Distractions are a part of everyday life and effects everyone in some kind of way. Distractions in undergraduate students’ lives can affect how they can study and their academic performance. Some distractions could be the environment (whether or not someone is in a quiet environment versus a loud environment). An example of this would be if a student is studying at the library versus studying in a crowded cafeteria. Distractions could include technology. Technology could be branched into whether or not a student’s notes are taken on the computer or if they are handwritten. If the student is using their computer when studying or doing classwork are they only on the topic on hand or are they doing something else. This is where social media comes …show more content…
Multi-tasking could be another distraction because the student is not focused on one thing entirely. Whether or not a student decides to study by themselves or in a study group could affect them. Sleep could be another factor. Whether a student has had enough sleep before a class or a big test could affect the grade that they get. Most literature focuses on cell phone use and how this effects students. A study showed that when students used their phones to text in class had a negative impact on their GPA. This study was done by using behavioral observations (Harman & Sato, 2011). David et. al did a study on multitasking and studying and found that checking social media and texting were a distraction with students. This study was done by using a survey. The survey asked students multiple questions on length of time using their cell phones while they were supposed to be studying (David et al., …show more content…
One study showed that teachers and students that were in Romania, China, and Poland thought that social media could enhance learning. Students there only used social media when a teacher suggested it (Kot, Tan, & Dragolea, 2017). This study could have different results in the United States and if they had used undergraduate students in their study. Another study showed how Facebook did help students self-confidence. This study used a survey that asked a variety of questions. Some of the questions asked were what which social media apps were used and how they were used. Researchers found that students felt more confident when their peers commented positive things under a picture. They also found that students didn’t pay much attention to negative comments if there were any (Kaya & Bicen, 2016). This study did not focus on how social media could affect their academic
Michael Rubinkam’s “Texting in class is Rampant” brings awareness to the fact that most students use their phones during a lecture to text. Many professors are starting to notice it and some have even gone to extremes by having punishments if they see a phone out. Michael Rubinkam conducted a number of surveys with students who attend Wilkes University to see how many students actually use their phones during class. The author also discusses with some professors at the university to see their opinion on how phone use in class can impact the student’s education and how it impacts them as well. There is no doubt that texting is a habit most high school and college students face. It’s our primary way of communication with people. We get so addicted to texting people considering it only takes a few seconds to reply, but with that being said does it interfere with our school life too? Sitting in a lecture and pulling your phone out can be distracting because you’re not paying attention to the professor and the skills they’re teaching you’re practically in your own world at that point. Is the excessive use of texting in class-harming student’s education? The author
“There are almost 180 million cell phone users and it is rapidly expanding” (Betancourt). Nearly every student in the United States owns a cell phone. Cell phones have been around for forty years. The first cell phone was placed by Martin Cooper in 1973. Cell phones become increasingly popular as the twenty-first century technology becomes more advance. People in younger generation rely on cell phone to accomplish basic needs. Some even becomes addictive to the cell phone. For example, I have a cousin who considers cell phone as an important part of her daily life. If I ask her to put away her cell phone, she would complain “I can’t live without my cell phone.” Cell phone should be prevented from using excessively because if cell phone is used in an improper way, it would ultimately becomes a distraction device for students. Therefore, students would be lack in interpersonal relationship, distracted during class, which can lead to academic failure, and distracted while driving, which can lead to serious accident and death. The negative impacts of cell phone on students are significant matters that need to be addressed.
An instance where social media and technology might cause more problems than offer benefits is the school environment. Technology then becomes a very big issue if used incorrectly in the classroom. Ritchel states,”Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave. They say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information. These play to a primitive impulse to respond to immediate opportunities and threats.”
Now, social media isn’t all bad. Still, people say that social media can help build confidence. For instance, 1 in 5 teens with a social media account have reported that it makes them feel more confident. So teens can be positively affected by social media. Furthermore, 28% of people say that social media makes them feel more outgoing, while only 5% says it makes them feel less so. Also, 29% of teens on social media say it makes them feel less shy, but only 3% says otherwise. On balance, many say that there are just as many benefits, if not more, in social
Teachers are finding it harder and harder to separate a student from their cell phones for eight hours. Cellular devices and social media have become a number one priority for many people across the world. Due to the fact that the student will not put down their phones during school hours, their grades tend to be lower, which could, in the long run, affect their chances of getting into college. The use of cell phones does not strictly affect younger generations, it also had major influence on adults at the
This letter seeks to give an overview of the problem of time management among college students who are the target audience in this paper. The paper also highlights on the probable solutions ascribed to it. It also seeks to identify a simple three part model that capsulate a viable solution to this problem if followed to the latter.
