Do schools really need to know where students are at all times? Putting tracking devices in students’ I.D. cards has and causes many issues. The cost of getting technology on a card every year is out of schools’ budget. Many child molesters or criminals can easy hack the system and watch your child’s every move. Plus, students take their I.D. cards other places than school, for example they have to take them home. Tracking devices in students I.D. cards is crossing the line. Almost every day the school is trying to get money out of their students. Being a student myself, I have experienced this from class fees to dress down days. Every year high schools gain at least 100 students, and as we all know, technology has a very large price …show more content…
tag. To purchase more and more each year would be outrides. The reason the schools would want these I.D.s is so they can make sure they won’t lose money by students not being in homeroom.
You see, for every student not in homeroom, the school will lose $40. The cost of this technology and the loss of students really being absent, will take away from other things like textbooks and sports. Overall, it’s in the schools best interest not to spend the money on these tracking sources. Schools are very big on safety, but having these tracking devices on students might not be as safe as they think. Matthew Simpson, a policy from American Civil Liberties Union of Texas, said the technology was so easy to acquire. This means people outside might be able to track a student if they desire. Due to easy access to students, the crime rate may go up in the area. This result will not even put a bad name on the schools but also gives parents a reason to sue. Getting sued is most likely the worst thing that can happen to a school. With this in mind, who knows what else the schools might do? For example, in 2010, the Lower Merion School district in Pennsylvania began watching students at home as well as in school. The way they were doing this was by inserting spyware into students laptops, which sent images from the computers webcam to the school server every 15 seconds. By just going on Google, you can see that there are cameras small enough to be inserted
on a students I.D. card. Once again by doing as such, the school may be sued. The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights that prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and requires any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause. Therefore, breaking the constitution, can lead to a major outcome. The truth is, the schools reasoning for this whole idea is money. All the reasons I listed, leads up to money. Wither its by making sure students are in class or getting sued. Overall, this system is just not worth acknowledging. The school will end up spending money, thinking they will get more in return, but really losing more money. Not even is it bad for their budget, its also crossing the line. Watching the students at all time is just simpily crossing the line. For sure, parents will agree with me on this.
Grabber- We are all privileged to live in a free nation, where we can do what we desire. But, what if one day you were told that your school can monitor your every action on the interweb and can punish you for your online activities on and off campus? Well, certainly many students would protest without hesitating, for that they would no longer have privacy.
The cost of a smart-card system can be costly up front, but saves money in the long run because of its effectiveness. The average price to change out a doors locking mechanism was about 500 dollars in the early 2000’s. Robers, Zhang, & Truman (2010) estimated from July 2008 through June 2009 there were more than 1.2 million nonfatal crimes at school, including 619,000 thefts, and countless acts of vandalism. School vandalism alone exceeds 1 billion dollars per year to school districts across the United States (Thomas, 2006). Garret (2001) research explained how most teachers and students believed that violence occurs in hallways or under staircases, in the cafeteria, in the parking lot
To begin with no technology is 100% secure, if the kids’ location can be visible to hackers, this information can be used to harm them. In the Article, Irvine mentions “Parents are notified by text message, e-mail, or phone” about their kids activities at school. This information is also risk as emails can be hacked, Imagine it can be used to kidnap kids of a rich or high official for ransom. Privacy is a serious matter, and hackers can also use technology to commit crimes against such families. Irvine says, “High-tech methods to track everything” are available, that's means that there is always someone watching. Irvine says, “Big Mother” or “Big Father” who is watching, but it can also be “Big Kidnapper” or “Big Sex Offender.” In other words, their kids will be under surveillance of many unknowns. Also anybody might forget their phone in public places and what if some crazy person got it? That person can use this information and see all the communication and find out where the kids are going. As a result, these devices can be tools for hackers to use to harm the kids...
The scholarly article, “Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phones”, written by Marilyn Gilroy, discusses the controversial issue of the debate between the effects of cell phones and education. Marilyn Gilroy was a communication professor at the Bergen Community College for 18 years, and since 1992 has written multiple publications for the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. In “Invasion of the Classroom Cell Phones” Gilroy talks about the growing problem with cell phones and what the device is causing for students, parents, administrators, and schools everywhere, while also noting the inevitability of these handhelds in today’s society.
