Have you ever considered how much time you spend surfing the web or staring at a screen? Although it might not have crossed your mind when you're sitting down watching TV, the effects certainly take a toll, even if you don't notice it. Shut Down Your Screen Week is a current movement that is sweeping the nation by challenging students to stay away from technology for a week. This movement is helping students notice how much their weekly screen time is holding them back. If our school participates in this national movement, we could start to see improvement in student grades, behavioral development, and even see students have less stress and more time to be free and enjoy other hobbies at home. What some don’t know is that social media also serves as a very good distraction. This is not always a bad thing. Sometimes you might come home after a long day and will need a distraction and destress. This is one of the benefits of social media. It eases the weight of having to think and allows you to be entertained without having to use so much brain power. An instance where social media and technology might cause more problems than offer benefits is the school environment. Technology then becomes a very big issue if used incorrectly in the classroom. Ritchel states,”Scientists say juggling e-mail, phone calls and other incoming information can change how people think and behave. They say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information. These play to a primitive impulse to respond to immediate opportunities and threats.” This kind of distraction presents a great threat to the focus and performance of students in the classroom. If we can eliminate this threat from the classroom for a week, we could see students be more focused and attentive.
