when they are not ready. This situation can avoid clients from being embarrassed or ashamed to talk about whatever issues they face. Also this can help determine if a client is compatible with the particular
