Derk Backderf depended almost entirely on visual narrative and culture, which is anything where meaning is sought through images, to tell his story in his graphic novel My Friend Dahmer. He used words to tell his story, but he let the graphics speak to the emotions of the issues. He used the idea that a picture is worth a thousand words to help him inform and warn other people. His pictures depicted someone who looked fairly normal on the outside, but on the inside he was a monster who was trying to fight his inner demons through the abuse of alcohol.
I thought it was interesting that throughout the whole novel, the background color was white with black pictures and then at the end when Dahmer gave in to his temptations and killed his first

Rumors were a huge problem with this school shooting because the media was so desperate to find a reason for their actions, and they were so desperate for information that they would interview any student that they could find, even if the student could only give them third hand knowledge. I remember being taught in school a lot of the rumors about the Columbine shooting that this book disproves, such as the two shooters were bullied really badly and they came to school with guns as payback. This book honestly changed the way that I, and I’m guessing many other people, viewed the attack and the perpetrators. Another purpose of the book is to search for an actual explanation to killers’ actions after all of the rumors are dispelled. When something terrible happens, it seems like people need to find a reason for it. They can’t accept that a normal person would be capable of something so terrible, and if they can find an explanation, them maybe such a terrible act can be prevented in the
I chose to read this book due to wanting to learn more information, and learn the hard facts and truth of this horrid massacre. Eighteen year old Eric Harris and seventeen year old Dylan Klebold were two boys with a fascination of violent video games and music. These young men were known to be “goth” and were bullied all throughout their high school careers because of their different interest. In 1999, on April 20th these boys went into their high school with mixed emotions and a devious plan to get revenge. The two teens went into the high school with handguns and killed both students and faculty members, before they turned the guns around on themselves. This is a reliable source because it informed us of both previous emotion, and the aftermath of the tragedy with detail about the boys, the school and the lives affected. This source was relevant for me because of how thoroughly it described the shooting, and gave me background information as to why and how it happened.
“ The horizon was the color of milk. Cold and fresh. Poured out among the bodies” (Zusak 175). The device is used in the evidence of the quote by using descriptives words that create a mental image. The text gives the reader that opportunity to use their senses when reading the story. “Somehow, between the sadness and loss, Max Vandenburg, who was now a teenager with hard hands, blackened eyes, and a sore tooth, was also a little disappointed” (Zusak 188). This quote demonstrates how the author uses descriptive words to create a mental image which gives the text more of an appeal to the reader's sense such as vision. “She could see his face now, in the tired light. His mouth was open and his skin was the color of eggshells. Whisker coated his jaw and chin, and his ears were hard and flat. He had a small but misshapen nose” (Zusak 201). The quotes allows the reader to visualize what the characters facial features looked like through the use of descriptive words. Imagery helps bring the story to life and to make the text more exciting. The reader's senses can be used to determine the observations that the author is making about its characters. The literary device changes the text by letting the reader interact with the text by using their observation skills. Imagery is used by many authors as a crucial element of character development. These authors draw parallels between the imagery in their stories and the main characters' thoughts and feelings. Through intense imagery, non-human elements such as the natural environment, animals, and inanimate objects are brought to life with characteristics that match those of the characters involved.
Well they are not hard to find in Wheelers essay he uses several facts to show that schools have been shooters primary targets. Whether the shooter is affiliated with them or not. All shooters want is somewhere they can find essay targets, unarmed student, young children, weaponless teachers. Several school shootings are given in Wheeler’s essay. Wheeler mentions that in April of 2007, thirty – two people were murdered at Virginia Tech. This was not the only shooting wheeler mentions that took place in a school. Buford Furrow’s murderous invasion in August of 1999, took place are the Los Angeles Jewish day-care. Wheeler introduces cases where guns became the hero in what could have ended like many other school shootings do. In 2002, a homicidal Virginia student was stopped for shooting more of his classmates when another student held him at gunpoint. At the Pearl High School, Luke Woodham was stopped, when the schools vice principal, Joel Myrick got his colt .45 out of his truck and pointed it at the young killer. Wheeler states that we had the opportunity to protect our schools when House Bill 1572 was introduced into the legislature. The bill would allow all concealed-carry provisions to be extended onto college campuses. Unfortunately, the bill was denied wheeler says, by a bunch of naysayers, this included the Virginia Tech itself. This just shows that we as citizens had the chance to protect not only ourselves, but our children and we just denied it.

