Ethics of employees are a large part in their daily life. Ethics within employees can cause an employee to be an asset to an organization or the lack of ethics can cause an employee to be a discredit to themselves and the organization. Unethical behavior can stem from a variety of sources and the situation that the employee are faced with can dictate which path they take in making decisions. Certain situations can cause an employee to act unethically. Addressing unethical behavior is the responsibility those in managerial positions but all employees have the ability to take action as well. Communication between managers and employees leads to ways that can potentially complete organization missions more efficiently. Simple communication can result in a change in how employee’s complete goals and acquire additional training as needed to complete goals that are set. Employees have a lot to offer an organization, which is why the organization hired those employees, but employees have a mind and spirit that needs to be focused on as well. Leaders that indulges in unethical behavior have to live with the consequences it may cause for themselves, the staff and the organization. What we have learned thus far is leader that inhabits unethical behavior are those that lack the moral compass and the trust, respect of their peers and those that work for them will be none existent. Could there be some circumstantial reasons for unethical behavior in leaders? Gomes and Grant are not the only two employees that have faced an ethical issue in the workplace, employees in numerous different organizations encounter similar dilemmas. However, they should all consider the consequences that will follow if they choose to act unethically. Rather, employees should possess and abide by a code of ethics so as not to potentially put their reputation and future in danger along with that of the organizations they work for.
Effective organizations are able to clearly define their ethical expectations by setting high moral standards, writing codes of conduct, and utilizing mentoring programs. “Masters provide your servants with what is right and fair, because you know that you also have a Master in heaven” (Col. 4:1). When organizations clearly define their ethical expectations to their subordinates, they are much more likely to treat their customers fairly. Customers who are treated fairly are much more likely to be loyal consumers of the products or services that the company provides. This helps to establish a loyal customer base that a business can depend upon, thus providing a predictable source of annual revenue. If an employer treats their employees with respect, honesty, and with candor they’ll give the customer 110% (Rion, 2001).

Leaders of pharmaceutical companies have been found knowing about distribution of unsafe products. Too much objectivity of a leader puts all his subordinates at pressure to reach a particular expectation such as quota and minimum expectations. Ineffective leaders are too much technical in delineating their works without considering employee satisfaction to his/her work.
Ethics in business is a highly important concept, as it can affect a company’s profits, salaries paid to employees and CEOs, and public opinion, among many other aspects of a business. Ethics can be enforced by company policies and guidelines, set a precedent when a company is faced with an important decision, and are also evolving thanks to new technology and situations that arise due to technology usage. Businesses have a duty to maintain their ethical responsibilities and also to help their employees enforce these responsibilities in and out of the workplace. However, ethics and the foundation for them are not always black and white. There are many different ethical theories, however Utilitarianism, Kant’s Deontological ethics, and Virtue ethics are three of the most well known theories in existence. Each theory is distinct in that it has a different quality used to determine ethicality and allows for a person to choose which system of ethics works best with both the situation and his or her personal ethical preferences.

Business ethics are sometimes depicted as resolving conflicts where one option appears to be the correct choice. There are many different ethical dilemmas that are faced by managers and leaders everyday that are highly complex and have no clear choice or guidelines to assist in making the choices for resolution. There are times when an employee has to decide whether or not to cheat, lie, steal, or break their contract.
To provide an example of a breach of ethical conduct in the workplace, we may remember the case of a financial manager in a corporation that decided not to pay overtime to some employees. After a deep outside investigation, the company was summoned with thousands of dollars to remedy the payment that was supposed to be paid to all employees who worked more than forty hours per week. Again, it is needed more than just a booklet stating that the company adheres to the code of business ethics. It is needed serious managers that can run the company with the most seriousness as possible. Consequently, any written codes of business ethics, regardless of how well it has been crafted, need people that adhere to its internal content with a serious desire to do the right thing.
This manifests in a leaders tendency to overrate themselves and their work. People typically view themselves on a higher level than their peers, which can have them overlooking their own short comings. Also, people are more inclined to take credit for success and blame external factors for failures. Lastly, there are conflicts of interest. Hughes et al. (2014) cite that “we may be conscious of potential conflicts of interest, but even then, though, we misjudge our own ability to discount the extent to which the conflict actually biases our perception of the situation in our own favor” (p. 149). All of these are biases impact moral reasoning. When leaders allow these biases to impact their behavior and decision making, it results in an unhealthy organizational culture and unethical climate. Conversely, when leaders fully understand these biases and continually work towards improving their moral reasoning, they can positively affect organizational culture and create an ethical climate, which ultimately influencing all organizational
One factor that can lead to unethical behavior is narcissism. Someone who has narcissistic have a propensity for acting unethically. These leaders are self-absorbed and their focus is on themselves and what benefits themselves (Doty & Fenlason, 2013). Unfortunately, this type of behavior creates an ego and leads to personal career building through using other employees to get ahead. Narcissistic leaders do not have the emotional intelligence which focuses on others.

Ethics in the workplace is a very important thing to have. Without a sense of ethicality in the workplace there are many things that could go wrong. By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Emphasis is placed on communication being clear by being transmitted strongly.
When I think of ethics, I think of the angel on my left shoulder telling me to do the “right” thing, and the devil on my right, tempting me to join the dark side. This scenario deals with what is “right” or what is “wrong” and where my morals will lie in the end. But who is to say what is right and wrong? Ethics is such a trivial word because every person, company, and culture has a different idea of what is considered ethical or what is considered unethical. Throughout this paper, I will address my personal view on ethics, and how I believe it effects the workplace and today’s society.