Purpose of Study Individuals should understand that the use or nonuse of social media has negative and positive effects on their lives, whether they recognize them or not. Students who excessively use social networking applications can be negatively affected because they are spending too much time on these applications rather than paying attention in class, completing homework, studying, sleeping, or focusing on their own health and condition. However, these same students who are excessive users are often times the students who are more aware of global issues and updates in pop culture through the use of social media. Students who moderately use social networking applications spend a good amount of time on these applications and are still able to manage time for sleeping, practicing good eating habits, homework, and studying. These students are usually just as aware, or slightly less aware, than students who excessively use social networking.
Abstract Outside distractions are a major issue with students. They negatively impact student learning and motivation if not handled correctly. Students often get distracted by extracurricular activities, the opposite sex, home life, etc. The common core program is to blame for some of this, but it can normally be combatted with a reasonable workload, and a reasonable due date (with reminders). It is also important to emphasis the course’s importance and have them take responsibility for any subpar work.
The 19th Century was classified as a time of momentous change, political empires broke up, nationalism arose, the power of the middle class replaced that of the aristocracy, and colonialism flourished. It was during this time that some of the most renowned works were published such as Frankenstein by Mary Shelly and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Writers grew board with the common techniques of writing from the previous era, and began to branch out to new styles of writing such as “realism” and “romanticism.” While realism was meant to express mundane life as it actually was, romanticism focused more on expression like imaginations and emotions. Although popular with some writers, the public mocked these philosophies of writing.
Exposing students to the power of social media in the classroom is an important part of preparing them to be active and positive digital citizens in a 21st century world. In the last two years, my own students have rapidly been drawn to Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, and many other social networking platforms. They upload, share, and connect with others often without any regard to how their digital footprints may reflect them as individuals. Having continuous conversations with students about the choices that they make can lead to positive results. Students don't realize how powerful social media platforms can be in terms of networking, researching, and engaging in academic conversations. It makes me laugh every time I hear them whisper about my colleague Heather's or my Twitter feed. First of all kids, I can hear you. Second of all, yes, social media can be an amazing way to give and exchanged knowledge.
In the age that we live in, social media has intergraded with college student’s daily lives and how much time is spent on social media. Social media is neither inherently bad nor good it all depends on how it is being used. “Social media are increasingly mobile, smartphones and tablets give users instant and around the clock access to social media and other web functions.” (Martinez-Aleman) When college students access sites on social media like Twitter or Facebook and get side tracked then social media is bad because it effects their education. However, when it is being used to communicate with their peers or professors then social media is a tool of good. Some researchers believe that the social media helps college
To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework. Doing work and using a social media at the same is a huge distraction. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 and students who used social networking si...
A distraction is a task that prevents someone from giving their full attention to the task they were given. There has been an increase in the use of technology around the world and there are new technology advances made everyday. Technology has many uses like watching videos, getting into contact with your friends, and being able to contact family that live far away. Technology is even becoming more predominant in classrooms to prepare students for the future of the 21st century. Technology is distracting because of texting, social media sites, and being able to cheat by looking answers up on the internet.
Students involved in activities on social media sites during the study resulted in a reduction in their focus of attention. This causes a decrease in their academic performance, and concentration to learn as well.
Masuma Ahuja, journalist from the Washington Post, said “Teens today, also known as the Facebook Generation or ‘digital natives,’ are part of the first U.S. generation to be so closely identified with technology (Ahuja 3).” Many people believe that social media tends to distract students. With the increasing technological advances, students are encouraged and even required to take part in social media. Social media is a part almost many aspects of a teens life. Social media applications such as Instagram, twitter, snap chat, Facebook, vine, and many more are changing the way teens are interacting which can result in academic struggles. Social media is having a negative affect on students by distracting them from their work and prohibiting them from using their full potential in the classroom and at home.
