Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. A lot of the time, these troubles are from a problem in the phonological element of communication that affects classroom instruction but not other cognitive capabilities. “The Extraordinary Characteristics of Dyslexia” by Jake Horner is a definition essay on what it means to be dyslexic. Dyslexia is a common disease among ten to fifteen percent of the United States, where a human being has trouble in learning to read or interpret words, letters, and other symbols. Programs are reaching out to try to terminate as much distress of dyslexia as possible. Up and coming programs, The Wilson Language Program for example, are making their best efforts to start working with children from a young age with the slight signs of this common problem. Catching dyslexia earlier in life brings more assurance that the child’s future will have little to no setbacks or disadvantages for success. In order to enhance the regressive literacy of dyslexic individuals, the Wilson Language Program is progressively being implemented into regular schooling to ensure that reading standards are met, through structure, hours of research, copious practice, and strong evidence.
“Everybody needs something to hope for.” (p. 157) Says Dr. Spivak to Max after the death of Kevin. Indeed, he is right. Hope can solve problems for everyone. There are plenty of problems in the world. People struggle with disabilities and certain limiting conditions. Though the road may be rough, there are ways that these people cope with their problems and find hope. Max has a problem. He is dyslexic, which is always causing him to talk negatively about himself. Kevin also has an issue that makes his body small. Nevertheless, he makes up for it by making his brain bigger. Together, Kevin and Max become Freak the Mighty. Freak the Mighty fosters their friendship, makes them as one person, and helps them deal with their individual problems.

Even educators did not realize that I had dyslexia. Unfortunately, they did not see the signs. I would like to share with you, how I have endeavored obstacles throughout life and still do, to this day.
To begin with, dyslexia is not a something that can be seen right away. People do not have symptoms like nausea or congestion to show that have dyslexia. Dyslexia is a disability that happens in the brain. Even though it can not always be physically seen, there are a few ways to tell if someone has dyslexia. If a child has dyslexia, it can be shown by the child reading with pauses or reading the words incorrectly by placing another word in instead of the one written down. An example would be by confusing the word ‘cat’ with bat or word like “fell/fall and who/how” (Dyslexia) There can be many possible reasons for misreading these words, one reason would be because the brain is just too tired to be able to connect what it sees to what it is supposed to sound like. Non dyslexic people can tell how words are supposed to sound by dividing the word into “individual phonemes” (V., Nathan). Phonemes are similar to syllables. The definition of Dyslexia varies based on which research group you are talking to, but one of the most widely accepted ones is from the National Center for Learning Disabilities and the National Institute of Child Health. This is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It’s primarily associated with trouble reading but it can also affect writing, spelling, or even speaking. This learning disability doesn’t prevent my child from understanding complex ideas. It just takes her a longer time to work through the information. Dyslexia can’t be cured entirely but there are treatments available to help. People tend to think that Dyslexia is only related to reading, but it also causes problems in writing, math, and even music. “People with Dyslexia usually have an 'impoverished written product.' Some common mistakes are run-on sentences, fragments, punctuation and capitalization. They will also have many misspelled words (“What is Dyslexia?”). When dyslexics read and write, they don't usually notice errors. And when they read out loud, they will say what they think they wrote, but not what is actually on the page (“What is Dyslexia?”). Most dyslexics are very bright and have good imaginations, but they lose their momentum when trying to put their thoughts on paper. Most of their energy is spent trying to remember grammar rules and fix errors. So, their overall thoughts get lost.
Dyslexia is a disability caused by a malfunction that affects the part of the brain that controls the reading process along with verbal and non-verbal tasks which require the same section of the brain. Rather than an impairment of vision, dyslexia is a condition that impairs the way that the brain interprets written and spoken language. People with dyslexia tend to show an under activation in the left fusiform gyrus, the region that interprets words, distinguishes faces, and discerns complex objects (Sigurdardottir n.p.). Dyslexic people will generally display poor recognition abilities for faces and for other visually similar objects. For example, a dyslexic person might confuse the letter “b” for the letter “d”. Dyslexics show an impaired recognition when it comes to differentiating objects of the same category (Sigurdardottir n.p.). Since dyslexia affects the interpretation of written words it can also affect the individual’s mathematic ability as well.
