Jeffrey Lionel Dahmer was born May 21, 1960. He was murdered by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver on November 28, 1994. Jeffrey Dahmer was born in West Allis, Wisconsin. When Dahmer was growing up his mother was greedy for attention and often left Dahmer to his own devices starting in first grade. While in elementary school Dahmer was considered quiet and uncommunicative by his peers, the teachers thought this was a sign of neglect caused by his mother’s illness. The victim's name was Steven Hicks. Dahmer picked up Hicks hitchhiking and offered to take the hitchhiker to his house for some alcohol. After a while Hicks wanted to leave but Dahmer didn’t want him to leave, so Dahmer hit Hicks in the head with a dumbbell and strangled Hicks with the dumbbell. Dahmer then stripped the corpse of its clothes and masturbated over the corpse. He hid the corpse in the crawl space of his home and dissected the man. Dahmer dissolved Hicks flesh with acid in a toilet and crushed the bones with a sledge hammer. Dahmer scattered the remains outside his home. In 1981, Dahmer was charged with drunk and disorderly conduct. On August 7, 1982 Dahmer was arrested for indecent exposure, he exposed himself to a crowd of women and children. In 1985 Dahmer stated to frequent bathhouses for homosexual sex. Dahmer described his early experiences as frustrating because his sexual partners moved around and would not stay still. To combat his frustration Dahmer admitted sleeping pills to his partners and then he would rape their unconscious bodies. After this incident happening twelve times, the bathhouses banned Dahmer of their use. Dahmer’s third serial murder was a twenty-two year old bisexual named Richard Guerrero. Dahmer met Guerrero outside a gay bar and convinced Guerrero to spend the night at Dahmer’s grandmother’s house for fifty dollars. Guerrero was strangled with a leather strap after being drugged by sleeping pills. Dahmer states that after he killed Guerrero, he performed oral sex on the corpse. Dahmer, for the most part, would go to gay clubs, public baths, or other places his sort of victim would frequent so he could pursue and allure them. From there, he’d bring them to his apartment with promises of sexual favors, drinks, pictures, or just plain hanging out. Then, after getting drunk, he’d crush up a small handful of sleeping pills to render his prey unconscious, following this with either fulfilling his own urges or by strangling them. He’d then rape many of the resulting corpses, dismember them, occasionally eat some flesh, and soak the body in acid to liquefy the flesh. He’d occasionally preserve heads, limbs, or bones and keep them around the apartment to eat and pleasure himself to later. All of this, in total, would be a several-week-long process. Grendel, conversely, took the more expeditious approach. He’d simply wait for the warriors to fall asleep after their partying, sneak in, smash or throw people around the mead hall, and quickly leave. Despite Joyce experiencing a difficult pregnancy, Dahmer was a healthy child who was wanted and adored by both his parents. However, his mother did start to become distant to him as she refused to breast feed him and started demonstrating unstable behavior along with substance abuse. Meanwhile, his father was pursuing his doctoral for chemistry in Iowa which limited the time Lionel had with his family. At age five, Dahmer’s little brother was born and that was when the feeling of neglect set in him. For the first time, the little attention provided from his parents had to be shared with his brother David. Dahmer began displaying extreme shyness but also severe tantrums. During the ages of six and seven, Dahmer “was regarded by other children as odd and bizarre (Martens, 2005).” Even though he did not show any interest in developing genuine social relations, Dahmer did demonstrate a fascination with bug and animal dissections. When Dahmer was six he had “undergone hernia surgery, when he woke up from the anesthesia he was worried someone could have cut his genitals, the pain lasted for one week and after a long recovery period his parents remember he turned to be very loner (Giannetakis, n.d.).” It is believed that at age eight Dahmer had been sexually abused by a boy in his neighborhood (Hickey, 2013). If this event did occur, it could explain why he developed destructive sexual fantasies at the young age of twelve. Despite him being aloof, it has been reported that he would seek attention by faking epileptic seizures at school and local shops. By his adolescent years, he developed compulsive masturbation which would eventually lead to legal trouble (Silva, 2002). At the age of fourteen, Dahmer turned to alcohol abuse in order to overcome his feeling of despair and compulsive thoughts of sexual violent acts.
The infamous Jeffrey Dahmer and Hannibal Lector have been looked at multiple times and no one can get an exact reason as for why they ever committed such insane crimes. Although one is a fictional character and the other is real the common characteristic they share is a psychopathic personality. Most doctors can agree that psychopathy is a mental illness opposed to a choice of character unlike other criminals. They all tend to agree on that specific issue, researchers and doctors are unaware of proper treatments or if psychopathy is treatable. Many doctors will describe psychopaths as manipulative, with callous emotions and lack of empathy for anybody (Kerns). Most doctors start research with hope of discovering something new or discovering a treatment but most end with the same conclusions they had known in the beginning. Doctors have looked at research and brain scans which in a psychopath do show differences compared to a “normal” person (Kerns). Doctors can all agree that studies show differences between a normal brain and a psychopathic one, what they don’t understand is how to treat or prevent crimes from happening or why a psychopath can’t control urges that they get. The fact that psychopaths understand that viscous crimes are very much tragic and definitely illegal, which includes the possibility of being put in a mental institution or prison. Jeffrey Dahmer was an eccentric individual. He was known to be a kind man but very disturbed as well. He showed to be anti-social at a very young age, and it continued to get worse. He must have had cognitive issues that grew with him even until his last murder. I can only speculate that this uncured mental illness lead Dahmer to develop and refine his inability to empathize with society; which in turn, lead him to engage in cruelty without mentally comprehending the victim’s suffering. Although the causes for psychopathy are unclear, some suggest that psychogenic aspects can outline abnormalities which may be present in psychopaths (Schmalleger 2014). When looking at Dahmer’s distant relationship with his parents early on in his childhood, I became conscious of the fact the lack of affection from his parents which may have lead him to develop twisted views on how one should display affection to others, thus prompting him to show psychotic behavior later on in life (The profile of Jeffrey Dahmer 1996).
