Mind set for English 1301 As an incoming freshman in an enrolled in a writing course, but still in high school, I believe there are many aspects for me to learn from this course. Learning to become a better writer, achieving higher quality, and improvement of a great flow is what I want to achieve from this class in my future writing career. Being a high school student, I acknowledge that I am filled with more weaknesses rather than strength, but the knowledge that I had been educated for this class is pretty impressive as well. In addition the classes previous to this class set me up to a better fundamental to succeeded in this class and were emphasized the power of writing in my future career as well. The classes that I had taken were worthy and brilliant but my flow to make the essay smooth and natural was hard to achieve, my essays sounded inconsistent and odd. To add on, my transitions of the story was awkward and misplaced, but in my thought it was great. In addition, to fix my weakness I edited and read it out loud multiple times, but my goal was not achievable within the time I had with my instructors. Moving on, from this class I am expected to learn a great amount of skills for grammar and techniques for a better writer. The new and emphasized rules to a better author; from this class I want to a walkout with a fundamental of how to improve the quality of my essay. Furthermore, knowledge that I will preserve to reflect and transfer into essays of my own profession in many fields of occupation. Not to mention, I want my writing to not only appease my satisfaction, but also be acknowledged by other individuals of my work. Moreover, during the period of my writing journey, one of the most positive I had been writing a summary for a book with my own interpretation. Another thing that I learned from taking this course is how to build a better writing and reading skills. Acknowledging reading and writing skills will help me to succeed in my other university courses.
In fact, I began this semester with plans to accomplish skills that would eventually bring me to an understanding of what a great writer is. Entering this course I was worried because I have struggled with writing in the past, and writing has never been my strongest area. I feared writing classes in middle and high school, and had the same expectations for this course. I had wondered if I was ready for college English, and was worried that my skills and abilities would not be one the level they needed to be for college courses. My attitude and understanding of my writing process have both changed since the beginning of this semester. One thing that really helped my attitude and confidence was the fact that I was able to complete the assignments and get a decent grade. I was worried that I might not be able to do college level writing, and when I started completing the assignments and learning new ways to write my confidence and attitude changed. Another thing that really helped me throughout this course was that there was plenty of reading and information available to guide me through my assignments. I realized that there was more freedom when it comes to writing than I had experienced in high school. Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
Throughout the semester I have learned an astounding amount of information. The English 101 curriculum has not only taught me how to write in general, but also taught me a variety of ways to get my point across to the reader. Before I took English 101 I was an average writer at best, but now that I am taking a class that focuses on writing strategies I feel that I have been able to improve as a writer. During the course we were taught how to write an informative essay as well as how to write a persuasive essay. The type of writing that this class has taught me will most definitely help me with future classes as well as my future in the real world. For me, being a college writer means writing well-organized essays that readers enjoy reading. Being a well rounded writer was also important. Each unit in this class challenged me to write in a well-organized, concise way. During each unit, we conducted some sort of revision activity where I was exposed to other students’ writing. As I read their work, I picked up on their use of transition words and separation of paragraphs to make the essay flow. Naturally, I began implementing more transition words in my own work and learned the appropriate ways to split paragraphs. The structure of the class was key to the organization of my ideas which was crucial to the development of my essay. During the third unit of this class, we were asked to identify an issue on campus, conduct research on the issue, and finally propose a solution to correct the issue. At first, it was difficult to get my ideas down and figure out what it was I would research. What I learned in class allowed me to first identify the issue I would research, write a rough draft, and hear what others had written before the final paper was due. This helped me to identify the main points, brainstorm and figure out what additional research I would need to find to support my argument. Being able to organize my thoughts from the beginning made writing the paper a much easier process. This course has helped me to grow as a writer and make
Humanities 1301 (Introduction to Humanities) is a literature course which links student between their lives and the works of human creativity and ideas. This is done through participation in art work, research, reading literature, providing peer review and summary of the selected books, watching cultivating video, visiting museum, monuments, and architectural building. Students are also exposed to several cultures around the world to which they are asked to comment. Their work are expressed through presentations, exposé, written memos, peer review, book summary, oral presentation, and journal articles. The purpose of this writing prompt is to review all portions of course number CRN 92776, Spring 2016, delivered by Dr. Laurel Lacroix, PhD, in Houston Community College, Stafford Campus, on Wednesdays from 14:00 to 15:30.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
As the year progressed, it only became more difficult to keep up with the assignments coming in, due to the fact that there were so many things to do. During my free time, I would attempt to work ahead in this course, but I realized that there is no rush when it comes to writing if you want your stories to be good and easily comprehendible to the reader. One assignment that came to mind that helped me with the writer's perspective on things was the process analysis essay. This assignment made me grow not just as a writer, but as a devoted person to find key information about the topic at hand. Secondly, this course helped me understand the value of revising your work, when it comes to grammar, punctuation, and word clarity.
English 1303 was my first ever college english class. I had many expectations in my mind regarding the class. First of all I hoped I would make new friends. Since the first day of class I got to knew every classmate very well. Secondly I expected to learn new vocabulary. Fortunately, we had vocab boost activity which helped me learn new words and improve my writing and speaking skills. Other expectations that I had with this class were using what I've learnt here and applying the skills to my other classes such as learning the new MLA8 format was helpful for me in my government and FYS classes.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
I feel as though this class has helped me become a more polished and professional writer. When I first entered English 110, I was extremely unsure and lacked confidence in my writing. I believe that this point can be partly attributed to the fact that I had always had my instructors holding my hand and helping me through the writing process in high school. My senior English teacher always reminded us that college would be much more challenging than her class was and then she would go on to tell us stories of professors who gave out zeros for tiny oversights within a paper. This combined with general apprehension about college life left me terrified. I had always been a strong writer in high school; I know how to form an argument and support
During this course I learned a lot about myself as a writer. I learned that I can write tremendously well if I put my mind to it. When we received writing assignments from the professor, I would not be interested in doing it so I would procrastinate most of the time. But when I actually took my time to perfect an essay, I did well. I really did not know that I had that sort of knowledge in me. Pushing myself to greatness got me to where I am academically at the moment.
I what i would like to get out of this class, i would like to improve on my writing skills. For example i want to be able to write essays easier and learn the write way to do so
When I started Creative Writing I had little to no goals for writing. I was taking this class because it is an English credit that will help me graduate. I did think that Creative Writing would be more fun then most English classes and it was. In this class there is a lot more writing involved, writing notebooks, discussions, and assignments. I think this repetition helped gain more skills in writing, which is something I’ve always felt I lacked. In other English classes it would change each unit to writing a paper to reading then to a grammar lesson, which is great when you are trying to teach a lot of information in a short time, but in creative writing it focus on one thing writing. Teaching me different ways to write and help identify and focus on this assignment, with daily learning notebooks and discussion. It showed me the freedom writing offers.
