Reflection Paper 6: Emerging/Young Adulthood
While reflecting on Emerging/Young Adulthood I can say that I am at the beginning of this stage. My current age of 19 and I am in the transition process of taking on the responsibilities and the stability of an adult. As the textbook describes I am one of the older adolescents that is seeking for an education which means that I am currently postponing the traditional adult responsibilities. I am seeking for an education because I want to have a well-payed job and because I want to be able to provide my parents and two younger siblings with a better life. Through my experience in college so far, I am able to say that I have gained a lot of knowledge and I hope this continues. According to the textbook the more years of higher education a person pursues the deeper and more

post-formal that a person’s reasoning becomes.
I also think that college has open my mind and has made me aware of various topics in the world that I never thought about. Through this It has also made me aware of myself and how my thinking has changed. For example, some of the things that I am aware each day is poverty. While I drive back home I see several people on the streets who are homeless. Every time I see this my heart drops but one of the things that always come to my mind is how each person has their own difficulties and how much I would like to help them. But at the same time I have noticed that I sometimes, I intentionally ignore it because their nothing that I can do. Another thing that I like about attending college is that it has clear up my mind of prejudice. I like being around different people with different background and cultures. Because of this it has allowed to me understand different cultures and it has allowed me to not jump into conclusions
but rather try to understand their perspective. What I would like to develop in myself is self disciple, honest, responsible and humbleness. I would like to develop these traits because It is something that I think will help me later on and because even though I am not an arrogant person I would like to have these traits as my goal because I would not want to became a dishonest and arrogant person. I would also like to to help other through my career and give back to my community. I would like to make a difference in the world even if it is just a small difference. What I am also looking for is to have happiness, a job, family and to be able to help other. In conclusion although I am just at the beginning of the emergence of adulthood stage I would like to see myself grow a human in every aspect and I would like to a sense of accomplishment as I enter the stage of adulthood.
emerging adults report that they get along better with their parents now than they did in their mid-teens (Arnett, 2015, p. 51 ). Most parents feel they have a better relationship now with their emerging adult children now too . The national Clark poll shows that 55% of emerging adults have daily or almost daily contact with their parents (Arnett, 2015, p. 50). Parents and children have more frequent contact and enjoy spending more free time together (Gillen, 2015)
College is a place where people go to learn and to grow as a person. Most people go to college for the same reasons. They want to set a good foundation for getting a job, experience new things, or because their parents wanted them to. All of those reasons apply to me also.
However on the other side of the spectrum college does have its benefits. A college places its students in real life settings away from home. It lets the students begin making decisions that they will deal with for their entire life.
College makes students see life as a young adult because the student’s parents are not around while they are enrolled at a university. College will give people a feeling of freedom by not being around their parents when having to make difficult decisions. Students can do whatever they want to do without any hesitation. It will let students make mistakes and learn from them. Students being to make life long relationships. Students basically gain independence when they are out there by themselves with no type of help. Students that are in college can be exposed to worst things like drugs and alcohol. Students will learn that it is time to grow out and come to the reality of working and making a living of something. Also, in college students experience fraternities or sororities they can join unlike high school. Students learn that if paper works needs filling out they are held responsible for filing the paperwork out. The student has to make sure he or she has food to eat so they might have to eventually get a job to buy the food. Freshmans get to experience all the new activities or clubs that are at the college or university they are attempting to attend. The seniors of the college realize that it soon will be time to move out of their guardian’s house and start a journey of their own by moving out and getting their personal place. At some universities they have dorms, which sometimes be shared with roommates . Roommates
Emerging Adulthood represents the period of development from late teens through their twenties, mainly focusing on the ages 18-25. This is the period which people start exploring and realizing the capabilities of their lives, which then helps them characterize as adults and no longer teenagers. This topic of psychology is compelling to me because it’s a stage that every adult has lived through, it’s interesting that we have all experienced it differently based on our life circumstances and demographics. It’s interesting to see the changes throughout the years and eventually it will be easier for young people to explore these years as more young adults are going to school nowadays. It teaches me to further understand why emerging adults go through
Extensive demographic and cultural shifts have taken place over the past few decades that have made late adolescence and early twenties into a new transitional developmental period known as emerging adulthood for young individuals across industrialized societies. Arnett (2000) argues that emerging adulthood is a “distinct period of the life course” that is “characterized by change and exploration of possible life directions” (469). Additionally, a critical area of identity exploration during emerging adulthood is love and romantic relationships. Arnett contends that “demographic changes in the timing of marriage and parenthood in recent decades has led to prolonged periods of adolescence and delayed adulthood transitions” (470). By postponing
In A Wizard of Earthsea an archetypal pattern of death and rebirth highlights Ged’s journey from adolescence to adulthood. In “Myth and Archetypal Criticism” we read, “Images of death and rebirth […] usually suggest some kind of emotional, moral, or spiritual rebirth”(Young 70). We see one or more of these aspects in each of Ged’s rebirths, especially in his last rebirth in this book. Ged’s coming of age process in this novel is also illuminated by the use of binary oppositions, one of which can even be seen in the book’s title; earth/sea. The relationship between these oppositions helps us to better understand Ged’s journey into adulthood as being also a journey into the self.
