Evaluation of teaching and learning strategies with highly developed reflections on teaching strategies in enabling students to make progress

Knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a lesson is a very important part of evaluating lessons when trying to achieve high quality teaching and learning. This should occur not only in Spanish lessons but in every subject mentioned in the 2013 National Curriculum. The Education Training Inspectorate (2012) state that teachers should evaluate their own work in order to ensure that they are providing the best possible outcomes by pupils in their care. This reassured the class teacher that all of the children knew who they would be working with, which helped the children to learn effectively. The children in each group became familiar with the member of staff from the teaching team who they would be working with very quickly, which was an important factor when ‘direct teaching’ took place. If the children were unsure of anything then they were able to ask their member of staff questions, which helped to clear any misconceptions that the children had. However, an issue that we were faced with was, having to divide a group of children up when a member of the teaching team was not in school. This is because on this occasion I wasn’t only working with the class teacher I was also working alongside 4 other adults in the same profession. This experience has allowed me to work on Part 2 of the teaching standards (Personal and professional conduct) and the teaching standards which have been mentioned in this assignment. Working towards the 8 teaching standards are also very important because “standards stipulate pre-service or certification credentials as well as on-going development” (Militello et al. 2013). As teachers there are a number of changes which can take place there for developing oneself is an on – going process which means that teachers must continue to develop themselves to meet the criteria of the teaching standards.
