College students are commonly drowning in stress, and oftentimes they have no idea how to relieve their stress in a healthy manner. They are either too busy or worried about stigma to go to traditional therapy, and it can be hard to find healthy coping skills for stress on your own. Ecotherapy, or basically interaction with nature, is a healthy and completely free way to reduce stress; all you need is the ability to go outside, preferably in a natural space like a forest or field, or in a park or similar area. Ecotherapy has been proven to reduce stress and relieve symptoms of mental illnesses, plus with the added benefit of promoting physical activity, which in itself can reduce stress, there really aren’t any cons to this form of therapy. …show more content…
Just because these methods exist does not mean that they are the best or only way to go; in fact, they do not work for everyone and the people they don’t work for deserve another option. And even if these methods might work for someone, ecotherapy has benefits that other methods might not. Ecotherapy can be helpful for people who do not want to use other therapies or for those who are unable, whether due to monetary or personal issues. Some people do not want to associate themselves with the stigma of therapy or prescription pills, and that is their own right. Ecotherapy can be an option for these people because it is not associated with the stigma other options might be; no one is going to think that utilizing nature to reduce stress or mental illness symptoms is bad, and a lot of ways of using ecotherapy are really just normal activities. Ecotherapy can also be used along with other therapies or prescription pills, it is up to the person using it. There aren’t as many restrictions on how ecotherapy can be used as other therapies might have, and it is an easy and open option for almost
I would like to assert for this paper, as an overview of the whole course, that some kinds of alternative medicine and mental healing do indeed work. The question is, does it have a neurological basis of brain=behavior or is there something more at work like hope or other emotions that are so far intangible in the human brain? Certain things we may never be able to find in the brain, but either way, I would like to assert that even though brain=behavior does account for most behaviors and actions in the body, that there may at least be something more. I will review all the literature I found and let the decision be yours, but also add in my two cents on the total findings for this paper.
What is aromatherapy? In an article titled “Phytotherapy Research” by Amr Edris, he describes aromatherapy as, “The use of essential oils and their volatile constituents are widely to prevent and treat human disease.” Aromatherapy is said to be an alternate form of medicine that uses essential oils, which are made up of volatile plant materials. With these essential oils it is said that they help to alter a person’s mood, health, mind, and cognitive function. It is also said that aromatherapy could substitute as treatment or prevention for certain diseases. There are many different types of oils used for aromatherapy in different ways for different outcomes. Such methods include the topical application, aerial diffusion, and direct inhalation. Topical application is any direct contact with the oil, used such as placing the oil in a bath or directly on to the skin. Aerial diffusion is where the oil is placed on the carpet around you or even on to a pillow or bed. Direct inhalation is a method where the oil is placed on the hands and rubbed together then while cupping your hands under your face to inhale the oils, this has a very powerful effect when used. Some uses of aromatherapy are for used as anti-depressants, relive stress, help with relaxation, insomnia, acne, itching and many more. To cure anxiety lavender, chamomile, rose, vanilla, and cardamom oils are all used for this. Lemon, jasmine, rosemary, sandalwood, and peppermint oils are all used to help with depression. When dealing with fatigue it is said that basil, cedarwood, clove, and eucalyptus all help. Headaches can be cured with lemon grass, thyme, ginger, and cinnamon oils. Caraway, chamomile, lavender, and rosemary oils are all used to help with menstrual cramps. The...
In Eastern cultures, meditation has been practiced for over two thousand years. Through this training a culture has developed in which an individual is empowered to engaged in preventative behaviors, which reduce stress and morbidity, resulting in a general state of wellbeing, with stability and mental peace in the face of everyday challenges (Richardson and Lutz, 2008). Over the last half-century, the western-scientific community has begun to evaluate the efficacy of the eastern methods of meditation. In the modern western world there is an over abundance of stress, pressure and over stimulation. These conditions often result in stress-related morbidity, high levels of anxiety and mental illnesses. This cause and effect relationship is well established, and typically emphasis is placed on symptom control and less on preventative behavior modification. There are clinically documented see table 1, meditation practices that can be taught over a short period of time to an individual which have been shown to have positive results. Meditation can be used preventatively in supporting immune function and during illness as a method to aid healing and wellbeing for nominal costs. This paper will make an literary examination of a variety of studies of which examine the role of meditation training in regards to promoting immune function in athletes, recovering cancer patients, in addition to reducing stress and promoting well being in business professionals, cancer patients and seasoned meditation practitioners.
Thesis: The use of alternative medicine in autistic kids should include medical supervision in order to avoid overdosing, internal bleeding, and organ failure.
Athletes train for weeks, months, or even years for one single event in their sport. They are relentless in their workouts and strength training. They go out and show what they can do for everyone to see. But is there more to it than what the eye can see? Mindfulness is a word used to describe one’s mental strength and concentration. Mindfulness is defined as “state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you carefully observe your thoughts and feelings without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to your current experience, rather than dwelling on the past or anticipating the future.” (Mindfulness). This is becoming a highly discussed practice used by many successful athletes. Lebron James has sworn by meditation before games or high pressure situations, along with Derek Jeter, and Olympic beach volleyball partners Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings. They are only a few of
OK. So you’ve heard, that meditation is beneficial for you, maybe you’ve read lists about the advantages of meditation. A ton of different kind of meditations are on-line, and you found several resources, articles, blog posts about the theme to select from. These articles state, that the meditation has countless benefits, which are also proven by scientific research. You can believe them, since eminent scientists carried out extensive research on this subject. And they suggest, you should try them, and of course you should practice it each day. Every day - or you won’t have those benefits.
