Inside the Hunt
As the great comedian, Paul Rodriguez, once said, “Hunting is not a sport. In a sport both sides should know that they’re in the game.” Like in one of the most iconic pieces of literature and its movie adaptations, The Most Dangerous Game has a man named Sanger Rainsford who is considered to be a world-class hunter, scouts and kills animals for fun. But his view of hunting is quickly changed when he was forced onto the other side of the hunt. And now the hunter has become the hunted. The book and the movie adaptation have many similarities, but at the same time there is a countless number of differences
The book version starts with Sanger Rainsford is sailing with a group of friends on his yacht. He walks out out of his room to get a quick smoke break. Rainsford clumsily falls overboard without anyone noticing him, and later swims to an isolated island named Shipwreck Island. Covered in jungle, he believes that he has no chance of someone rescuing him. Rainsford hears the screech of what sounds like an animal in agony. So he decides to track the source of the screech.BANG, He hears a loud gunshot that quickly ends the screech, so he decides to go in that general direction. Then Rainsford encounters what seems to be the only two other people on the island, the insane Russian General Zaroff and his

behemoth of an assistant, Ivan. Sanger Rainsford was allowed to stay in General Zaroff’s house. Ivan shows Rainsford the room where he can stay at. During dinner, Zaroff tells Rainsford that he had discovered a new kind of species to hunt, humans. General Zaroff has an interesting background. When he was a child, he shot his fathers turkey, which led him to a love of hunting.General Zaroff also had a military background, which made him go mad. So, with the mixture of hunting and killing people, that gave him a lust for human blood. Zaroff began to hunt any newcomer that has taken steps on the island, that is why there is only one other person living in the island with him. Rainsford decides that he will go to bed. When early morning came, he is awakened by a loud gunshot. Rains ford demands to leave the island immediately. Zaroff does not allow him to, and forces him to take part in his so called “game”. The game is that Zaroff will hunt Rainsford down for three straight days, and if Rainsford survives he is allowed to leave the island. Rainsford runs to the other side of the jungle and set up a trap that was meant to kill Zaroff. But sadly, it ends up only hurting Zaroff and Zaroff claims that he will kill him the next day. Rainsford continues to run deeper and deeper into the jungle, but falls into a pit of quicksand.
One of Zaroff’s hounds is nearby and charges straight for Rainsford. He manages to escape just in time and tricks the hound to fall into the pit and die. In the distance he notices Zaroff, Ivan, and their vicious hounds. He quickly escapes from that situation, until he reaches the edge of a cliff. Instead of facing the Zaroff and his dogs, he decides to jump off the cliff into the body of water under it. Surprised by that Zaroff heads back to his house, but waiting for him is Rainford standing in his bedroom. Rainsford kills Zaroff, and sleeps in his
bed. The movie adaptation has many differences, starting with some minor changes to just changes that massively affect the plot of the story. The movie starts out with Sanger Rainsford having a chat with his associates who are sailing with him. Then suddenly, the boat crashes and the only one to survive the crash was Sanger Rainsford. Floating unconscious, Rainsford drifts to the island named Brac Island instead of Shipwreck Island. He hears the sound of a birdlike screech (which was supposed to be a gunshot) and decides to track where the sound came from. And Rainsford later encounters the evil Count Zaroff, along with two other people. One of them was Zaroff’s giant assistant Ivan and a beautiful woman named Eve Trowbridge, who was just an added character to make the movie look more attractive to a multitude of audiences. Count Zaroff decides to play a game with Rainsford. Count Zaroff hunts down Rainsford in just a one day span. Rainsford takes Eve with him into the jungle because they had made a connection before. When they get a big lead on Zaroff, they decide to build a trap that hopefully might kill him. It ends up barely skinning him, so he decides to go back to his house to recover from the injury.
“My life was taken from me-by one of you !” ( Raskin, pg. 34). In the book The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin a series of roller coasters comes up in this murder mystery. This story has an up and down of emotional events. The Westing Game book and movie contains many similarities and differences that are worth exploring.
I have recently finished the book and movie The Westing Game. The book had more detail than the movie Get a Clue. They changed some of the characters and removed some of the character in the movie. I will talk about the characters and the movie. The Westing Game was a great book.
Where does the line of sport and murder intersect in hunting? Is it when the species being hunted is able to reason? Or is it when the species being hunted looks just like the hunter? In both movie and film, we see a man fight for his life and another going against all codes of ethics. While Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” and Ernest B. Schoedsack’s film adaptation both have several similarities, the difference are also apparent in each respective media.
After falling off his ship and forced to swim to a mysterious island, Rainsford is faced with a challenge. General Zaroff traps him in a “game” that requires Rainsford to use his skills to survive. He is hunted for three days; where he was chased, tracked down, and shot at. General Zaroff led the hunt to try to kill Rainsford. General was equipped with more firepower and help from his henchman and dogs. But even with his much greater opponent, he was able to survive. Rainsford used his many skills to defeat and kill his enemy. He used quick wit to make traps that would slow Zaroff and kill his dogs and henchman. Then he used his intelligence to escape Zaroff by swimming away, but sneaking back into his own mansion.
