Learning has always been a priority for me and I have always placed a high importance on knowledge. My friends jokingly call me a “nerd” because I always do my homework, participate in class, and ask questions when I do not understand something. This has always been first-nature to me; I love to learn. Although doing that extra challenge problem in math class, or researching in my free time about the human body may seem senseless or a waste of time to some people, I know these things will benefit me in the long-run. The willingness to learn is the foundation for deep learning. One must be prepared dedicate extra time to something they feel passionately about. Through making mistakes and experimenting with new approaches, one enriches their learning process and continues to grow. A positive attitude and commitment to work hard is the epitome of a deeper learning. As a student, there are so many ideas and concepts that surround us and can be overwhelming. The secret to investigating the ideas of others is to be inquisitive, yet believing. It is extremely difficult to balance these two contradicting ideas, but when one masters this skill they will be able to elaborate upon the ideas of others. Learning from other people is a great way to develop your own ideas as well. Confidence is a crucial when it comes to your own beliefs. Being confident with your knowledge will lead to new ideas that relate to those of your peers. In addition, confidence will take away any doubt or hesitance. Doubt inhibits learning and often limits people with great ideas. I believe one must be willing to delve into any situation with an open mind and the humility to be able to make mistakes. With the many types of learning styles, there are also many different areas of study. I believe it is imperative to be a well-rounded student by exploring different subjects. In the future we will interact with people with different backgrounds, different beliefs, and different ideals. With this in mind, being exposed to a variety of topics during college will help understand and relate with people that we may cross paths with in the future. I am eager to continue my education at Drake University and I will use these ideas to deepen my learning experience. With confidence, a positive attitude, and a willingness to make mistakes, I am ready to grow in knowledge and learn from experiences that will benefit me in my future occupation.

First, self-trust is one’s ability to trust his or her method of acquiring true beliefs. Without self-trust one is not able to acquire true beliefs. In Epistemology, there are virtues that limit self-trust, and that enhance self-trust. On virtues that limit self-trust, one is able to listen to positons that challenge his or her beliefs; such as open-mindedness. On virtues that enhance self- trust, one is not willing, for good reason, to listen to others positions that challenge his or her beliefs. The reason that the individual does not want to listen to others position is because they have knowledge that their belief is true, this is also known as intellectual firmness. Throughout my educational experience, I’ve found that I thrive best in the most advanced courses where less time is spent on learning information and more time is spent on discussion. For example, in my IB HL Math course students are encouraged to discover new theorems and tools through teamwork and class discussion rather than just being given these new theorems and tools. This has allowed me to understand calculus on a deeper level and has made it one of my favorite courses. My other classes operate similarly in that students lead the discussion while the teacher observes and occasionally moves the discussion along. Students are encouraged to connect curricula across subjects, such as when we discuss physics in math, human rights in biology, or psychology in literature. The interdisciplinary and challenging courses offered through Stony Brook’s Honors College will allow me to take courses like the ones I’ve

My relatively young age makes me more inclined to to actively gain knowledge as the average life expectancy for humans is currently about 79 years in the US and the more knowledge a person knows the more likely they are to achieve their goals. As a result, until I decide that I am at an age where I won’t need to actively gain knowledge to accomplish my goals, I’m going to actively attain the knowledge that I believe will help me accomplish my goals.

I think the definition of a lifelong learner is this, it is someone who is always willing to learn of new ideas and new information, and will seek out ways of expanding their knowledge, taking all they know and all they have learned and putting it to good use. Students know what they are good at, so they should be given an opportunity to do what they are good. This can only be done by allowing them to choose courses they are good at, and are interested in. Essentially, it is vital that college students should be allowed to choose their courses because; only they know what they are interested in and what they need. Majority of students pay more attention to the subjects they are interested in and this is the reason why, when joining college, they will want to pursue a course in the subjects.
During my time as a student I have been able to develop the way I learn and interact with others to a degree that has also helped me to mature into a better person. I have come to believe that this maturity will help me to develop into a better thinker as well, one that has the patience to listen and take consideration of what others have to say. I consider the act of learning a two way avenue that has to be taken seriously. It is one that involves the teacher, and the protégé. It has been, and will continue to be, my absolute goal as a student to become a diligent protégé and acquire all of learning my teachers have set in front of me. The way each of them have helped me to think about how my actions, and the way I choose to study my lessons and develop as a student, has made a tremendous impact on my life. This impact is one that I will carry into the future as I myself advance in my professional studies.
