A key concept of self-directed learning is to put yourself to have no external motivation or at least very little.You must be the director of your life and education not allowing menial disturbances to interfere. You have to be very independent In your decisions and lifestyle. Being independent gives you a strong base for your personality, not allowing it to be easily diminished. Being strong and independent allows you to not be weakened by failure and to be more persistent in your work. Setting goals for yourself creates an individual growth. In the article, “Why we are looking at the ‘value’ of college all wrong” by Valerie Strauss, Nelson discusses how an independent learner is able to teach themselves and learn from the challenges they tend to face. “The educated graduate is an independent learner…able to direct his or her own learning in accordance with the challenges that life presents in the circumstances of his or her own life.(Strauss 1)” For example, I want to become Registered Nurse; therefore, I write that down as one of my goals. However, I would then have to write everything else in order to become a Registered Nurse. Having a goal set that I want to become a RN, I now have something to strive at and to motivate myself to reach that goal. Therefore, creating goals helps establish what direction I am trying to go in, and also allows me to figure out how to solve a problem. Another example is if I failed a test, I will try to examine the errors within my work; however, I will then create a goal for myself to make sure I do better on test the next time. Finding the errors and creating goals to fix the errors makes me an independent learner. I am taking the charge that I want to do better; therefore, I am going to create a goal to help me succeed. During the course of the quarter, I feel that I have progressed somewhat. I've gained a lot of knowledge on rhetorical strategies and how to present arguments effectively. In the writings I have written, I feel that each writing works towards meeting the course goals. Logos, ethos, and pathos were strategies and ideas we were introduced to (if not already in the past) and were built upon throughout the quarter. The knowledge gained over the course of the quarter weren't only those three types of appeals. Rhetorical strategies like proposals helped reinforce the course and using rhetorical analysis in different situations have become easier throughout the quarter. I believe that I have made sufficient progress towards becoming a better writer this way.

Curiosity has always kept my mind wandering and looking for new things to learn and discover. I often find myself looking deeper into simple things to find bigger and better. Being curious is what keeps me coming back to learn more. If I wasn’t curious about what I was going to learn or what’s next I would get bored. Being a part of the military was a part of my dreams since my childhood, and my dreams came true when I became a midshipman in the Turkish Naval High School. I managed to be an international midshipman in the USNA when I prevailed among all of my classmates. I was successful, but inefficient and exhausted. In other words, I was putting effort in academics and leadership, and in everything more than normal. What I realized is that “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” (Karelitz). My mistake was not knowing myself, my surroundings, where I was, and my purpose exactly which led me into exhaustion, and demotivation.

It is believed that by obtaining a college degree, a student is able to increase their net worth through the experiences they have gained through college. Adults are internally motivated and self-directed. As adults mature, they move from being a dependant personality to increased self-directedness where they will resist learning when they feel others are imposing information, ideas or actions on them (Fidishun:2000).

They can be categorized according to a number of criteria which are based on cognitive and emotional components of personality. Their combination leads to the countless individual variants of real learning methods which – to a certain degree – can be influenced by the current e-learning resources. When the e-learning resources can react to the learners’ input characteristics or their learning results, they become adaptive e-learning systems (AES) or intelligent AES.
One contributing factor towards student success is student motivation. Motivation is reading unassigned books out of class that relate to the class subject matter, just to expand his or her knowledge. In the 21st century, education has become one of the important and essential requirements for everyone, notably youngsters. Since it is so important, everyone tend to question and evaluate if the education system currently is the best for all the learners. One of the most frequently asked question will be, ‘ Is rote learning good for learners?’ Rote learning is a memorising technique by repeating a specific material again and again until you eventually started to memorize, either consciously or unconsciously. It is same as we listen a song repeat and repeat again, we will eventually remembered and memorized the lyrics without paying any great afford at all. This method has been used globally since long time ago. By rote learning, learners can easily recall what they had memorize as fast as possible, word by word. However, is this what we want to achieve through education, to memorize and stuff all those facts into our brain?
The presentation of self reveals what I expect of people and what I think people might expect of me because of the impression I have made through my self-representation. I have chosen to present myself with this selfie to defy social norms and demonstrate my free spirits, through the portrayal of my positionality, body images, and facial expressions. I set myself free, free from the social limitations conveyed by gravity, from the stereotypes of my body type, and from society’s expectations of my happiness.
