Throughout my educational experience, I’ve found that I thrive best in the most advanced courses where less time is spent on learning information and more time is spent on discussion. For example, in my IB HL Math course students are encouraged to discover new theorems and tools through teamwork and class discussion rather than just being given these new theorems and tools. This has allowed me to understand calculus on a deeper level and has made it one of my favorite courses. My other classes operate similarly in that students lead the discussion while the teacher observes and occasionally moves the discussion along. Students are encouraged to connect curricula across subjects, such as when we discuss physics in math, human rights in biology, or psychology in literature. The interdisciplinary and challenging courses offered through Stony Brook’s Honors College will allow me to take courses like the ones I’ve …show more content…
Some would say this is just because they’re the people I have to spend the majority of my time with, but that isn’t true. I love spending time with people who willingly form study groups and have strong interests in academic subjects. Even if I’m just going to Panera to hang out with someone, I usually end up learning something new or teaching. In college, I want to continue to surround myself with the type of people who read about Middle Eastern relations or write computer codes in their free time. Residing in Toscanini College will allow me to continue surrounding myself with fellow lovers of learning both inside and outside of my classes. I’d love to participate in a Pizza and Game Night or see a Broadway show with friends through the unique opportunities the Honors College has to offer. While the Honors College courses will allow me to be intellectually stimulated in school, the social activities offered will allow this intellectual stimulation to extend to the world
Liberty University is my dream school because of its solid Biblical foundation, opportunities for students, and excellent educational program. I have found all three of these qualities in my interaction with the university. I truly sense that Liberty wants what is best for its students both inside and outside of the classroom. In short, Liberty is my dream school because of its heart. The Honors Program at Liberty furthers my respect for Liberty by challenging its students and providing them with opportunities to succeed. Being accepted into the Liberty Honors Program would mean many things to me including preparing me for my future and giving me the chance to become a Champion for Christ. It would challenge and provide me with a close-knit Christian community, new growth opportunities, and a balance amidst the wide variety of new experiences. Being accepted into the Honors Program would further enable me to pursue and fulfill God’s purpose for my life.
The main component I look for in college is their commitment to further my studies. I feel this college will provide an ingenious culture within the science field, therefore rendering myself with the building blocks necessary to later pursue the medical field. Not only does UNCW devote itself towards their student’s undergraduate years, but also by providing Professional pathways such as Pre-Medicine, students such as myself can go into Professional schools better prepared. In addition to my interest in the academics the school has to offer, I also marvel at the amount of extracurricular activities available to the student body. Even though LIU-Post offers an incredible array of clubs and organizations, there has not been one that has caught my eye, solely because of the environment of the campus. Despite my introverted personality, I tend to adapt quicker in an environment where I am surrounded by thousands of people. Imagine a cardiovascular surgeon about to crack the sternum of a dying patient; tension is high while the clock of life ticks desperately slower and softer for the poor soul on the cold steel table that saw death the hour before. Is it logical that at that moment the purveyor of life is contemplating whether his freshmen philosophy class back at SMU has thoroughly prepared him for what he is about to do? Not likely. In higher learning institutions, liberal art classes like philosophy are not meant to be directly applied to one’s life or career; however, they are structured and devised to be a strong base that the individual can expand upon through scientific learning and experience. This is precisely the reason colleges and universities require and place much emphasis on these classes; nevertheless, there has been a shift away from the liberal arts towards the direction of highly specialized areas of science and business because of their growing integration in everyday life. Although people need a limited number of liberal arts classes to attain a basic understanding of ourselves and our evolution, state universities are aptly moving towards technical education, because, in this fast paced world, many people don’t have the time or money to spend studying the humanities alone.
What I like most about being a college student is all the people you get to meet. I have meet a lot of great people over the years that I will continue to be friends with after I graduate. Most of the professor’s that I have had really helped me to become the student I am today.
I want a college life that provides a balance of extracurricular activities that foster relationships and fellowships with persons of various backgrounds from an educational institution that I will want to identify with, commit to, and be loyal to for the rest of my life.
