Carpooling is an environment friendly option in transportation field
The number of vehicles on the roads has increased over the past decades and it causes traffic and pollution. All the members of the family own a vehicle, so even when they travel in the same direction they commute by their own vehicle rather than using a single vehicle. Thus it results in a lot of vehicle passing on the road causing congestion and difficulty for the path walkers to walk on the streets.
The use of public transits, trains and buses has become less because of the increase in the number of users using their own vehicle for transportation. The more number of vehicles on the road increases the traffic and pollution causing and consumption of more fuel that causes

Some organizations and companies conduct awareness campaigns to promote the importance of the carpooling and educate about the social and environmental benefits of carpooling.
In some countries, the government and the transportation department have constructed a designated lane of called the HOV (High occupancy vehicle) lane. The high occupancy vehicle is the vehicle in which there are two or more riders present in the drive and these lanes create a strong incentive for the carpooling. There are separate parking spaces allocated in some countries for the carpooling so as to attract the public to participate in promoting a better environment.
When carpooling is encouraged in some countries, there still countries which are against it because of the tax crimes that takes place in the country.
The advantage about the carpooling is that it reduces the travel expense spent by an individual. The riders sharing their ride divide the amount spent for the travel and fuel between themselves, however the driver does not earn extra amount from hailing the carpooling vehicle. But when the amortization is calculated for the purchase and maintenance, tax and insurance of the vehicle, it costs about one dollar per

The Taxicab industry plays a vital and large role in the U.S. urban transportation system, employing 233,000 drivers (United States Bureau of Labor Statistics) and providing transportation to millions of Americans each day. Taxicabs differ most substantially from alternative urban transportation systems, like busses and subways, as customers select the final destination, opposed to adhering to a predefined route. This flexibility is reflected in the higher price of taxicabs (Moore and Balaker) compared to other public transit services. Substitutes for taxicabs include busses, subways, trains, limousines, private drivers, car ownership and rental cars, among others (Brennan).
Another benefit is provided by the company is emergency ride home programs. Emergency ride home (ERH) programs provide commuters who regularly carpool, vanpool, bike, walk, or transit to work with a reliable ride home when unexpected emergency arises. ERH programs are designed to rescue commuters who are worried about how they will get home in the event of an emergency. ERH programs may be established by individual employers. Usually the employer will pay for a taxi or rental car home in the case that an employee who is carpool passenger has to leave in the middle of the day or the carpool driver is for some reason unavailable. ERH tends to be a low-cost way to encourage carpool use, especially if a company only fills in coverage for areas
To: All employees From: Reem Gorgis, chairperson Date: 10/18/2014 Re: carpool When you drive to work, are you alone or do you have room for other passengers? Have you ever noticed how many others around you are driving on their own too? In the USA, single occupant comminuting is around 75% according to census data. There are millions of us who engage in solitary travel to and from work; driving billions of miles each year, spending a stack of cash on gas and pumping tones of emissions into the atmosphere. If public transport isn’t for you and you’ve rejected the idea of carpooling in the past for whatever reasons, technology has provided more far more choice, flexibility and efficiency to the concept.
(Alenuskin & Schotter, 2014) Car2go as a complementary option in the urban mobility landscapes, is an efficient individual transportation for one to two person in and around metropolitan areas. Pollution is a major problem for all of us. People need to recognize this situation so we can start making a difference to this problem. In order to start making a difference, the federal government should increase gasoline tax by one dollar a gallon. Fifty percent of this dollar will go towards public transportation, since passenger cars and trucks are a major contribution towards air pollution, according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, E.P.A (10/4, http://www.epa.gov/autoemissions/emsns.html). Due to the expected increase after this is put forth, the remaining fifty percent of the dollar will go towards safety on these transits. When public transportation increases, air pollution will decrease, which will lessen the harmful health risks towards the environment.
To help address the concern with additional traffic on the roads light-rail trains are becoming more popular. This means cars and trains may share lanes during travel. When this is the case it is very important that drivers are very aware of their surroundings. They must look behind them before entering a shared lane. If the light is flashing, do not enter that lane until it is clear.

Other schools have implemented rules and techniques in order to make parking easier and limit the amount of citations given to students for parking. Solutions such as car-pooling and limiting the issue of parking permits solves this problem for universities across the nation. For example, Cornell implements a system that encourages students to carpool. In this system students that carpool have the opportunity to park closer to popular sections on campus. Also, parking for these carpooling cars may be less expensive and these students may even be given a rebate for agreeing to carpool.
For example, rail modes of transportation may be used to transport large amounts of freight long distance if the railheads are available at both origin and destination. This eliminated the use of semi-truck that create the same amount of emission as one train. One trains can move over 100 containers, while one semi-truck maybe only can move two or three at the most. The environmental effected mode in this situation is train of course. One of most environmental impacted modes of intermodal transportation is over the road truck. The industry aims to reducing emission from the surface mode of truck by increasing the use of alternative fuels and use of less pollutions modes such as carpooling and route sharing. Today’s consumers is having a hard time avoiding products manufactured and transported overseas, as economic globalization moves more goods from factories to major markets throughout the world (Corbett, Winebrake J. 2007). The push by the consumer for goods coming from location has a great effect on emission and global warming. The consumer may not even understand the impact they personally have on the world
Today, people use their own personal vehicles to travel more than ever before. Personal transportation is no longer considered a luxury; it is now considered a necessity. The number of cars in the United States has been growing steadily since the 1970s. The number of miles traveled by cars has risen nearly 150 percent, yet the United States population has only grown roughly 40 percent during that time (hybridcars.com, Driving Trends). Although it may seem like we are advancing into the future, in reality, we are moving backwards from the effects these vehicles have on our bodies and the environment. The pollution produced by these vehicles has brought us to the day where we must find other modes of transportation that cause less harm to the world in which we live. Advances in technology have developed hybrid vehicles to try and slow down the amount of pollution. Driving a hybrid vehicle, instead of a conventional gas powered vehicle, can reduce the amount of pollution that affects our lives and the environment around us.
