How are people incapable of carrying on a conversation with others but know all of their times tables at seven? The idea of someone being so imbalanced with intelligence and social skills seems really absurd. For example children with autism tend to be very smart but have hard times being social. Does being book smart or socially savvy make one more successful? Intelligence can be split into two major forms: cognitive and emotional. Emotional intelligence predicts how successful in life someone will be. Cognitive Intelligence can be defined as “academically smart”, according to Mayer and Salovey (1997). is very much so a product of nature and nurture, just because one is academically smart does not guarantee their success in life. Barack Obama has an average IQ but he worked hard to become President. People have to be able to connect with others in order to network and maintain normal relationships. In addition, networking opens up a field of opportunities, allowing one to be more successful in life. Emotional intelligence is so important for jobs according to Keld Jenson who writes, “Research carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of your financial success is due to skills in ‘human engineering,’ your personality and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Shockingly, only 15 percent is due to technical knowledge ” (2012). Also, Steve cooper states in an article (2013) that “a national insurance company found that sales agents who were weak in emotional competencies such as self-confidence, initiative, and empathy sold policies with an average premium of $54,000. Not bad, right? Well, compared to agents who scored high in a majority of emotional competencies, they sold policies worth an average of $114,000" (2013). It is not what you know rather who know and how well you can communicate. Just because a person has a high iq does not mean they will be unsuccessful. Not all highly intelligent individuals are socially inept. On the other hand, just because an individual does not have a high eq does not mean they cannot improve, particularly children, they sell toys to improve children’s eq’s.
Our society has always had an obsession with labels whether in the form of fashion, our description of personal relationships, or the way we see ourselves as individuals. Labels never escape us. Therefore, if we are going to be labeled by our peers, is it better to be labeled "book smart" or "street smart"? What about in the world of academics? Should students be supported by schools and teachers to allow street smarts to be used in an academic environment? While some schools are likely to be against allowing students to use what they know to read, write, and think critically, many students and teachers, myself included, judge these techniques of teaching to be helpful to students.
Howard Gardner used to define intelligence as “the ability to solve problems or to create products that are valued within one or more cultural settings” (Gardner 33). The modern day human being would most likely include the words “smart” and “dumb” in their definition of intelligence. Gardner questioned the belief of only one intelligence so he created his own theory that involved seven different discoveries. He didn’t want to call these discoveries “skills” or “talents” or gifts” because those all suggested a drawback so he decided on the word “intelligence,” creating his theory of multiple intelligences (Gardner 33). Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences including, linguistic, logical/mathematical, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, spatial, intrapersonal and interpersonal, has many implications for modern education and culture.
The Bell Curve is a book originally published in 1994. It was written by Richard Herrnstein and Charles Murray to explain the variations of intelligence in American Society. They accomplished this by using statistical analysis, for the purpose of raising warnings regarding the consequences of the intelligence gap. This was also made to propose a national social policy with the goal of mitigating bad consequences that have been attributed to this intelligence gap. Much of the information is widely considered controversial. An example of this is the low African-American scores compared to whites and Asians, and genetic factors in intelligence abilities. This paper aims to examine a particular assessment tool, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Scales (Fifth Edition), which measures both intelligence and cognitive abilities (Roid, 2003). This assessment is usually administered by psychologists and the scores are most often used to determine placement in academics and services allotted to children and adolescents (despite their compatibility for adults) (Wilson & Gilmore, 2012). Furthermore before the investigation dives into the particulars of the test, such as its strengths and weakness’, it is best to first learn more about the intelligence scales general characteristics.
Everyone has an opinion concerning what type of education is most useful. We all know that a college education is important in the competitive world we live in today. For instance, if you want a career in engineering, medicine, chemistry or law, a bachelor's degree or higher is mandatory. We often see people who have made it really big, and yet have little or no formal education. My opinion is, in order to get and keep a good paying job, you need both “street smarts” and “book smarts.” The combination of practical knowledge and explicit knowledge is the key to a successful career. Both types of knowledge have distinct advantages.
On the ‘nature’ side of the debate is the psychometric approach, considered to be the most dominant in the study of intelligence, which “inspired the most research and attracted the most attention” (Neisser et al. 1996, p. 77). It argues that there is one general (‘g’) factor which accounts for intelligence. In the 1880s, Francis Galton conducted many tests (measuring reaction times to cognitive tasks), (Boundless 2013), in order to scientifically measure intelligence. These tests were linked to the eugenic breeding programme, which aimed to eliminate biologically inferior people from society. Galton believed that as intelligence was inherited, social class or position were significant indicators of intelligence. If an individual was of high social standing, they would be more intelligent than those of a lower position. However he failed to show any consistency across the tests for this hypothesis, weakening his theory that social class correlated with intelligence. L. L. Thurston’s theory of intelligence identifies seven recognizable intellectual abilities: spatial ability, memory, perceptual speed, word fluency, numerical ability, reasoning, and verbal meaning. Thurman argued multiple factors go into making up intelligence and although there may be some correlation between mental abilities, each ability is relatively independent of each other. A person having remarkable spatial ability or the ability to rotate an object and estimate horizontal and vertical dimensions might be deficient in word fluency or the ability to generate words rapidly.
Some experts believe that our Emotional Intelligence Quotient is more important that are basic Intelligence Quotient. Some researchers believe that individuals are born with their attributes of Emotional Intelligence, yet others believe Emotional Intelligence can be learned and strengthened. Since 1990, Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer have led research efforts on the theory of Emotional Intelligence. In their article titled “The Intelligence of Emotional Intelligence,” they claim that Emotional Intelligence is “the subset of social intelligence that involves the ability to monitor one’s own and other’s feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions.” This definition has led Salovey and Mayer to propose a model identifying four different factors of Emotional Intelligence within an individual.
