Introduction This essay will explore the early adulthood age period, which is the period between 20 and 40 years of age (years vary across different theories). This exploration will consist of looking, first, at the typical physical, cognitive, and psychosocial (separated into personal and social) developmental milestones of early adulthood, then analysinghow the home and educational/vocational environment influences development in early adulthood, and finally describing depression and the effects of depression on development during early adulthood. Typical Developmental Milestones During Early Adulthood During the age period of early adulthood (20 – 40 years) the human body and mind continues to develop and change (Sigelman, Rider, & George-Walker, 2013). These changes occur in a number of different ways in the physical, cognitive, and psychosocial, which will be split into personal and social, areas of human development. These are summarised in a comprehensive table found in Life Span Human Development (Appendix A) (Sigelman, Rider, & George-Walker, 2013). Physical Development Physically early adulthood does not boast substantial visible changes, however there are changes occurring. During the early adulthood developmental stage the physical development and maturation of the human body is complete, and brain waves show a more mature pattern to the thought, decision making, and general everyday operations. Early adulthood also shows a peak in the senses and physical capabilities of the human body (Unknown, 2007).
