Ecotherapy incorporates many different components, such as: wilderness excursion work, horticultural therapies, time and stress management, animal-assisted therapies, along with many other natural therapeutic and healing techniques. According to Craig Chalquist of John F. Kennedy University, as early as the 1980’s, many individuals in more industrialized areas began spending approximately 90% of their time indoors. By 2009 that same amount had increased to 95%-99% of people’s time being inside which reduced individuals to being outside on 1%-5% of the time. Factors included with being confined to indoor space include the following: housing noise, income, indoor air, and lighting, close proximate with others, lack of motivation for physical activity, sedentary lifestyle, among other factors that create a large risk for negative impact on a person’s lifestyle. Depression, problem solving skills, psychological disorders, trouble when communicating with others, increase of illness, lack of motivation to thrive, increased stress, severe tiredness, problems at work, mood disorders, and other negative factors are in direct correlation with a confined lifestyle that does not include natural environments or at minimum a moderately active lifestyle. According to the “Feel Better Outside, Feel Better Inside” research report by Paul Farmer at the University of Essex in the United Kingdom, “Ecotherapy has been proven to improve mental health, boost self esteem, help people with mental health problems to return to work, improve physical health, and reduce social isolation.” Over the course of five years, the research and support contributed its resources to 12,000 participants that had a mental disorder or were at risk for a mental disorder by incorporating
What is aromatherapy? In an article titled “Phytotherapy Research” by Amr Edris, he describes aromatherapy as, “The use of essential oils and their volatile constituents are widely to prevent and treat human disease.” Aromatherapy is said to be an alternate form of medicine that uses essential oils, which are made up of volatile plant materials. With these essential oils it is said that they help to alter a person’s mood, health, mind, and cognitive function. It is also said that aromatherapy could substitute as treatment or prevention for certain diseases. There are many different types of oils used for aromatherapy in different ways for different outcomes. Such methods include the topical application, aerial diffusion, and direct inhalation. Topical application is any direct contact with the oil, used such as placing the oil in a bath or directly on to the skin. Aerial diffusion is where the oil is placed on the carpet around you or even on to a pillow or bed. Direct inhalation is a method where the oil is placed on the hands and rubbed together then while cupping your hands under your face to inhale the oils, this has a very powerful effect when used. Some uses of aromatherapy are for used as anti-depressants, relive stress, help with relaxation, insomnia, acne, itching and many more. To cure anxiety lavender, chamomile, rose, vanilla, and cardamom oils are all used for this. Lemon, jasmine, rosemary, sandalwood, and peppermint oils are all used to help with depression. When dealing with fatigue it is said that basil, cedarwood, clove, and eucalyptus all help. Headaches can be cured with lemon grass, thyme, ginger, and cinnamon oils. Caraway, chamomile, lavender, and rosemary oils are all used to help with menstrual cramps. The...
The purpose of therapeutic recreation is to enable all individuals to achieve quality of life and optimal health through meaningful experiences in recreation and leisure. In this paper the definition of therapeutic recreation will be discussed as well as what should be included in the definition and what should be rejected. This definition will mainly focus on health and use the Health Promotion Model to further explain my choice to focus on health and well-being. I will also be discussing the importance of inclusion in therapeutic recreation for different learning styles in many environments, and the significance of diversity in the community and what we hope to achieve by being fully inclusive.
College students are commonly drowning in stress, and oftentimes they have no idea how to relieve their stress in a healthy manner. They are either too busy or worried about stigma to go to traditional therapy, and it can be hard to find healthy coping skills for stress on your own. Ecotherapy, or basically interaction with nature, is a healthy and completely free way to reduce stress; all you need is the ability to go outside, preferably in a natural space like a forest or field, or in a park or similar area. Ecotherapy has been proven to reduce stress and relieve symptoms of mental illnesses, plus with the added benefit of promoting physical activity, which in itself can reduce stress, there really aren’t any cons to this form of therapy.
A recent study shows that aromatherapy shows mild effectiveness in Dementia Treatment. Aromatherapy with chamomile, lavender and rosemary with other essential oils may give relief from anxiety as well as emotional disturbances in adults with dementia. Aromatherapy is a part of medical treatment and plant essential oils in Aromatherapy are used for inhaling or massaging into the skin. Aromatherapy helps to ease agitation, improves cognitive function of the seniors. When you plan to continue aromatherapy for dementia treatment, you must consult with a medical professional who will discuss about the benefits of aromatherapy and also its side effects because clinical evidence shows that aromatherapy are not much effective treatment for dementia.
“Integration is a method of utilising more than one theory in the belief that by combining or integrating these theories the chance of a successful outcome for the client is increased.”
To sum up everything stated above, it is necessary to mention that there are three effective tools that help to manage time for students: correct planning, stress management, and evaluation of time management. It is really vital for each student to know how to use their time wisely in order to improve their performance, reduce stress, as well as increase self-awareness.