A Good Man is Hard to Find and Revelation, both have incredible usage of imagery and describes the characters very well. For example, in A Good Man is Hard to Find Flannery writes “ the grandmother had on a navy blue straw sailor at with a bunch of print. Her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet. In case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady” (O'Connor, 421). This excerpt from the book shows just how important painting a picture of the characters are to O'Connor. April 20th, 1999, Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, experienced a mass shooting. Thirteen people were injured and more than twenty were injured. Twelve were students and one was a teacher. Two students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire on their high school for forty one minutes before turning their guns on themselves and committing suicide. School shootings are notorious for making headline news but in 1999, school shooting were not as prevalent as they are in the present day. Unlike most of the country, I knew about Columbine High School on April 19, 1999. I knew that the Columbine Rebels had a good football team, I remembered how they beat Cherry Creek for the 1999 football championship. I knew what Columbine's building was like from when I was inside it in January for a debate tournament. I had friends that went to CHS. We had gone on a trip to Hawaii together to learn about biology. The rest of the country found out about Columbine High School on April 20, 1999. They didn't hear about their football team, the debate tournament they hosted, or my friends, though; they heard about two angry students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, that went on a killing rampage killing 12 other students, a teacher, and themselves. The nation, the media, the killers, my friends, and me all have their own view of what happened that day. Many people tried to understand how something so terrible could happen, while the killers thought that the killings were a wonderful thing, and still other students were trying to comprehend that this tragedy had actually happened so close to home.
When writing any sort of narrative, be it novel or poem, fiction or non-fiction, scholarly or frivolous, an author must take into account the most effective manner in which to effectively convey the message to their audience. Choosing the wrong form, or method of speaking to the reader, could lead to a drastic misunderstanding of the meaning within an author’s content, or what precisely the author wants to say (Baldick 69). Even though there are quite a bit fewer words in a graphic novel than in the average novel, an author can convey just as much content and meaning through their images as they could through 60,000 words. In order to do that though, their usage of form must be thoughtfully considered and controlled. Marjane Satrapi, author of the graphic memoir The Complete Persepolis, took great pains in the creation of her panels in order to reinforce and emphasize her narrative, much like a novelist utilizes punctuation and paragraph breaks. Through her portrayal of darkness and lightness, Satrapi demonstrates that literary content influences, and is primary to, the form.
The news of Columbine was all over the TV, newspapers, and in every social aspect of life. This left parents no choice but to discuss the incident with their children. After Columbine, there seemed to be more and more reports of school violence, more shooting, bombings, and knives being brought to school. As much as parents would like to protect their kids from hearing any of this they can't and the kids come home with questions. Kids are now scared to go to school and their parents are scared to let them. Authors of every genre use images in their works to stand in as metaphors, similes, and more often as simple descriptions. Kate Chopin is very well known for her use of images in her writing. Kate Chopin uses imagery in her stories to build the characters and provide metaphors for their lives.
The use of multiple images to propel a narrative allows the audience to learn something through the characters that are there. Bloomer (1990)’s study on visual perception also draws upon Newton (1998)’s concern, as he explores the multiple perspectives and views of the event. By using a series of images, the characters mood and tone can be established throughout different elements of what we see. This may be the people, the place itself or the items within the place. By having a narrative of photographs, the audience has an even deeper understanding of the reality of that moment or event as they see more than just the ‘big picture’ as
