Every organ in the human body is composed of one or more tissues. The study of these tissues is known as histology. It is because of histology that the structure of organs can be researched and understood. Since organs are composed of tissues, it is important to understand each tissue type, their structure, their location, and their functions to better understand how each organ operates within the human body.
Tissues are composed of groups of cells that have similar shapes and functions. There are four main types of tissue found in the human body: epithelial tissue, connective tissue, muscular tissue, and nervous tissue. Each tissue has unique characteristics that differentiate them from one another. Epithelial tissue covers the surface of the body, connective tissue adds support and structure to the body, muscular tissue contracts to allow movement, and nervous tissue controls the organs (Hoehn & Marieb, 2007, p. 118).
Epithelial tissue covers the surface of the human body and lines most internal cavities. Epithelial tissue is found in the body’s skin, lining of the stomach and intestines, the kidney, and glands, as well as other locations within the body (Amsel, 2012). The two types of epithelial tissue are (1) covering and lining epithelium and (2) glandular epithelium. The covering and lining epithelium are found lining the integumentary, digestive, cardiovascular, and respiratory systems as well as the ventral body cavity and the organs this cavity houses (Hoehn, et al., 2007, p. 118). The glandular epithelium is found within the glands of the entire human body. In Labs 22 through 26, my lab partner and I were assigned a fetal pig to perform a dissection on in order to understand anatomy, the study of an organism’s structure1, and physiology, the study of the functions and activities of a living organism2. Throughout these labs, we studied the structure of the fetal pig and performed experiments to understand four system processes: digestion, cardiovascular, respiratory, and excretory. Dissecting an organism, physically moving and seeing the different portions of the organism, especially of a fetal pig, is very important. This helps in the understanding of the skeletal structure and what series of physical and chemical processes the mammalian species body performs in order to survive.
It is much thicker than the epidermis and contains collagen, reticular and elastic fibers, and is vascular. The area where the dermis meets the epidermis is unique in that the epidermis contains ridges at the stratum basale layer which interlocks with the dermal papillae, which are upward projections, like waves, on the uppermost surface of the dermis. The dermis had two sublayers. The papillary layer is in the dermal papillae and near it and is made up of areolar tissue. The four tissue layers are the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and the serosa. The mucosa is the inner most layer which also composes of its own; the epithelial, lamina propia, and muscularis mucosa. The mucosa secretes hormones, digestive enzymes and also mucus as well. The submucosa is composed of areolar connective tissue, which contains a rich blood supply, nerve fibers and lymphatic vessels and follicles. The muscularis external is the layer that is responsible for the function of segmentation and peristalsis. It contains an inner circular layer and also an outer longitudinal layer both of smooth muscle cells. The serosa is the layer that is the outermost. It is also called the visceral peritoneum and it is areolar connective tissue that is covered with mesothelium.
