Learning Theories
Learning is a continuous process which starts from the day we are born . Every day of our life is enriched with a new learning which then becomes our guideline for the next many days to come. Learning is defined as the process by which an individual absorbs processes and interprets information. The brain, emotions , environment , cognition and experience- all play a key role in facilitating the learning process. Learning theories try to decipher the learning process by building a conceptual framework for the way individuals learn.

In came the brain and the human being power of cognition. This school believed that the human being was no programmed animal whose behaviour was just a response to stimuli. Rather the behaviour was a much though after action. Information that is received by an individual is processed, followed by cognition after which a favourable action is taken or behaviour adopted. The natural human learning process is a process developed by doctor Rita Smilkstein. Her wondrous studies incorporate tens of thousands of people, cohesively, over several years. Dr. Smilkstein’s intelligent process enumerates in six stages. Each consecutive stage builds upon the previous one. This class has given me a lot of insight about the way I want to go about teaching my classes. Not only has it given me ideas on stuff that I have never thought of but it also broke down and explained the ones that I already have seen. When I look at behaviorism now and connect it to all the things that I do in not only my classes of the past, but also my current classes, I see just how far the ideas and understanding of human learning has come. It was almost frustrating learning the history behind the idea of schooling and how it was geared not towards growth, creativity, community, and self-enhancement, but rather towards the agenda of pushing the people at the top farther ahead. To change that I can only do as much as I can to let children understand the different options that are available and hope that they also strive for something more.

Each of the three learning theories, Cognitivism, Constructivism, and Behaviorism, has worth and merit in my opinion. Yet, each one has its own unique qualities with one common factor, the learning process. It seems to me that the best teacher is one who would utilize all the theories of learning. However, if I look closely, I am most likely favoring one or two more than the others in my own instructional methods. Learning is commonly defined as the process of acquiring new, or modifying existing, knowledge through experiences. To me, learning is an ongoing process that continues throughout our lives. When referring to Robert E. Slavin ‘s book, Educational Psychology: Theory and Practice, he mentioned how people are already engaged in a learning environment where they receive stimuli everywhere they go, but they are only aware of some of the stimuli (p.129). By referring to Slavin’s book, what real learning is to me is when an individual actually notice those stimuli, learned particular information and skills from those stimuli, and being able to apply the things they learn to their daily life. Furthermore, when referring to the Operant Conditioning theory by B.F. Skinner, which is mentioned in Slavin’s book, real learning is also when an individual had a change in knowledge and behavior that is caused by experience or consequences, no matter if it is a positive or negative consequence.
