In the era of continuously evolving business scenario where organizational structure is getting more and more complex, the task of leadership is getting tougher. Business leaders are dealing with volatile economic climate, political policies and growing international competition. Innovation in technologies, emergence of knowledge based business tools and industry dealing with them, ruthless media and publicity mechanism, an aware and demanding consumer and environmental resource concerns put forth a complex mix of challenges that managers must face to be successful. Further, in the aftermath of some recent financial events ethics are going to play a bigger role and leaders throughout the world will be tested by the choices they make.
Efforts have been made from time to time to identify the leadership challenges organizations are expected to face over the next 10 years and the steps needed to address them, among these following major sets of challenges have emerged
Developing managerial effectiveness: This includes challenge of developing the relevant skills - such as time management, prioritisation, strategic thinking, decision-making, and getting up to speed with the job - to be more effective at work. Standardization of norms, work processes and output not only result in achieving tangible success such as optimization of resources and maximization of profits but also in intangible success such as greater job satisfaction and goal oriented rather than a process oriented mood. Thus, managerial effectiveness is all about streamlining the processes and ensuring smooth transition of the methodologies for quick emergence of decision giving sufficient time to act on the same. In the changing socio-economic structure of the world and challenges of multicultural business, a leader’s job is getting tougher day-by-day and they need to evolve continuously to stand up to the challenge. Also in today’s times, it’s absolutely necessary that leadership is grown from the seeds of moral integrity, spiritual wisdom and chaste conduct in the future leaders. Any organization thus, will have to allow the individuals to grow and contribute in the process to allow effective leadership to emerge. It is also necessary that every organization needs to make conscious efforts to imbibe a sense of responsibility among its incumbents and facilitate the understanding of challenges faced by the communities struggling to sustain themselves. Constant learning and faster learning are the keys to success in the twenty-first century.
