Social Media and its Effects on One’s Mental Health According to Tufts University social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks (www.tufts.edu). Current research indicates that there is a connection between increased social media use and deteriorated mental health. Unfortunately, young adults, the most active social media users, have a predominantly high risk for developing mental health issues, making this connection particularly concerning. A survey revealed that “two thirds of participants reported difficulty relaxing and sleeping after they used the sites, while 55% said they felt ‘worried or uncomfortable’ when they were unable to log onto their social media accounts” (Whiteman, pg.2). I interviewed five people and they all informed that they go to bed with their phones right next to them. In today 's modern society, 72% of adults spend their time in bed before falling asleep updating or checking their friends status updates on Facebook (BEDTIME SOCIAL NETWORKING CAUSES SLEEP DEPRIVATION EPIDEMIC ACROSS BRITAIN). These statistics are often offered as evidence that adolescents ' social habits and school schedules are cutting into needed sleep time. Being exposed to bright light from computer and mobile phone screens while in bed completely delays the brain and body 's ability to get to sleep. The act of this behavior makes people unable to get to sleep as quickly as they should and aren 't getting the required amount of sleep they need each night. A connection between sleep and mental health is well documented. It has been shown that people who suffer from anxiety tend to spend less time in deep sleep than those without anxiety (Sleep and Mental Health). Social Media has brought on an epidemic of sleep deprivation to people of all ages. All through the night they wake with the “beeps” and “dings” of new messages. They have been craving the sound of a new message and when it comes, no matter what time of the day (or night), they are quick in responding to whatever and whoever the message may be about. This addiction has been kept in-check but with the cost of a good night’s sleep. Today’s generation has been leaving the thought of sleep behind only to lose valuable relaxation time. Many people “…text, tweet, check messages, and post things right before sleeping” (Addiction). This had been proven to “…reduce melatonin in the brain” (Addiction) thus taking away minute by minute of our precious sleep. We put our phones down when we think necessary and go to sleep only to be awaken again within the next half-an-hour. The fact that we keep our devices on through the night does not help our case.

The study had 1,800 men and women ages range between 19 to 32 years old participated. The main question for this finding was, is greater involvement of social media linked to depression or is it depressed people who are drag to social media? Dr. Brian Patrick have suggested three types of results which are expected from the study one of the strongest possibilities is that people who have depressive symptoms tend to use social media more often because they don’t feel the energy to engage with new people. I never thought I would be the one to turn to social media to escape my reality, but I have come to realise how bad I am at it. At family functions when I feel uncomfortable, I reach for my phone. Even at times when my homework should be my priority I turn to my phone for a quick distraction to side track my mind with the reality that my homework is due in half an hour. Social media distracts me and many teens from reality by influencing us with all these expectations. Teenagers spoke about the pressure they felt to make themselves available 24/7, and the resulting anxiety if they did not respond immediately to texts or posts. Impact of Technology on Mental Health Many critics of digital mental health have constantly argued on the adverse effects of technology on mental health.
