My child has dyslexia, both reading and spelling. The International Dyslexia Association defines dyslexia as a “language-based learning disability.” Dyslexia is the most commonly diagnosed learning disability. This is a common condition that affects the way the brain processes written and spoken language. It’s primarily associated with trouble reading but it can also affect writing, spelling, or even speaking. This learning disability doesn’t prevent my child from understanding complex ideas. It just takes her a longer time to work through the information. Dyslexia can’t be cured entirely but there are treatments available to help. The impact of this learning disability differs from each person depending on the severity of the condition. A child with dyslexia can easily fall behind in school if the appropriate teaching methods regarding this disability or not put into place. These students struggle with complex language skills such as grammar, understanding textbook material, and writing essays. People with dyslexia might also have difficulties with spoken language making it very hard to express themselves clearly or to fully understand what others mean when they speak. Unfortunately, dyslexia can affect a person’s self-image. These students are most likely going to face academic problems causing plenty of stress in frustration. Many will become discouraged and start to think of themselves as dumb or incapable. As a parent of a child with dyslexia, it is important to show my child emotional support and continuously reassure them that they are no less than anyone else. Not only is it important to restore their confidence but it is also crucial to reiterate the fact that there are many successful people out there with dyslexia such as Steven Spielberg, and Mohammed Ali. He incorporates his own life story to support his definition and his ideas in his essay. There are so many types of mental illnesses that affect people every day. When some people think of mental illnesses they think of the ones that would cause people to have physical symptoms as well, but that’s untrue, there are many more that you would never know anyone has if you were to see them on the street. As defined by the 2008 encyclopedia “a mental illness is any disease of the mind or brain that seriously affects a person’s ability or behavior. Symptoms of a mental illness may include extreme moods, such as excessive sadness or anxiety, or a decreased ability to think clearly or remember well.” A mentally ill person has severe symptoms that damage the person’s ability to function in everyday activities and situations. Every nation and every economic level can be affected by a mental illness. In the United States alone about 3% of the population has severe mental illness and to add to that number about 40% of people will experience a type of mental illness at least once in their lives. Some cases of mental illnesses can go away on their own, but some cases are so severe that they require professional treatment. There is so much more available to help people recover from their symptoms than in the past.
Reading comprehension is a skill that has to be learned by most of the population. This includes adults that have been reading for many years. There is a difference between reading and reading comprehension. Read is defined as, “to look at and understand the meaning of letters, words, or symbols” (Read, 2014). Comprehension is defined as, “the act or action of grasping with intellect” (Comprehension, 2014). Even as an adult, people may have difficulties with reading comprehension. There can be visual learning disorders such as dyslexia. There are many learning techniques and strategies that can negate or even overcome these visual learning disorders.
