INTRODUCTION A leader is one of the main component of an organization. There is no organization without a leader. A leader is a person who have the power or authority to lead, guide, or command other individual, a team, or an organization. As an organization is a tool to achieve an objective, there is a need of a leader to lead everyone in the organization to achieve the objective. Then to be a leader a person need what is called leadership. Leadership is interpret as a process. It is a process of social influence or we can say ability to influence others in order to accomplish a common task or achieving common objective. We don’t need to see ethical leadership as a weak or a soft-hearted concept of a leader. An ethical leader that bring out characters such as forgiveness, love and trust can become an advantage to that leader. These character or value are able to make his or her subordinate to bring out their hidden capabilities that is give positive impact to their work, increase the commitment of the employee to their own work and company, also get rid of the feeling of distrust by the employee to the leader. Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or a set of goals. Many scholars have given different definitions of leadership: Leaders are people who do the right thing; managers are people who do things right (Professor Warren G. Bennis), Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it (Dwight D. Eisenhower).
Looking at the first word in ethical leadership we see, as stated in the Webster-Merriam dictionary, ethical is defined as “following accepted rules of behavior: morally right and good”. When we think of someone who is ethical we, first, think of someone who ‘follows the rules’. By following the rules I mean someone who in the eyes of the majority is morally sound. Having strong morals is what I believe the key is to an ethical person. On the other side of the definition of ethical is defining it as having inside oneself the desire to do what’s right over what is wrong. When we speak about someone who is ethical this desire is one that is not dependent on external forces i.e. no one can sway an ethical person’s mindset.
The study indicated that the influences processes employed by transformational and transactional leaders may be driven by different ethical values that also appear to indirectly impact follower attitudes toward corporate social responsibility. Transformational leadership was strongly associated with leader deontological values, suggesting that such leaders’ strong beliefs in altruism, universal rights, and principles lay the groundwork for enacting the key motivational and inspirational behaviors that drive leadership outcomes in organizations. Transformational leaders’ ability to demonstrate idealized attributes and behaviors, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration behaviors rest on a strong deontological ethical foundation. A leader’s beliefs in selflessness, treating followers, and teammates as ends and viewing leadership practices as having ethical implication regardless of their consequences in any organization. These views facilitate an authentic demonstration of transformational behaviors in the stakeholder view of corporate social responsibility. Leader teleological ethics was found to predict active transactional leadership behavior, indicating that a leader’s belief in reciprocity norms, the maximization of mutual interests, and judging the ethical content of leadership acts according to their consequences were key to facilitating contingent reward and active performance monitoring
Y Scouts describes an ethical leader as someone who is not afraid to do what is right even if it is unpopular or inconvenient (Y Scouts, n.d.). They also state that some of the traits an exemplary ethical leader will display are honesty, justice and respect to others (Y Scouts, n.d.). The leader I think exhibits exemplary ethical conduct is Travis Zarlingo. He is a Foreman for a construction company in Las Vegas and always shows ethical conduct at his company. First, he is always honest. He is open and truthful with his employees and fellow co-workers. He speaks the truth whether people like it or not. German Philosopher, Immanuel Kant once said, “In law a man is guilty when he violates the rights of others. In ethics he is guilty if he only thinks of doing so” (1800). The word ethics refers to “character” and “conduct” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). It is deeply “concerned with the virtuousness of individuals and their motives” and “the kinds of values and morals an individual or a society finds desirable or appropriate” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). Thus, “in regards to leadership, ethics is concerned with what leaders do and who leaders are” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330). Ethics in leadership allows leaders to make decisions regarding what is virtuous or not in a situation. All throughout the history of American government, difficult decisions have been made and the fight for ethics has always been “implicitly or explicitly involved” (Northouse, 2015, p. 330).
The ethical leadership in the organization will help the organization to run well. The organization will grow more largely and will accomplish their goals with good satisfaction between the leader and the member. The ethical leadership in organization is being the foundation or the rules of the leader in order to make a good leadership in the organization. The good ethical leadership is not just run by the leader but also the management and the member. The management will be the system of the role of the leadership. The member also have an important role to make a good implication of the eathical leadership by trust the leader, if the member trust the leader it will make them to follow the leader and not betrayed to the leader. The good leader also need to have any other thing like charisma, the charismatic leader will lead a good leadership inside the organization. The member will respect to the leader and will follow the leader thought. To make the leadership run smoothly the organization need a good communication, if the leader and member have good communication it will reduce the unethical leadership. Finally, ethical framework alone won’t help achieve ethical leadership. In the theory, ethical thought must always be followed by action. Holding ethical principles is not enough to constitute to ethical leadership.
A leader is described as a person who guides others and has authority and influence over others. They work to influence others into meeting certain goals. There is no right or wrong definition of a leader and there is no recipe that ensures effective leadership. Successful leaders have a good balance of vision, influence, and power. Leaders gain their authority from their ability to influence others to get the work done; because of this, anyone has the potential to be a leader. (Finkelman. 2012, p15)
Organizations are constantly tested with various moral and ethical problems and dilemmas. Organizational leaders are the key to establishing an ethical climate in the workplace. By understanding and improving their own moral reasoning, and the biases that affect moral judgment, they enable themselves to make better decisions. This has a catalytic effect that positively increases organizational climate, ultimately improving all organizational behavior.
Leadership is a skill of having the ability to guide someone, or something. Leaders are people that others look at. Leaders are often looked at during good times to see how they handle success. Leaders are also looked at during the hard times. When things aren't going well, leaders are looked at to see how they handle these hard times.
Leaders that possess good ethical standards can assist the organization in mentoring employees that care for their fellow employee and the organization.
In the era of continuously evolving business scenario where organizational structure is getting more and more complex, the task of leadership is getting tougher. Business leaders are dealing with volatile economic climate, political policies and growing international competition. Innovation in technologies, emergence of knowledge based business tools and industry dealing with them, ruthless media and publicity mechanism, an aware and demanding consumer and environmental resource concerns put forth a complex mix of challenges that managers must face to be successful. Further, in the aftermath of some recent financial events ethics are going to play a bigger role and leaders throughout the world will be tested by the choices they make.
In order to provide an accurate analysis of this case study, one must understand the characteristics that consist with an ethical or unethical leader. According to Eisenbeiß and Brodbeck (2014), an ethical leader is best described as being honest, having charisma, pursues increased integrity, leads by example, a visionary leader, enacting morals values, empowers others to succeed, and routinely makes sacrifices for the greater good. On the contrary, an unethical leader can be described as scheming, dishonest, unjust, egotistic, typically manipulates other in order to succeed, and will always put themselves before others. With these simple definitions, a person can clearly distinguish the difference between the two (pp. 352-357).
Many people believe that leadership is simply being the first, biggest or most powerful. Leadership in organizations has a different and more meaningful definition. A leader is someone who sets direction in an effort or task and influences or motivates people to follow that direction. Affect Ethical leadership is leadership that is directed by respect for ethical beliefs and values and for the dignity and rights of others.