Abortion was legally being done since 1880 in the United States. During that time, many states have started to ban abortion. Even though abortion was illegal in many places, it was still being practiced. Many by licensed physicians. They “risked losing their license to perform the abortions”. Even though abortion was illegal in most states, women all over the United States were getting abortion illegally. Some even performed self-abortions with “hanger and needles”. “Also many women would go to other countries and get an abortion”. Many felt the banning abortions was a way to limit women’s rights which led to many court cases. (ourbodiesourselves.org)
According to the New York Civil Liberties Union in four well-known areas of New York the number of public surveillance cameras has rose from 769 in 1998 to 4,468 in 2005. This seems like a huge increase but if you think about it really isn’t. In a period of seven years there were 3,699 new cameras, which lined the streets keeping the citizens safe. These cameras, which are all over the world cause no harm to anyone, all they do is keep us safe and help the authorities know when we are in need of help faster. People who are against surveillance cameras will say they are an invasion of privacy, but that is completely false. The cameras are only put in public places where there are large numbers of people. If you are in a large area with a lot of people you don’t have any privacy then ether. I think that surveillance cameras are a good idea.
There is quite a controversy surrounding the use of tracking badges, on students or otherwise. “Is it security, or spying?” that’s the main question, and it seems that the controversy is postponing the installation of this new technology, yet the problems against the badges are flimsy at best. They should be used in schools, honestly people should try the badges out before they dismiss them as being spy machines. Students should wear tracking badges because they will be less likely to misbehave if they know they’re being tracked, the badges can also help police to find lost kids or kidnaped kids, plus parents won't have to worry about whether or not their child is where they’re supposed to be.
Based on an article by Fast Facts written by National Center for Statistics, “…93 percent of public schools reported that they controlled access to school buildings by locking or monitoring doors during school hours.” Though this number may seem like a lot, it does not make sure every student is safe. Based on this data, out of 100 schools there are still 7 schools that do not have this safety. This would allow for someone to walk in, armed with a weapon, and the school would not know who entered the building. Also, if the doors were not locked, like some schools across the country, anyone could walk in unrealized. From the same article, Fast Facts, National Center for Statistics also states that,”Other safety and security measures reported by public schools included the use of security cameras to monitor the school (75 percent)…” Similarity, this is the same as before. Outsiders or students could easily bring in a weapon into the school if the school was not monitored. This is sadly the case since 1 out of 4 schools do not have a camera system. Overall, many schools across the nation are lacking simple security measurements to keep schools
As Internet communications and interactions and between students and the school staff members become more widespread, school rules for student behavior is important. Students carry PED’s or (personal electronic devices), sending and receiving communications inside and outside school, so two key questions exist regarding search and seizure of such
"The government should not be able to keep tabs on student because it's being creepy and it’s wrong to see what little boys and girls do and it’s not up to them it’s up to parents to keep them safe. Kids need to learn and sometime they don't want to talk to their parents about it so they go to the internet for help. True kids can get endangered because of it this is why parents should check kids phone once in awhile to make sure there not going on anything there not supposed to.
Kids should be able to keep their phones out in school because they might need to contact someone out of school. The mayor of New York(Bill de Blasio) changed the policy of having phones in school because
Schools should ways to protect schools like guards and other ways. In West Hartford, schools have added security guards and increased armed police presence. They built something called "mantraps," vestibules with locking doors on either side. They glazed their windows so they can't be smashed in”.”There are panic buttons linked to the police and 300 security cameras. And they made sure that classroom doors can be locked from the inside — they traditionally locked only from the outside.” If schools had guards they can stop an intruder from doing
Do teachers change when an administrator evaluates them? Do parents worry too much about their kids being in school? Have many students around the world been falsely accused of something they didn’t do? All of these problems can be eliminated with one little piece of technology hanging from the ceiling. That little piece of technology is a surveillance camera which can be placed almost anywhere. Many schools are determining whether or not to install security cameras in classrooms. Those who have, have seen dramatic changes in teachers, students, and even parents. Cameras have many helpful factors. For instance, cameras can be used to train future teachers, broadcast to students at home, and deal with bullying. Having cameras in a classroom environment are beneficial for students, teachers, parents, and schools because they hold teachers accountable, help students improve their behavior, and evaluate teacher and student interactions.
By doing attendance on computers, it saves a lot of time and confusion for schools. No one has to go around and pick up attendance and it does not have to be recorded anymore. Just one easy, quick step and it is all taken care of. In my opinion, although computers can be very helpful, it might take a while and some long hours for a teacher to switch over from running a classroom one way to using computers in their daily lesson plans.
The educational process is multi dimensional for student teachers and then study materials, but since technology has come in our lives, it has become the last that completes the education process.
