Can you imagine a world where there is a complete absence of government power- one in which there is no infringement on human freedom? Individuals in a dystopian society live their lives based on fear, not knowing what would happen next in the hands of their daunting government. Mutually, ‘Animal Farm and ‘V for Vendetta’ express the conflict in a society between the government who attempts to control as many aspects of their citizens’ life and a protagonist who realizes that they are being manipulated and no longer wants to live this way. Propaganda is an important tool to every government. In Animal Farm it is used by the pigs to influence and manipulate the animals’ opinions. Additionally, propaganda is used by Squealer in his speeches to convince the animals that the pigs need to be well fed because they make important decisions that will affect future life on the farm. It is often said that unity is strength, but how equal are these animals compared to their government? In a similar way the film ‘V for Vendetta’ shows that propaganda, through media, can shape the opinions and mindsets of a group of people. London’s oppressive government brain-washes their society to believe the slogan “Strength through Unity, Unity through Faith”. V is attempting to remove the distorted truth from society in order to force the people to question their faith in the government. He wants the people to think intellectually about the society they live in- impairing the governments’ message of conformity. The Norsefire government suppresses unsatisfactory news to control the country. Through the manipulation of these media platforms, the government filters the information provided to the citizens which steer their thinking and actions in one