Today’s doctors stand overly dependent on chemical pharmaceutics when drafting treatment plans for patients. Physicians should first endorse treatment plans involving natural, homeopathic medicines, especially when aiming to solve miniscule health issues.
Though Buddhism has long been a disciplined and strict religion since its’ beginning in the 3rd Century, it has recently gained positive utilitarian use within the psychological and neurological fields of science. Programs dedicated to improving and helping the lives of those who suffer from mental illness have started to incorporate the use of meditation as a form of treatment. Meditation is enforced in many schools of Buddhism as a method, or a way of life, to becoming enlightened. With growing qualitative and quantitative research on meditation, it becomes more evidential of the positive and life changing impact meditation serves in improving overall health of the mentally ill. Additionally, meditation can be implemented as a preventative
Aromatherapy With Candles and Wax Melts. Have you ever entered a bakery feeling stressed out about the details of your hectic schedule – only to leave the establishment feeling relaxed and as though all was right in the world? The power of scent is palpable. We can smell baby powder and be immediately transported back to a time when we had no worries about consuming our minds. We may become invigorated by citrusy aromas and calmed by scents such as lavender.
I also believe it to be highly rewarding. For the last 4 years I have practiced self-care. I cannot help others if I don’t care for myself mentally and physically. Yearly physicals, proper diet, exercise and time to myself daily are a must. Since I started school two years ago, I’ve had my fair share of stress. My first semester in school I struggled with minor health issues, and my mother was diagnosed with early dementia. I had to deal with a lot to finally get her in a place where she was happy and thriving. Through this, I have managed to hold an average GPA of 3.6, and I made Dean’s List twice. Daily meditation is also something I do daily. Regular walks and hikes with my dog and enjoying the beautiful area in which I live is another tool I utilize. I love to get out and enjoy the stillness of the woods just to re-group. If I’ve had a very stressful day I will go for a jog and then soak in the tub with candles and lavender oil. I strongly believe all of these tools have kept me strong and able to perform well. Should I find myself completely overwhelmed and in need of extra support, I have access to therapists, and I would like to believe that I will have a good relationship with my superiors so that I could discuss any professional concerns I
Mental Illness is one of the growing illness in United States. According to National Alliance of Mental Illness”1 in 5 adults experiences a mental health condition every year. 1 in 20 lives with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder.” If the person has a five family member, one of them could be diagnosed with mental illness. If there is 40 students in class room at least two of them could be living with serious mental illness. Although mental illness is something that familiar to us, there is still misunderstood and stigma towards mental illness. Then why many people still have a wrong knowledge and attitude toward mental illness?
Humans have eluded extinction for millennia with the help of medicine. Medicine today helps us restore our health to “normal” state. Normal of today is different from normal in the past and being normal means being average. Many use medicine to get back to normal and some use it for enhancing themselves. One medicine that stands out is steroids. Steroids help your body recover faster from injuries and are supposed to be therapeutic. However, many use steroids to enhance people’s performances in sports and create new heights. Today, we are reaching a point where we are able to modify genes and protect our newborns from common illnesses such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and even cancer. This technology does not stop there and is able to change physical abilities as well as metal abilities, protect our children from depression, and even elongate lives. Whether gene modification will be used
It is deeply alarming that ignoring mental health is systematically ignored as an important part of health promotion. This is shocking because, in theory, mental health is recognized as an important component of health, the close link between physical and mental health is recognized, and it is generally known that physical and mental health share many of the same social, environmental and economic components. We know that facilities dedicated to those with mental health problems are more vulnerable to the resources of physical diseases in many parts of the world, and it is essential that mental health promotion should not be equally affected
The natural conservancy is an organization that is out to conserve the lands and waters on which life depends on. In this paper, I will argue that the natural conservancy organization mission statement captures the true essence of environmentalism. The mission statement of the Nature Conservancy represents the true essence of environmentalism since it recognizes the intrinsic value of all living beings while prioritizing the importance of protecting nature for future generations.
Our planet is suffering from severe pollution, which ranges from contaminated air, water and soil as well. Humans are doing nothing to reduce the amount of pollution that is harming our earth. To understand how pollution works first you must understand that there are different types of pollution. The most common types of pollution and the ones that I will be focusing on which are the ones doing the most harm to our planet are air pollution, water pollution, soil contamination and littering. In order to help out and reduce pollution in our planet people need to be more aware of what these problems are and about the severe damages that they are causing our planet. Before industrialization really jumped into place and had an effect on large cities, nature had its own way of cleaning up its own air and itself. Wind scattered gases, rain washed many substances and the rest dissolved into the ground; while plants absorbed carbon dioxide and made it into oxygen. With big cities growing more every time and with more towns that were becoming more industrialized a lot of more waste began to be released into the environment and the atmosphere and soon this was more than enough for nature to handle. In order to stop and reduce pollution people need to understand the damage that it is causing our environment and our planet as well. People need to be more aware of how they can help out and do their part in reducing these problems that are causing our planet to die slowly with people not even noticing it.