NZTC (2015) states that stress is one of the biggest factor that can affect a student’s study this is due to the pressure of the high demand of their time. Being stressed affects you mentally, socially and physically and have many negative side effects a few of these are exhaustion, headaches, sleeplessness and loss of appetite. Stress isn’t good for your health or well-being, this is why it is important to identify any causes of stress and to have strategies that will help manage stress. Going to the doctor for advice, searching the internet and seeking help from student support are some of the strategies that can help you deal with stress. (NZTC, 2015) There are many different steps that you can use to help reduce stress the only problem is finding the right ones for you. One of those steps that I will be using, is to break down your work load into smaller tasks that are manageable and can be prioritized easily. Another of the steps could be to use physical activities to help work off stress, or I could use yoga and breathing exercises to help control stress and helps you to relax. Most importantly, I should talk to someone, whether it be a family member or a friend, I can even talk to the Student Support Team if stress is affecting your
Mental illness constitutes nearly one sixth of all health-related disorders. With the population on a rise, altering values, life-style, unemployment and frequent instability in incomes, lack of social support and increasing insecurity, it is predicted that there would be substantial increase in the number of people suffering from mental illness in both urban and rural areas.
Stress is something that everyone has to deal with in life, whether it is good or bad stress. Stress management techniques are a great way to deal with stress. Some of the stress management techniques that I learned from this course are prioritization, scheduling, and execution. Using these techniques has effectively helped me deal with my own stress. When it comes to dealing with stress I still have many strengths and weaknesses that I will explain. Some stressors I have in my life that I will discuss are psychointrapersonal, social, life events, and daily hassles. Next, I will give my opinion on my post-course survey, and compare and contrast it to my pre-course survey scores. Finally, I will explain my last goals for this stress management course.
People changing a lifestyle of technology to a lifestyle where there is an inclusion in nature, demonstrates a great effect on one’s health. As Gretchen Reynolds states, “It hasn’t even been made clear that nature itself is responsible for the greatest health benefits — they may come instead from physical activity, sunlight or, if you stroll with others, camaraderie” (1). Because of this, forest bathing gets people to prioritize their mental health, which can be implemented by only taking a walk around the park. Rahawa Haile also mentions that “individuals recovering from surgery with a view of a garden can heal faster than those with a view of a brick wall, can non-immersive exposure to nature benefit people in other ways”
Most of us are aware that spending time in nature is good for us. Not so many, however, can say exactly why this is the case. Although understanding the exact reasons why the natural world can positively influence your general well-being isn’t going to increase the benefit, it might just inspire you to get out there and spend more time in our planet’s very own, natural quality-of-life-enhancer - nature itself. Below, we’ve listed five of these reasons in hope of doing just that…
At a young age, I was exposed to outdoor play. I am still physically active today. Now that we have discovered some of the physical benefits of being outside, we can now talk about the mental health
The environment and health are very closely linked. The environment in which we inhabit and go about our daily lives, directly impacts on our physical, mental and social well-being. There are biological, chemical and physical factors that can affect human health in a physical and mental way. The World Health Organisation states that "health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO 1948), meaning that although many factors relating to health are associated with environmental pollution, they can also be caused by the environment in which we work and live in. The relationship between the environment and health, can however be quite complex. Human health is not only as a result of air, water and ground pollution, but also things such as food, genetics, life style and quality, which directly affect human susceptibility to illness, disease and possibly death. Disruptions to the environment, such as substance dispersal, climate change, acidification, ground pollution, photochemical air pollution and over fertilisation can also impact on human health. Therefore, there are direct and indirect links to the environment and health issues.
The natural conservancy is an organization that is out to conserve the lands and waters on which life depends on. In this paper, I will argue that the natural conservancy organization mission statement captures the true essence of environmentalism. The mission statement of the Nature Conservancy represents the true essence of environmentalism since it recognizes the intrinsic value of all living beings while prioritizing the importance of protecting nature for future generations.
Health is considered a complete wellness of a body including physical, mental and social well-being and Holistic Health is considered a wellness of a whole body including mind, body and spirit. According to American Holistic Medicine Association “Holistic medicine is the art and science of healing that addresses the whole person – body, mind and spirit” (Wollumbin, page 3). Holistic Health is an alternate way to treat, prevent, and wellness of an illness and achieves the best possible level of health. It focuses on the whole body rather than just symptoms or diseases. It is an approach to heal the physical, psychological, environmental, spiritual, nutritional health of one’s being. For each individual, the definition of holistic health is different and in simple words it is an alternate way of treatment where physical, mental, emotional and spiritual works equally together to attain a health. In western medicine, standard treatment is given with drugs or surgery according to symptoms or diseases or injuries where a doctor or a physician determines the ways of treatment and the patient has to follow the recommendations. Whereas, holistic health is a complete opposite way to treat the illness where patients cooperate in their illnesses, take the responsibility of their treatments, make their own decision for own level of well-being and thoroughly participate in their health care plan.
