“A daily school meal provides a strong incentive to send children to school and keep them there,” ( World Food Programme). Where do most schools get their food from and why? We are facing problems with our school lunches because not everyone is receiving the nutrition they need and in some countries a school meal is the only nutritious meal they eat.
Where are schools around the world getting there food from? Kids around the world are not gaining the nutrition they need. “In some countries, school meals are often the only regular and nutritious
meal a child receives,” (World Food Programme). This all depends on who or what or where these schools buy their food from. “School meals help families to educate their children and protect their food security in times of crisis,” (World Food Programme). Schools providing a good meal a day could make kids want to stay in school and want to learn because that may be the only meal they eat. If students do not a good meal it could cause them to want to go home or not want to learn because they are hungry.

companies does our local school use to supply us food? Are kids in our school receiving enough fresh food? “We use a lot of different items to keep this food sanitary and fresh,” (Howard). This determines the safety of our food. They don’t want our food on the ground and they want our food staying at the right temperature and only being out for 3 hours then getting thrown away. All food that needs refrigeration is earning refrigeration and everything is being touched with gloves and the workers wear hair nets. “To get food for the highschool and middle school it all costs $4,000 a week,” (Howard). This is the cost a week to be able to provide kids in the high school and middle school a meal for the day. The local school buys food from only these places. “We get most of the food from Gordon Food Service and we get bread from Aunt Millie’s Bread and we get fresh fruit from Paizo Produce,” (Howard). We are still facing problems with school lunches.
We have the problems locally and nationally with our school lunches. Kids locally and nationally are not grasping the nutrition/ fresh food that they need in school lunches. Locally and nationally this is all depending on where schools buy their food from. Also, locally and nationally they have a difference locally the problem is that school lunches do not have enough fresh food they only have fresh fruit. Nationally school are not being able to give the kids a nutritious meal or the school meal being the only nutritious meal they eat or the only meal they eat in general. The central idea is that locally and nationally we have a problem in our school lunches, and these problems are both caused by the same reason the places the school’s choose to buy the food from. We need to try and find a better way to supply the food. A way that’s nutritious and fresh and
healthy.
Schools are meant to give our children a healthy and nurturing environment, and yet so much of the lunches in schools are fattening; does this stop schools from achieving the aforementioned goal? Childhood obesity in the United Sates continues to be a growing problem despite so any new programs to help combat it, and new research is showing how schools may be playing a large role in childhood obesity. School lunches are showing to be the problem, they encourage poor nutrition in our nation’s students, and simple reform is proving to not be enough to stop the rise in obesity rates.
I don't think our school lunch is healthy because it has fat and too much sodium. Although it is good it is fattening it is the reason for much of the obesity in the U.S. Many kids have no other option to eat the unhealthy school lunches or they will be hungry.

In other words, the food is not delicious and there are not many choices. Also, when children don’t get proper nutrition, they have trouble focusing on school. Most students do not buy lunch because they feel it is unappealing and do not like the food served. Many students go to other kids and ask for food. In addition, many students do not eat breakfast, so they rely on lunch to fuel them for the day.
One problem among school lunches is how all the unhealthy foods build up over time and cause obesity. According to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, most schools in America that don't regulate their lunches calorie intake
“More than 76 percent of schools sell soft drinks and sweetened fruit drinks, but fewer than half offered bottles water. Fewer than 15 percent sell low-fat or nonfat yogurt, and fewer than one third order skim milk. Only 25 percent of schools say they've reduced fats and oils in recipes.”(Spake, 2). Choices at lunch range from greasy to unidentifiable. Most students eat school lunches five days a week. So most of the food they eat throughout the week comes from the school cafeteria. Although, the schools do tend to offer healthy choices such as salads, subs, skim milk, and unlimited fruits and vegetables. “Each week Phoenix students are served a variety of fruits and vegetables from guava to grapes and jicima to red peppers. School officials hope that by exposing children to fruits and vegetable they may develop a taste for them and request their parents to buy them.”(Bailey, 1). Real meat is becoming an issue in schools. “According to reports issued by the Physicians Committee for responsible Medicine (PCRM) the USDA dumps hundreds of millions of pounds of surplus beef, chicken, cheese, and pork on the National School lunch Program.”(Lord, 42). Chicken isn't whole white meat; some of it doesn't even taste like meat! Let’s move on to unhealthy foods. There are unlimited amounts of un...
We cannot have a school lunch reform where the needs of all students are not met. If only some, or less than the majority, of students are receiving the nutritional values they need, we need to adapt the reform to further achieve better standards for school lunch programs. For example, after a student finishes their meal, schools could offer a second serving of protein to their students. In effect, this will add a higher amount of calories to the students’ daily diets.
The shocking truth about our school lunches is that they are not health for young kids. The meat most schools use K.F.C and Campbell soup refuse to buy such meat. This shows that school lunch is not very health for kids if fast food won’t even use it. Schools are also
In most cases, when we think of the term, “ hungry children”, we think of third-world countries; We don’t think about the millions of children suffering in the prosperous nation of America. Anna Quindlen identifies the problem, that in America, a small but significant minority of children are starving; and she’s questioning whether to have year-round school to help feed them. Anna provides sufficient and effective evidence to help support her claim: She announced that school helps low-income families get their child at least one quality meal.
Lunch is one of the most important meals of the day and is consumed mostly in school cafeterias for children and adolescence. Wholesome lunches are vital in maintaining a healthy metabolism and give children energy for the rest of the school day. Children are advised to eat healthily but do not always do so because the choices of tastier, fatty foods offered in school cafeterias. The National School Lunch Program, NSLP, which is a federally assisted meal program operating in public and nonprofit private schools set nutritious guidelines for lunches served in school cafeterias (USDA). However, school campuses still offer foods high in fat as well as selling candy, chips, and soda in their vending machines, as well as their school shops. In order
Thirty one million kids nationwide eat school sponsored meals twice a day for a hundred eighty days and on average for twelve years. In this sense school lunches are an important and critical component of childhood nutrition and development. Yet these meals are highly processed and filled with chemicals and preservatives. School lunch rooms are essentially fast food restaurants; they unload shipments of frozen food then heat it up in glorified microwaves and serve it hot and ready. This is the same basic principle of fast food restaurants and people all know how terribly unhealthy fast food is for them. Still America feeds this toxic material to kids every day. This has been a tremendous issue for years but it is more devastating now than ever before.
School lunch is an obvious problem that has yet to be fixed. Mark Samuelsson once said, “We struggle with eating healthily, obesity, and access to good nutrition for everyone. But we have a great opportunity to get on the right side of this battle by beginning to think differently about the way that we eat and the way that we approach food.” A well know fact to almost all students and their parents is that there are many problems with school lunches and it needs to change. Not only is school lunch unhealthy, but it also does not taste good most of the time. Some people feel that school lunch is not that big of a deal so it should be very cheaply processed in factories and preserved, but that is not the case. In order to solve the lingering
It seems that school food has more things in it than we think, some of it is good, some is bad. Haven’t you ever wondered what’s in your own school food? What is mystery meat? What is being done to make school food better?
With the implementation of the “Healthy Kids Hunger-Free Act” schools are not serving as many lunches and participation is decreasing. According to the Government Accountability Office (GOA), “Nationwide, student participation declined by 1.2 million students(or 3.7 percent) from school year 2010-2011 through school year 2012-2013, after having increased steadily for many years”(sec. 1). The school lunches became more distasteful and bland; the combinations of foods did not make sense, and the portion sizes decreased significantly. In order to support the cafeteria
Many of these children only get a full meal while having their school lunch, so many of these children go hungry the rest of the day.
