In Chapter 6 we learn about the Integumentary System. The discussion on the integumentary system will include the skin and subcutaneous tissues, hair, nails, and cutaneous glands and disorders of the skin.
Skin is the organ that covers our internal organs and tissues. It provides for the sense of touch, helps to protect us from invading bacteria and infections, aids in regulating our internal body temperature and water balance and, with the help of the sun, provides us with Vitamin D, which is essential in the development of bones. It is the largest organ of the human body. It has two types, the thick skin found on the palms of the hands and the bottoms of the feet, and thin skin which covers the rest of the body.
The skin is made up of layers called epidermis, dermis and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and consists mainly of dead cells and a protein called keratin. The epidermis is avascular, meaning there are no blood vessels in this layer. It contains a few nerve receptors for touch and pain. The cells found in the epidermis are stem cells, which become the next cell described, keratinocytes. These cells manufacture the protein keratin and are the most abundant cells in the epidermis. The second layer of the skin is called the dermis and is also known as the middle layer. The dermis is what holds the body together. The dermis has layers to it as well as the epidermis. Hair is considered one of the components of the integumentary system, along with the skin, nails, glands and nerves. Mammalian hair has many functions including protection from environmental factors and the ability to disperse sweat gland products such as pheromones. Almost every part of the human body is covered by hair except for the palms, hands and bottoms of the feet. On average, every person has about five million hairs; each of these hairs is born from a follicle or tiny tube-like structure that grows into the dermis layer of the skin. My favorite type of cell is the Merkel cell, also known as the “touch cell”. Merkel cells are found in the outer layer of the skin, or the epidermis. Named after Friedrich Merkel, the German anatomist discovered these cells in the late nineteenth century while studying rats, which have large quantities of Merkel cells in their paws (“What is a Merkel Cell?”). Not much is known for certain about these cells to this day, but one thing is for sure: they function as touch receptors by signaling sensations such as pressure to the brain. While Merkel cells are distributed throughout the entire human body, they are more numerous in places where the sensation of touch is more prominent, like the fingers and face (“What is a Merkel Cell?”).
The four tissue layers are the mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and the serosa. The mucosa is the inner most layer which also composes of its own; the epithelial, lamina propia, and muscularis mucosa. The mucosa secretes hormones, digestive enzymes and also mucus as well. The submucosa is composed of areolar connective tissue, which contains a rich blood supply, nerve fibers and lymphatic vessels and follicles. The muscularis external is the layer that is responsible for the function of segmentation and peristalsis. It contains an inner circular layer and also an outer longitudinal layer both of smooth muscle cells. The serosa is the layer that is the outermost. It is also called the visceral peritoneum and it is areolar connective tissue that is covered with mesothelium.
Melanin is the product of cells located within the skin called melanocytes.The function of melanocytes is to manufacture the pigments eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin, which is more photostable than phaeomelanin, is the main product of the melanocytes. In melanin, various chemicals, under the influence of enzymes, build a very stable compound that is distributed throughout the body of pigmented peoples. In an experiment by Wasterstrom, 1984, melanin exposed to up to 600 degrees C was shown to retain close to 50% of its original properties. In addition, melanin has been found in 1,000-year-old mummies and in extinct mammoth skins, according to Daniels et al., 1972.
The musculoskeletal system is comprised of bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, ligaments, fascia and muscles. Together these body parts work to establish a framework that is the musculoskeletal system. This framework is what gives the body its shape, form, and figure. It stabilizes the body as well as supplies the structural support. The musculoskeletal body features not only provide a framework for your body but allows your ability to create movement. These movements are monitored by the musculoskeletal components which then determine your degree of flexibility. Skin cancer is a disease where cancer (malignant) cells are found on the outer layer of the skin (epidermis). The three types of cells found in the epidermis are squamous cells, basal cells, and melanocytes. These cells in time grow to be cancerous. Thus, the three types of skin cancers are squamous cell, basal cell, and melanoma. Melanoma is the most deadliest and destructive type of cancer. (“Skin Cancer” infotrac.com) The number of people with melanoma has risen in Scotland from 3.5 in 1979 to 10.6 per 100,000 in 1998 for men and 7.0 to 13.1 for women. (Miller 945) Squamous cell and Basal cell skin cancer can kill up to 2,200 people a year in the United States. (Sommerfield SIRS.com) Basal cell, being the most common type of skin cancer, is the cancer that about 75 percent of the people have.
