Devastating Knee Injury

I thought I was invincible. I tried to be the best on the team, I worked hard

and everything fell into place, that is, until my junior year.

The basketball season was going well. Christmas break was coming up and after

it, we would start our league games. Our first league game was Paonia, our

biggest rivals yet to step into Delta County. The game started off intense.

One minute and 30 seconds into the game, Paonia fouled, so we lined up for the

free throw. I stood there, looking at the clock thinking, "I've got plenty of

time." We made the free throws. Paonia inbound the ball, took it up the court,

scored, turned around and pressed us. I broke out for the ball and caught it,

started to turn to burn the defense, but instead, I heard a snap, followed by a

pop, and I was down, right in front of our home stands. The pain was in my knee.

Before I knew what had happened, Mrs. Carson was at my side holding my hand.

With a thorough check up of twists, bends, flexion, and extensions, I was hit

with frightful news. I wasn't going to be playing the next game because of a

speculated ACL tear, along with who knows what else. "What!?" I thought to

myself, "No, not me, this can't be happening."

I wanted to play, no matter what I had to do; I was going to play another game.

I was very ignorant because I did not want to face the fact that I was injured.

Therefore, I decided that my knee was fine and I was going to finish out the

season. So I slapped on a knee brace and had plans to play my first returning

game against Aspen. For further reference, the ACL is the tendon that holds the

thighbone from going over the calf bone. With 3 minutes to go in the 4th

quarter, I remember jogging d...

... middle of paper ...

...ket and blizzard and we headed

home.

When we arrived home, I ended up in my bedroom; I don't remember the trip from

the suburban to my room again. I literally crawled into bed, looked around and

saw millions of flowers all over my room along with balloons.

Then next week I only got more and more flowers, and tons of visitors. My mom

had to wait on me hand and foot because I was not to get out of bed except in

emergency situations, like going to the bathroom. I was helpless with a bum

knee.

I missed out on the 2002 track season and I couldn't participate in any sport

over the summer. I had a hard time realizing the fact that I wasn't part of a

team. My friends and family helped me get through the school year, I couldn't

have done it without them, but it was the most miserable time of my life.