In the article “One Foot Out of the Nest: How Parents and Friends Influence Social Perceptions in Emerging Adulthood,” there was a study about emerging adulthood. The study aimed to understand about how attachment-related feelings toward friends and parents affect perceptions of new people and developing relational patterns during emerging adulthood.
Attending college has helped me see the right benefits that will help me achieve my ultimate dream goals. First of all, I want to be able to learn how to relate to different cultures, ethnicities, and personalities, and also be able to understand different backgrounds, the way people from diverse culture think and act and their lifestyles; In addition, I want to learn how to adapt to new situations including dealing with responsibilities such as using Blackboard and making sure that all my assignments are completed and submitted on time. Furthermore, I will have to learn how to adapt to being an adult and taking care of my own needs.
Adulthood has often been associated with independence. It serves as a turning point in life where one has to take responsibility for oneself and no longer being dependent on his or her family. Early adulthood, usually begins from late teens or early twenties and will last until the thirties (Santrock, 2013). Early adulthood revolves around changes and exploration while middle and late adulthood are more of stability. The transition from adolescence and adulthood differs among every individual. The onset of the transition is determined by many factors such as culture, family background, and the personality of the individual. Emerging adulthood (as cited in Santrock, 2014) is the term to describe the transition period from adolescence to adulthood.
As individuals age they will come to a point in their lives where they are considered to be in middle adulthood. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016), middle adulthood is the range from 30-60 which involves physical and health changes (p. 477). Some individuals may take this time to reflect on their lives and be happy will all of the things they have done and look forward to what is still to come and there may be others who feel that should have changed things or even may experience a “midlife” crisis. AllPsychologyCareers website (2016) states, “Midlife crisis is a time of great emotional upheaval, anxiety, and drastic changes in behavior (para. 13). Middle adulthood can be a time of contentment or even regret.
From my college experience, I hope to gain many things. Obviously college is a time that students can truly become individuals. When I attend college I will have the opportunity to become more independent and to take on new responsibilities. I have always relied on my parents for support, but at college I will be on my own and will have to push myself harder. This will help me to become more mature and will help me grow in character. I have long awaited for the time to be independent and now is the time that I shall prove myself.
It just shows you that you will have to make sacrifices for certain that you love just to get something you need to be done. College helps you expand your mind for other things. It helps you expand and make you look for multiple options instead of just having one. You can come in with one vision but end up having more than you thought you would
2. Also college broadens your horizons in ways some can not even imagine. It allows you to do things you thought never were possible.
I do believe that there is such a thing as a mid life crisis. There are multiple causes that can cause a midlife crisis, mostly being outside sources such as issues with a career and issue with children. But many sources of a midlife crisis can be from within a person. Such a deep sense of reject, a fear of humiliation among among successful colleagues. When people go through a life crisis they will cope in different ways. Something that I read on the huffington post, to paraphrase a crisis does not just appear in a out of thin air. It come from a long time of exhaustion and sudden acknowledgement of the passage of time. But that usually begins to panic about health issue.
