Employee Motivation - Theory and Practice What is motivation? Motivation is difficult to explain and even harder to 'turn on' in people. Webster defines motivation as ?an act or process of motivating; the condition of being motivated; a force, stimulus, or influence: incentive or drive? (?Motivation?). It is most often the job of the manager to use motivation to drive employees to accomplish acts which they normally would not have done. The study of motivation helps managers understand what prompts people to initiate action, what influences their choice of action, and why they persist in their action over time (Daft and Marcic 444). Over the years many theorists have studied the human condition of motivation, and learned various techniques to help managers figure out what makes employees seek to attain higher knowledge, wealth, prosperity, and happiness in their work. One most noted theorist is Abraham Maslow; he carried out his investigations into human behavior and developed the hierarchy of needs theory. Maslow suggested that there are five sets of goals which may be called basic needs. These five are physiological, safety, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization?that exists in a hierarchical order and can be compared to climbing a ladder. Once a lower level need has been fulfilled, the person seeks to fulfill the next higher level. This progression leads to self actualization as being the highest level (Daft and Marcic 447-49). Another best known contributor to the behavior of individuals at work was Douglas McGregor. McGregor had an extensive background in management and consultation; he was also a trained psychologist (Daft and Marcic 37). In 1960, he published a book called, ?The Human Side of Enterprise.? In his book he examined two models which he called Theory X and Theory Y. The Theory X management assumes most people prefer to be directed, are not interested in assuming responsibility, and want safety above everything. Management attempts to structure, control and closely supervise their employees with no opportunity to fulfill themselves. On the other side of the spectrum, McGregor developed Theory Y, which describes individual?s behavior differently. This theory assumes people are not by nature lazy and unreliable. In short, managers should remember to always support, communicate, and praise the work of an employee, which could be the most beneficial reward of all (Bruce and Pepitone 46-47). In conclusion, motivation is hard to ?turn on? in employees and is not a simple matter. Motivation involves a lot of elements. However, if a manager can study the theories and practice the techniques to improve motivation; managers, in turn, will be rewarded with productive employees. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born May 21, 1960. He was murdered by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver on November 28, 1994. Jeffrey Dahmer was born in West Allis, Wisconsin. When Dahmer was growing up his mother was greedy for attention and often left Dahmer to his own devices starting in first grade. While in elementary school Dahmer was considered quiet and uncommunicative by his peers, the teachers thought this was a sign of neglect caused by his mother’s illness. Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer came into the world at 4.34pm on the 21st of May at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee 1960. Little did his parents know at the time of his birth that there son would become one of America's most infamous serial killers, not only for the amount of victims which he had killed, but also for dismembering them and his odd tendencies. Jeffrey's childhood started like any other, he had two parents who loved and adored there son dearly. They would give him what ever his heart desired. Joyce Dahmer started a scrap book on her son recording events that happened in his life, his first step, his first accident, his first tooth, his first haircut and even his first scolding. While Jeffrey was still very young his father worked long hours in his laboratory and his mother worked as a machine instructor. But the carrying of Jeffrey had been hard on Joyce Dahmer and every little thing seemed to annoy her. So Lionel being the husband that he was and wanting the best for his wife decided to move to his mothers house in West Allis, but the crack's in the marriage started to show early.
Dahmer served his time at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage, Wisconsin, where he ultimately declared himself a born-again Christian (Montaldo). Dahmer and inmate Jesse Anderson were beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver while working in the prisons gym, on November 28, 1994. Dahmer died of severe head trauma while on his way to the hospital

The conventional view of management consisted of three propositions which are called Theory X (Shafritz & Hyde,2012).
For example, implicating restorative justice regimes in communities when dealing with petty crimes becomes more useful and does not waste resources. Restorative justice can easily be used in communities where we are trying to reintegrate individuals, by using a restorative justice based intervention instead of incarceration, communities can build and create norms to help keep the peace. With the help of restorative justice, societal transformations can occur, due to funds being used towards communities, we may be able to change on going issues which will help negate violence and deviancy. Once the notion of decarceration commences, Jacobs (2007) talks about how we can slowly release individuals into society, by using alternative sentences and probation (pg. 699). Decarceration also does not contribute to conflict theft, which is when the harms done are mediated by lawyers and courts and take away these harms as their own property, instead it will lap back to the victim and offender so they may take control of the matter at hand (Christie, 1977, pg. 5). By eliminating courts and lawyers regarding criminal deviancy, we can concentrate with dealing with certain harms within the community. For example,

A need for management ideas arise which lead to classical contributors such as Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol generating management theories such as Taylor’ Scientific Management and Fayol’s Administrative Management. In the late 1920’s and early 1930’s the Hawthorne studies were conducted where Elton Mayo was the predominate figure and contributed to the Behavioural viewpoint. This brought about a Human Relations Movement which included Douglas McGregor’s Theory X and Theory Y approach. Similarities and differences can be found between the theories due to the relevant time period they were implemented, the motives or goal of the theory and how they view organisations. However the use of contingency theory can help negate the dissimilarities which occur as it allows the relevant elements from each theory to be applied to specific situations.