For many people, hunting is just a sport, but for some it is a way of life. In Rick Bass’s “Why I Hunt” he explains how he got to where he lives now and what he thinks of the sport of hunting. There are many things in the essay that I could not agree more with, and others that I strongly disagree. Overall this essay provides a clear depiction of what goes through the mind of a hunter in the battle of wits between them and the animal.
A skilled hunter sprints desperately through the woods, realizing the futility of hiding from his greatest foe: his own kind. Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” is the story of a hunter that becomes the hunted. The story explores the sense of extreme terror the protagonist feels being pursued by a psychopath living on a mysterious island. This protagonist, Rainsford, has many traits that aid him in his battle with the general. By demonstrating his cunning, sly, and remorseful traits, Rainsford shows the story’s theme of “walking a mile in someone else’s shoes”.
“You’re a big-game hunter, not a philosopher. Who cares how a jaguar feels?”. The story “The Most dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell introduces an adventurous type of thriller with two main characters named Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff. Both of which are hunters who in the story play a “game” invented by General Zaroff out of pure fear of becoming bored of the hunt. General Zaroff is a big fan of the hunt and everything he says about the hunt is to be taken serious. Rainsford and General Zaroff are described to be excellent hunters through the traps Rainsford makes, all the big game Zaroff has hunted, but Zaroff is better at hunting through the fact that the hunt has began to bore and he needs more of a challenge hunting humans.
Have you ever wondered what being hunted in the jungle would feel like? For one man this nightmare becomes a dangerous reality. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man named Sanger Rainsford faces conflict while being stranded on what he thinks is a deserted island. While on the island he falls into the hands of the maniacal Russian General Zaroff. How many steps is one man willing to take in order to ensure his safety. How far is one man willing to go to fulfil his quest of hunting the most dangerous game. Although both characters are very similar, there are inherent differences that are brought forth during the struggle for survival.
Being hunted on an island is an experience like no other, whether it is a film or a short story. “The Most Dangerous Game” started off as a short-story, but was later turned into a film. Like many other films, the director has done some adjustments that differ from the short-story. The plot, setting, and characters were revised from the original form in the short-story. However, the difference in the characters was the most influential part that changed throughout the film.
Rainsford headed off and had spent two hours making his way across a bush all the while repeating the phrase, “I must keep my nerve” (Connell 11). Rainsford tried to keep calm in a terrifying situation because he wanted to live. He was being motivated by the idea of living so he kept persevering. Rainsford had jumped into the sea to get away from the General and it had worked because later that night Rainsford snuck into the General's room and challenged him. Rainsford ultimately won the game and won the privilege of sleeping Zaroff's excellent bed, because we can infer that Rainsford killed him (Connell 15). Rainsford took a chance and jumped into the sea because he knew he wasn’t going to give up without a fight. When Rainsford showed up in his room he knew the general would not let him leave so he challenged him in order for him to stay alive, again taking a chance in order to live. Throughout the story Rainsford had changed, leading up to this moment when he won the game, stayed alive, and killed the general. In the beginning Rainsford was motivated by the great sport of hunting, but then near the end Rainford's only motivation was to stay
Rainsford was forced to choose between life and death by Zaroff. Zaroff tells Rainsford that he hunts people as a type of wild game and takes them hunting first then gives them a few survival things and have to survive for three days in order to win.
Richard Connells “The Most Dangerous Game” is a short story which illustrates how calm analytical thinking can increase your odds of survival and controlling panic. We are introduced to the protagonist and main character, Sanger Rainsford, who is a big game hunter and a WW1 veteran. The story starts off with a conversation between Whitney and Rainsford discussing the island, so we can understand the reputation it holds. Whitney is a fellow hunter, a flat character and used mainly as a plot tool.
When Rainsford falls off of the boat, he has to try his best to stay afloat until he can find something to latch on to. He swims vigorously until he reaches Ship-Trap Island. "Jagged crags appeared to jut up into the opaqueness... dense jungle came down to the very edge of the cliffs." It is midday and he is just searching for a place to rest when he runs into Ivan, the astonishingly large guard of the island. Zaroff, the owner of the island, joins in on their conversation about hunting. The conversation is interesting to say the least. Zaroff says, "You'll find this game worth playing…your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess! And the stake is not without value, eh?" Zaroff is trying to point out that he finds interest in hunting humans, and he wants to know if Rainsford will rise to the challenge. Rainsford is left with a choice to make; will he fight Zaroff, or will he decline and get killed by Ivan. The choice in this situation is pretty self- evident.

Rainsford overcomes many obstacles, and in return he receives that special feeling of satisfaction in his body. To start, he overcomes the thought of him being weak. Furthermore, he conquers learning the value of even an animal’s life. Not to mention, he defeats becoming the hunted, when he is the hunter. In the short story Sanger Rainsford outwits General Zaroff in the battle of “The Most Dangerous
