In the late 1800s, Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck used different strategical plans in order to gain as much power possible, the majority of the plans consisted of him taking advantage of the different political parties. Bismarck used many traditional political strategies in order to gain the power he craved for, such as creating harsh laws and prohibiting certain beliefs or ideas. Unfortunately, these strategies did not satisfy the people, so Bismarck later started to increase the welfare of the working class, apologized to the Socialists, and did much more to obtain more political strength which eventually created a new conservatism. In an effort to increase political power for the Kaiser, Chancellor Otto Von Bismarck uses liberal and traditional
The focal point of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five is the devastating fire-bombing of Dresden in World War II, an event which was experienced by the real-life Vonnegut as well as the fictional Billy Pilgrim. Through the novel, Vonnegut renders his account of an occurrence which is, in itself, indescribable. In order to tell this story to the world, Vonnegut uses Billy Pilgrim's Tralfamadorian experience as a window that allows the reader some relief from the horrors of war. According to the author, the war was a traumatic experience which is virtually impossible to describe. As Vonnegut says in the introduction, " . . .I thought, too, that it [the novel] would be a masterpiece or at least make me a lot of money, since the subject was so big . . .but not many words about Dresden came from my mind then"(Vonnegut 2).
"In Slaughterhouse Five, -- Or the Children's Crusade, Vonnegut delivers a complete treatise on the World War II bombing of Dresden. The main character, Billy Pilgrim, is a very young infantry scout* who is captured in the Battle of the Bulge and quartered in a Dresden slaughterhouse where he and other prisoners are employed in the production of a vitamin supplement for pregnant women. During the February 13, 1945, firebombing by Allied aircraft, the prisoners take shelter in an underground meat locker. When they emerge, the city has been levelled and they are forced to dig corpses out of the rubble. The story of Billy Pilgrim is the story of Kurt Vonnegut who was captured and survived the firestorm in which 135,000 German civilians perished, more than the number of deaths in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined. Robert Scholes sums up the theme of Slaughterhouse Five in the New York Times Book Review, writing: 'Be kind. Don't hurt. Death is coming for all of us anyway, and it is better to be Lot's wife looking back through salty eyes than the Deity that destroyed those cities of the plain in order to save them.' The reviewer concludes that 'Slaughterhouse Five is an extraordinary success. It is a book we need to read, and to reread.' "The popularity of Slaughterhouse Five is due, in part, to its timeliness; it deals with many issues that were vital to the late sixties: war, ecology, overpopulation, and consumerism. Klinkowitz, writing in Literary Subversions.New American Fiction and the Practice of Criticism, sees larger reasons for the book's success: 'Kurt Vonnegut's fiction of the 1960s is the popular artifact which may be the fairest example of American cultural change. . . . Shunned as distastefully low-brow . . . and insufficiently commercial to suit the exploitative tastes of high-power publishers, Vonnegut's fiction limped along for years on the genuinely democratic basis of family magazine and pulp paperback circulation. Then in the late 1960s, as the culture as a whole exploded, Vonnegut was able to write and publish a novel, Slaughterhouse Five, which so perfectly caught America's transformative mood that its story and structure became best-selling metaphors for the new age. '"Writing in Critique, Wayne D. McGinnis comments that in Slaughterhouse Five, Vonnegut 'avoids framing his story in linear narration, choosing a circular structure.

Born May 21, 1471, in the city of Nuremberg (one of the strongest artistic and commercial centers in Europe during the 15th and 16th centuries), Albrecht Durer was an extremely gifted, versatile, influential, and artistically talented German artist of the Renaissance Period. Moreover, Durer was a gifted and skilled painter, draftsman, writer, printmaker, engraver, theorist, and mathematician from the city of Nuremberg. Additionally,Albrecht Durer apprenticed with his father, who was a goldsmith at the time, and also with the local painter Michael Wolgemut, whose workshop produced numerous woodcut illustrations for books and publications. As an admirer of his compatriot Martin Schongauer, Albrecht Dürer completely changed printmaking, and artistically elevated it to the level of an independent art form. Accordingly, Durer also expanded its tonal and dramatic range, and provided the imagery with a new and never before seen conceptual foundation.
Did you know that Henry I was the first monarch to use Windsor Castle as a home? During his reign, the wooden keep and walls were replaced with stone and served as a stronger structure for the castle to survive upon. Windsor Castle has housed many kings and queens throughout its lifetime, and has become a monument in England’s history. It has been refurbished over the years, but still has remained with the same layout. The interior is the extent of the changes made around the castle over its lifetime, besides the walls being substituted with stone.
Romanticism in Germany Romanticism was a European cultural revolt against authority, tradition, and Classical order (the Enlightenment); this movement permeated Western Civilization over a period that approximately dated from the late 18th to the mid-19th century. In general, Romanticism is that attitude or state of mind that focuses on the individual, the subjective, the irrational, the creative, and the emotional. These characteristics of Romanticism most often took form in subject matters such as history, national endeavor, and the sublime beauties of nature. According to historians, the mind-set of the Romantics was completely contradictory to the straightforwardness, impartiality, and serenity of 18th century Classicism.
In Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s play, The Visit, the decrepit town of Guellen is given the ultimate choice: They may lift themselves out of poverty through a gift from billionaire Claire Zachanassian, but in doing so, must abandon their morality and murder one of their own. As the leader of the town, the mayor has a particularly difficult struggle between morals and money. And, in the same way that the mayor represents the people in town government, the mayor’s struggle, too, reflects the struggle that the entire town experiences; a slow, painful slide into desire and decaying morality.
The definition of a Republic is a state in which the people and their elected representatives hold supreme power. For my final, I have chosen prompt number 5 with the composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven in mind. Beethoven’s dedication to music through his life has been massive, from his father encouraging him to Beethoven continuing to make music even after being permanently deaf.
The volksgemeinschaft or people’s community was the concept that the Nazis preached it was to be a new society, that was free from class division and social conflict. The act of protecting architecture involves maintaining the integrity of the place through restoring the buildings with both old and new materials. In Canada, historic objects can be granted special designation by the government at any of these three levels: the federal, the provincial, or the municipal. Historic preservation can include both short-term and long-term measures to protect, even stabilize the place or prevent from further damage occurring so there is no need for full construction and/or renovation. We have to ask ourselves what are the true questions on this topic of preserving and protecting. Should we be protecting everything and what is actually worth saving with preserving? Are they the beautiful buildings, the greater historical
