The smell of the sterilization processes that were happening wafted through the air. The cries of the children in need of medical attention still ring in my ears to this day. All of this enticed me from the first moment I experienced it. Whether it was vigorously flipping through pages in a textbook or captured by a broadcasting of reality medical television shows, my mind has always been enticed by health care. After completing high school, I have some grand ideas planned for my schooling and future career. As I have gone through my schooling at MOC-Floyd Valley High School, I have come to the realization that I want to pursue a career in the medical field. With the hustle and bustle in an emergency room, or the child with a cold, I want to be there to assist in any situation. This is along the lines of natural sciences that this scholarship outlines. To be in specific, I plan to major in nursing, and possibly have minor in psychology. I have always had an interest in human anatomy and physiology for as long as I can remember. I have been able to maintain my 4.0 GPA through my four years of high school. Sitting on my couch cuddled up with a textbook is a nightly occurrence. Our school allows students to obtain academic pins each year during the spring, and for the past three years, I have been able to acquire and have a firm grasp on this pin. When I graduated high school, I really gave a lot of thought about what I wanted to do with my future and who I wanted to be. During this time, I read that psychologist often suggest people revisit the activities they enjoyed as a child. They claim that children spend their time participating in activities that bring them the greatest delight. Children do not think about salaries and retirement plans, they simply do what makes them happiest. This made me think back to how I spent my childhood and what I did in those years solely for the sake of it bringing me joy. That is when I realized that care giving and nurturing has been a part of my happiness since I was a child. Whenever a family member or friend was injured or ill, I would be the first in line to administer a Band-Aid or bring them soup in bed. When I was blessed enough to have everyone in my life be in good health, I would find an outlet for care giving in my stuffed animals. I would come up with fictional illness and ailments and find a way to care for them; whether it was constructing a tourniquet out of my hair ribbons, a cast out of duct tape or an oxygen mask out of sand which bags. When I allowed my imagination to run wild, I always found my greatest joy in nurturing. As I grew older I gave up my imaginary patients, but I never lost the happiness I felt when caring for another person.

Once upon a time, my best friend, Bryan Martinez, often heard his mother’s medical conversations with friends. One day at school, our teacher confronted Mrs. Martinez and told her that she was able tell that Bryan was a son from a nurse. Apparently there was an incident at school where a little boy was acting out and Bryan told our teacher that the little boy was agitated, and to give him some medication to calm him down. As demonstrated by Bryan, nursing is ongoing profession that promotes the health and well-being of individuals.
Licensed practical nurses (LPN 's) fill an important role in modern health care practices. Their primary job duty is to provide routine care, observe patients’ health, assist doctors and registered nurses, and communicate instructions to patients regarding medication, home-based care, and preventative lifestyle changes (Hill). Ever since I was younger, I wanted to get into the medical field. Both my grandmothers used to work in the hospital and I would always wanted to tag along. Following them to work influenced my decision to work in a hospital. Every time I tag along, I would see many interesting things that would catch my attention and make me curious. There was a lot of materials such as the stethoscope, weighing machine, and etcetera that I would pretend to be a doctor or nurse examining imaginary people. It was absolutely perfect because I always wanted to help people. So this fall of 2014, I will be starting my education on becoming a nurse anesthetist.
Screech!!! The bus’ brakes scream upon stopping. I look up to see buildings that look like stone and marbled statuses. The buildings stood tall with tan shiny finishes. The grass was too green to be true and the atmosphere felt like home to me. I had embarked upon a journey that I never thought would be. I was here, here at Emory School of Medicine. Numerous of people walking around with white doctor coats, teal scrubs, and soft colorful crocs. I was a part of an elite group of about thirty high school students, who would soon be a part of Emory’s School of Medicine mentoring program, called Emory School of Medicine Pipeline Program. This program introduced intercity students, such as myself, to the world of medicine. This inspired students to become future medical doctors, nurses, and other medical professions. This program greatly influenced my interest for medicine.
Nursing is a collaborative job that encompasses promoting health and well-being, preventing illness and treating the ill and dying. The nursing profession is not for everyone; it takes strong-willed individuals that understand the significance of putting other people’s lives in their hands. Born in a developing African country where the health care delivery system is generally less than ideal, I have had a first-hand experience of the healthcare disparities that often characterize underserved communities. There is a remarkable irony that comes to light in most underserved communities, and that is that most major causes of diseases are either preventable or treatable with basic health care delivery. I find the most pressing problem of such communities is that of public enlightenment.

The following essay is a reflective paper on an event that I encountered as a student nurse during my first clinical placement in my first year of study. The event took place in a long term facility. To improve my understanding of maintaining my capability for practice as a RN, I set a goal to learn in depth from my classes, related units, and through interacting with my friends and tutors. There were many setbacks on the way, but as I became more acquainted with the matter I began understanding better. In this reflection I’ll use Gibbs reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) to address my experiences as a student nurse in fulfilling the maintenance and capability for practice. I am working as a staff nurse at one of the Integrated Management System (IMS) accredited hospital in Sarawak since 2014. I qualified as a Registered Nurse with a Diploma in Nursing in year 2007. My first year I have been working in a multi-disciplinary ward. We cover a range of specialties including minor and major surgeries. The health care team in my ward consists of 1 Unit Manager, 20 staff nurses and 15 care assistants.
