To me, diversity is who you are and where you come from. Diversity is what makes you, you. Furthermore, it is my contribution to any community that I find myself in. I know that I will always bring something different to the environment especially since I was born in a West African country called Nigeria. When I was 5 years old, I embarked on a journey to the United States of America. When I boarded the plane in Nigeria, I saw many people who fit my description. I saw ladies that shared my tightly coiled hair, my skin that was as brown as coffee after adding three shots of cream, and my small chocolate chip eyes. Once the eighteen-hour flight was completed and we got off of the plane in Port Columbus, I was amazed at the spectacle in front
of me. There were so much variety and diversity in this large space. I heard people speaking different languages and everyone was a different size, shape, color, and ethnicity. There were women with straight, curly, and coarse hair. I instantly knew that I would love it here. As I grew up in this country, I made it my priority to never lose sight of my beautiful culture. When I am among my group of closest friends, I would take every opportunity to introduce them to my culture, by telling them about different genres of music that I enjoy listening to, the delicious foods that I eat, and the way Nigerians dress and dance. Diversity to me is not only how people add variety to a group, but it is also how people take in the diverseness of other people. If people are not open-minded to other people's cultures, then that means that they themselves lack diversity. Being diverse to me is not only physical appearances, but how diverse our minds, spirits, and souls are. When I attend Miami, I hope to be unapologetically me. I would love to join the choir or theater in Miami. I want to join many clubs to keep myself involved with the school anyway possible. I just hope my presence at the school can add more value so I can leave a good and promising impact on the school. I do not want to just be part of the diversity at Miami University, I want to help define Diversity at Miami.
When people hear the word 'diversity', they often think in terms of black and white. I believe the true meaning of diversity is not simply about skin color, economic background or the face value of any other characteristic, rather it is the increased knowledge and sensitivity gained from unique experiences. The strength of diversity then comes from having many points of view and trying to reconcile them by finding common truths or resolving differences amongst people. Being a person of mixed heritage, my father is black and my mother is white, has definitely affected my life and contributed to the development of qualities that enhance my ability to embrace the uniqueness of those around me. Being raised in a single parent household and the values passed on to me by my mother have also been strong influences in my life. My greatest contribution to my community is the ability to create relationships between people of diverse backgrounds and a desire to understand others' beliefs.
As George Bernard Shaw declared, “We learn from history that we learn nothing from history.” Specifically, the United States incessantly falls back into the routine of allowing the gap between the rich and the poor to expand. Diversity is one thing, I have come to accept and appreciate greatly in my life. I am 22 years old and was born in Ghana, West Africa. To me, I see myself as an African woman. Reasoning being that both my parents are Africans but from different tribes. I was brought up through the general Ghanaian way, but having my parents from different ethnic groups taught me how to adapt to different cultures and I believe that was where my experience with diversity began. It involves recognizing the worth of differences, promoting inclusiveness and combating or uprooting discrimination. There are over 7 Billion people in the world. Each Person is different; they have something different from everyone. In this world you can find things that you can never imagine exist. Also Crazy things people can do that you think it’s not possible. All around the world there are exotic, unimaginable, scary, intriguing things and people we will soon come to meet.
When America was founded, it was established on freedom and equality for all people, at first religious freedom, but eventually freedom of speech, press, petition, and more. In time, America began to be known as a “melting pot” of cultures as more and more people came because they wanted this freedom; the more people who came though, the more problems America had. There are many definitions relating to diversity, equity and inclusion that and sometimes the terms used interchangeably. Definitions that are helpful in understand the concepts are as follows. The protected characteristics under law are disability, race, gender discrimination, civil partnership, marriage, pregnancy and maternity, belief and religion, age and sexual orientation (CIPD, 2013).
The issue of managing diversity in the workplace is relevant, interesting, fresh and useful. Managing diversity focuses on maximizing the ability of all employees to contribute to organizational goals. Affirmatives action refers to actions required to defeat the effects of past discrimination, or other barriers to equal work opportunity. The shift from a manufacturing to a service economy, the globalization of markets, new business scheme with more teamwork, work together with different corporate cultures of mergers and alliances and changing labor market are the five reasons why diversity has become a dominant activity in managing an organizations human resources.
