I would like to elaborate further on my experience with the Mock Trial team. Mock Trial is an activity that focuses around a case created by the Minnesota Bar Association. Teams practice arguing the case by merit, and it promotes skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and working with a team. I have been on my high school’s Mock Trial team since I was a freshman, and I believe it has greatly improved my abilities in all three aforementioned areas. The competitions for Mock Trial are held in actual courtrooms in front of actual judges. It is the responsibility of each team to create and defend their argument, which requires great critical thinking skills. Throughout my time on the team my ability to create persuasive arguments in a clear and concise way and defend them with fact has drastically improved. This skill has assisted me outside of my life in Mock Trial in many ways, from Thanksgiving political debates at the dinner table to writing this very essay. Finally and most importantly, Mock Trial has improved my ability to work in a team. Because of the way Mock Trial is structured, there is no one who can win by his or herself. The performance of the team as a whole is dependent on each and every individual, and therefore it is critical that the performance of each member is coordinated with everyone else’s. This interconnectedness essentially forced me to take the high standards of excellence that I held for my own performance and apply them to others. It has also cultivated great love and family atmosphere amongst my team that is fueled by our desire to see each other perform to the best of our abilities, because we all succeed with and because of each
Ever since the start of using courts, the main goal of it was to deliver a fair environment where the accused could defend themselves and show the jurors that he/ she did not commit the crime that they were accused of. Sometimes this system fails us and they sentence an innocent man to jail for something they didn’t commit. The activity that I observed in the field of criminal justice was I went to the boulder court house and watched one of the cases that’s was happening that day. As I sat there watching I saw the defendant’s lawyer trying to convince the jurors that his client was innocent, I thought to myself: how can we improve the court room. Sometimes we see some cases where the criminal can be let go because of not a lot of evidence like Casey Anthony. We also might see that the case might be unfair to person being convicted of a crime that they didn’t do. An example of this is the jurors have some past experience with a person of that race and they don’t like them or they already come with a decision before they even hear the evidence found. Pretrial diversion process is when defendants charged with non-serious offenses are diverted in lieu of prosecution, if they agree to complete certain requirements such as community services, enrollment in rehabilitation program, conditional supervision. The process give first time offenders a second chance at having a clean criminal record. The prosecutor’s office serve as a gateway as to which defendants are eligible for pretrial diversion process. Defendants are evaluate on certain factors to determine if the likelihood of future criminal behavior or noncompliance.
Competency to stand Trial: Refers to the ability or inability of a person to stand trial, and the inability could be due to an issue preventing them from being able to participate in their defense. If a person is considered incompetent, it could be for many reasons, for instance a mental or physical disorder as well as an intellectual disability.

The Scopes Trial is one that boiled down to forcing the judge, and all the people impacted, to choose between taking a side on an important matter: faith or science. Because the trial occurred in a little rural town in Tennessee, the majority of the jury, and the judge himself, were of the Christian faith, or at least were raised in that atmosphere. The trial was one that did not debate so much whether God existed and created the world, but whether the Word of God should be taken literally or not. This debate had one side viewing the other as basically heathens, and the second side viewed the first as foolish and ignorant hillbillies.
Although most people on the team are friends, disagreements are bound to arise and have to be worked through in order to make a show. Each person is an individual and will have different ideas and perspectives and it is an important life skill to learn to respect other people’s thoughts. As a member of the guard one will need to learn to take criticism. It is hard to listen to what other people say is being done wrong, especially when one has worked hard on something. Our current trial by jury system was originally adopted from Anglo-Saxon English common law. Prior to juries, the United States had much more rudimentary methods that were in affect, such as bench trials. A bench trial consists of solely the judge determining the final verdict, versus a jury possessing that responsibility. Proceeding with a trial by jury assures that there will be a margin of error, simply due to the fact that the jurors are human, and are susceptible to human fallibility. Whether the jury is cognizant of it or not, emotions such as pre-determined bias and favoritism can impede or bring the case to a halt all together. According to Andy Leipold, a professor emeritus at the University of Illinois College of Law, the number of jury trial conviction rates have increased from 75 percent in 1946 to 84 percent from 1989 to 2002 (Krause). This sudden anomaly can be attributed to the influx of uneducated jurors, the increased cost of proceeding to trial, and improper juror selection.
Our team did really well with making sure everyone’s ideas were heard, but conversations with another team, who did not successfully complete the simulation, was because one or two people took the lead, and other group members were hesitant to speak up. Compared to other teams, our team managed group thinks effectively. One other team saved more money than us when they completed the challenge, which confirms the assumption we should not have made in trying to implement as many tasks as we did. Every team had challenges with time constraint which was due to a number of factors such as: brand new teams, unclear instructions, and a drop in team morale when the system gave negative feedback at a wrong task. When twelve people sit and watch the same trial with the same information the way different people perceive it makes a difference of opinions which is back by past experiences. The discussion that is taken place after the trail is taken very seriously and the opinions from a variety of people that makes up the jury makes for many different perspectives. This causes the jury to annalyse the case and all the points that were raised these discussions last for hours until in most cases a unanimous decious has occurred on the verdict
The competencies of the team is about the team ability to respond and solve problems, ability to communicate, solve problem or manage conflicts, and ability to make decisions. It is important for the team to create an environment that allows its members to articulate their goals. It is important that team members ensure and understand how their work contributes towards team goals. Also team member should make effective necessary decisions; communicate with other team members; give and receive necessary feedback; form trust; and resolve conflicts or disagreements.
Skills and knowledge possessed by every member is also important for a team to become high performance. Although it is among the most important factors, however, it must be coupled with a good working relationship with every team member and good collaboration with every team member. The members who possess the good skills and wide knowledge will be a useful resource to the team if that team member can share their strengths with the other team members and vice versa. It is usually misconstrued that having skillful and intelligent team members is already enough to make a team work right. This kind of thinking is the reason why most teams, despite all of those competent members they have, fail to achieve their goals. A team should establish one common goal, not to think that way and develop a good working relationship with each member. For my field experience, I chose to attend a court case. On October 14th, 2015 I went to the District of Columbia court and watched a sentencing. It was not at all what I initially expected although after sitting in class for several weeks I was not shocked by it. What surprised me most was the informal, personal nature that the whole process had. The experience was interesting and I feel that I learned a lot from it.

Working in teams provides an opportunity for individuals to come together and establish a rapport towards others within a group. Teamwork is classified as people with different strengths and skills who work together to achieve a common goal. When a team works well, specific objectives are fulfilled and satisfied. Teamwork plays a crucial role in implementing and fulfilling a common goal in a team project. Each member plays a role and takes on different responsibilities combined together. In different stages of teamwork, conflicts and arguments may occur for as members have different standpoints which need to be harmonized within the team. The key to having an effective teamwork is to explore each member's unique abilities to motivate them.