The social experience could be the best time of my life or maybe not the best time of my life. The social experience of college varies with what kind of person I am. I do not think the college experience is for me. I am all about work; however, I also like to play. Although I like to play, I do not like to play as much as college students do. College offers a chance for friendships that could last for a lifetime, but that is not what I am looking for. “This offers a better chance to social involvement and the development of strong friendship bonds” (“What Are the Benefits of College Vs. Technical School?”). Also, college offers me the chance to live on campus which is not for me. I think dorm rooms are too small and if I was to live the sorority life it would distract me from my school life. “Attending college can also provide the opportunity to enjoy a rich social life, since four-year colleges usually require you to live on campus for at least the first two years. To define an ideal Honors Course will help the student get on track with the Honors curriculum. One must first define an honors course for themselves, identify the objectives and to identify the possible outcomes one wishes to achieve. At a community college, extracurricular activities are limited because the student population is smaller and at a larger college such as an university more activities are offered to the students to try to get everyone socially active. Staying socially active is a great way to meet new people and create lasting friendships. American Psychological Association’s Health Psychology journal in June 2014 wrote to Harvard Women’s Health Watch that staying mentally and physically active and having strong social connections can improve your overall health. (qtd .in American Psychological Association). The more activities participated in not only can be beneficial to making new friends but also your health. If attending a community college and not having extracurricular activities around campus how else can one make friends? Community colleges don’t always offer ways to make friends so it leads an individual to go out of their own way to start the process. So when attending a university rather than a community college chances of meeting new people seem to be higher considering the amount of people an individual would be constantly around. Community colleges offer sports but not in the same way universities do. More social events or extracurricular activities students can attend and make new friends is at sporting events. The Honors College at James Madison University offers specific and in-depth mentorship and classes to help the student understand their field of interest by working outside the school environment and working hands- on. The Honors College provides all the resources necessary to assist the students needs through this process. With all that this program is willing to provide, the student must be willing to dedicate themselves to the program. I believe that an important way to be sure of their dedication is through their high school career. An ideal student for this college should be one who has an active history throughout high school. The sense of community established through the Honors College residential dorms would influence me to aid my fellow college students in challenging topics which I may already understand. This would create a sense of communal learning that many colleges lack, due to the competitive nature of the university. In this way, I along with my peers would both be able to reach our academic potential. Additionally, priority that I would obtain for undergraduate research would allow me to not only benefit from an increased understanding of science but would allow me to contribute to the research community. Through a prolonged experience in scientific research from my freshman year onward, I would be able to make many innovative contributions to the research that I would be working on. Furthermore, the Honors College would foster my leadership qualities. As an honors student, I would be among others who are as academically talented as I am. Being constantly surrounded by those of similar academic talent would push me to be a leader to those who may be struggling in the collegiate environment. I would be able to do this through either creating or joining a student run tutoring service that would allow me to tutor struggling students in a subject that I had already successfully
In college, I will also be exposed to new clubs and activities. I feel that club and after school activities can make a person more involved and give a person the right qualities to become a leader. Involvement in extra events has provided a balance for rigorous course study. With the pressures that college brings, I will probably want to be involved in many groups.
The most fulfilling or rewarding experience I have had as a college student here at USC has simply been having the opportunity to be surrounded by motivated students, professors, and advisors that have encouraged me to expand my horizons and better myself. Without the Honors College, I would have never met and bonded with my current roommates or any of my other college friends, who push me to try new things and work harder every day. In today’s modern time, college and universities are competitive and impacted; a lot of students work hard and compete to attend the best. Nowadays, high GPA and grades are not the only important factor that college and universities look for, but being an all-around student who is involved with volunteer work, campus clubs, and sports. Many students take the easy route and turn to clubs or bigger social organizations such as the Greek life. Unlike the average clubs or student organizations participating in a fraternity and sorority is a lifetime affiliation and students are only allowed to be committed to one. These social/cultural groups are filled with members who share similar values and interests that can also offer a college life experience, good or bad.
