Introduction The following is a report on the procedure and method of conducting a group assignment. The purpose of this report is to give a firsthand experience on the goals achieved in producing a summary report within a group. The topic chosen by the group is entitled "Language and Meaning" (Appendix A). This report will examine how group is being structured, on communication barriers among group members and the use of technology tools to conduct group assignment. The information of this report is based on firsthand experience and theories being applied to support the arguments. Group Structure This assignment starts off with the forming of an informal group of five students selected from two tutorial groups namely Tony Stevens and David Chin. The students begin by introducing themselves and then briefly discuss on the topic handed out. This group possesses a common interest in writing a particular topic for the summary report. According to research, informal groups are formed spontaneously and voluntarily by people to meet a common interest (Archee, Gurney and Mohan 2013).The selection of this group was done under the characteristic of an identical and agreed goal being achieved. As pointed out (Lumsden & Lumsden 2004) a group formed when the following characteristics are present - an agreed and an identical goal, responsibility and shared leadership with the mutual support between members. Communication Pattern When the group was first formed, not every member of the team were collaborating and certain conflict were raised. The other issue was members being left out from the discussion if not present in Skype during the conversation. Therefore, members agree to switch to another alternative electronic tools which is Dropbox. The context of Dropbox is very similar to any other electronic mail such as Gmail or Yahoo mail. Whereas Dropbox have larger storage to store large size file of documents. Whenever a document has been received, there is a 'bing' sound to notified the receiver a file has been received and unread. This Dropbox application can be install either in laptop or mobile phone which is convenient for member to receive the file through mobile phone even when not attended in front of a computer or laptop.
My analysis is on the film The Goonies. While I view the movie and determine the various norms, behaviors, roles and interaction between group members, as well as individuals the examination within the realm of film can present many of the same components. Thus, our group selected this movie to analyze based on its formation of a cohesive problem-solving group full of unforgettable characters. Our first task was writing group contract which involved participation of all group members and required closer contact among students. Tuckman’s Group Development Stages model can be used to show how our group worked together, as our ‘4U’ team had gone through each stage. Example of the forming stage was the first meeting when all group members tried to be polite and asked questions, such as ‘what is major?’, ‘what is your GPA?’, we tried to be kind to each other and be cautious to avoid misunderstandings in the beginning of our work. However, everything changed when we received the task to write contract and our group entered second stage of the Tuckman’s model. We experimented and tried to analyze who is doing better at brainstorming, writing, proofreading, and managing tasks. Therefore, some secondary tension occurred as all group members argued about topic, goals and norms we should establish. Our group consisted of four members which made it difficult to pass to third stage of Tuckman’s model. There was a conflict about topic; we had two ideas involving water quality problem and meal-plan issue. Both topics were interesting and challenging, there was an equal distribution of voices among these topics and group members openly disagreed, competed for a status and tried to persuade that their ideas are more important. There was not norming stage as separate, as conflicts occurred all the time, statuses of group members were also constantly changing. When engaging in others in a team, communication is a double sided coin. On one side of the coin working with others in a group can be engaging, fun, exciting, and a little easier when it comes to the work load individually. Then when you turn the coin over it can be the complete opposite. Dealing with others in a group/ could be a nightmare, nightmarish in the way of, team members not doing the individually assessments, not communicating having negative attitudes, competitiveness, just being a slacker overall. Working in groups can be a very positive or very negative experience. How a group functions together determines how positive or negative that experience becomes. All go through four stages of development, forming, norming, storming, and performing.. Unfortunately for our group, many of the members experienced some of these stages together and other missed out on that opportunity of original growth. Kirst-Ashman and Hull describe these stages as a pattern of development. This allows the group members to see how they are working together but also allows observers to see what stage the group is stuck on. I had hoped for my group to develop past the first stage of development quickly, however as a whole we couldn’t seem to get over this limbo of being a forming or norming group. Our group was not the best functioning, but working together taught me the important pieces of being a group member as well as working within a group.

Groups influence our everyday lives in ways that we don’t even realize. Most of what is learned from groups are societal norms that are being reinforced on a micro level in everyday life. Group influence on individuals is a clear tangible proof of societal norms by institutions. The groups we become a part of therefore can have a greater influence on our individual actions then we are aware of.
