Dance, it has a different meaning for each and every person. I realize now that there is not just one answer to the question,” What is dance?” To some it’s a cultural ritual, to others it’s a way of expression, a way to let go of feelings that have been bottled up inside for much too long. After this week, dance has a new meaning in my life. Dance to me is any movement that has a surreal impact on my thoughts, my body, or my spirit at that given moment, whether it be the fall leaves blowing in the wind, or the annoying shriek of my boyfriend’s alarm in the mornings or even simply watching shadows dance on the wall at the end of a long day. Dance isn’t just about how you’re moving while the music is playing, it’s what’s impacting you when the music is no longer there. …show more content…
People always say it’s the little things that matter, and boy if that isn’t the truth I don’t know what is.
What I used to consider as an extracurricular activity, is a way of everyday life. When most people think of dance they think of going out to clubs or they think of swaying their bodies to the beat of the music, or they think they can learn about it in the books. Dance is not something that can be learned from a textbook; it is gained through your everyday experience and struggles It is gained from years of observing your surroundings and others . It is the passion that flows through your veins when you dance in the kitchen, it is the thankfulness you feel when you wake up to another day, and it is the sadness you feel when you see a flag drifting in the wind. Dance is almost like one big obstacle course if you think about it, you navigate your body in and out through the loops and challenges, you trust your gut instinct, and you let it possess your feelings and your soul and in the end you could still end up at a dead end. I have learned to relate dance to everyday events and through dance I let trust, commitment and passion flow through my body through simple everyday observations and
movements. This assignment has made me think twice about the meaning of all these small movements in my life. What would happen if there wasn’t an annoying, shrieking alarm around to wake me up in the mornings? Where would I be if I didn’t have my sweet kitchen dances with my significant other? What would you do if you never got to experience a cool fall breeze again? I know I wouldn’t’ be half the person I am today and taking the time this week to appreciate the smaller things about the dance world showed me that. I have experienced forms of peace, and happiness, along with irritability and many others but in the end I’m still happy, why? Because no dance can just make you feel one certain mood, it’ll make you feel a lot of different ways in just one small movement, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. The different forms of dance I have experienced throughout the week have brought peace to my body, mind and soul. It gives me and many others the courage to face everyday challenges, no matter how difficult they are. I have learned that dance is more beautiful than any words that could be used to even come close to describing it, and it will continue to impact the world around us, whether it be through nature, television, newspaper, or music itself.
Irish dance is known all around the world for its music, style, and costumes. What once started as a cultural folkloric dance has now turned into a worldwide phenomenon because of many contextual factors on the three defining characteristics. In this paper I will attempt to show how the Gaelic League, An Coimisiún, and Riverdance influenced and changed the posture, movement, and appearance of the dance form. The story of Irish dance thus far is one of a constant changing dance that reflects the influences around it. Each of the changes in the style, costuming, and meaning of the dance has molded it into the globally accepted and loved dance form seen today.
Ballet is a popular dance form that originated in the 1500s around the time of the renaissance. It consists of many different forms that have evolved over the years. Ever since I was young I have always loved to dance. Dance is a very social activity that also requires physical strength and endurance. I always feel happier when I dance because it’s a great way to boost endorphins and lower stress levels. Dance has also enabled me to grow as a person both physically and emotionally. I have been dancing competitively for six years now. Throughout those years I have had amazing opportunities to meet so many inspiring people and make lifelong friends. One of my favorite parts of dance is definitely being part of a team and going to competitions, it’s so much fun! At competitions, I always get the feeling that all of my hard work has paid off. Even though it is a competition the atmosphere is still outstanding as I am surrounded by enthusiastic people who all love the same things as me.
As an athlete who spends countless hours practicing, building strength, working with my teammates, listening to feedback from my coach and refining my skills it is very frustrating when people say that dance is not a sport. I am a member of the Palm Desert High School Competition Dance Team. The Google search engine defines sport as: an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. Based on this definition and the examples elaborated on in this essay, competitive dance must be recognized as a sport.

Choreographers define dance as “telling a story without speaking”, “the language of the body”, “explaining your heart through movement”, and “is a unique passion that ca be fulfilling to its choreographers, dancers, and audience” (Senior Mastery Choreography Survey). The responses to the Senior Mastery Choreographer Survey proves that the stimulating and creating process of the choreography in the brain is the difficult aspect of this job, but when the visions are transferred to the dancers the results can be tremendous and sometimes breathtaking. The choreography can be created by the use of shapes, kinesthetic and scenic spacing, timing, and different tactics to leave a meaning to the audience. Choreography and dance have been a part of the arts for a myriad of years and will be for numerous more. My most favorite activities include entertaining an audience. Dance has been a part of my life for years. A way to grow and prosper into a better individual, dance involves training and skill. Taking jazz, tap, ballet and lyrical, dance has been a safe home for me to go to in need. During school and outside of school at Robin Dawn Academy, dance helps me in distress as well as work to becoming a better athlete. Cheerleading is also one of my favorite activities as well. Joining my sophomore year, cheerleading involves stamina and practice. Learning how to stunt and cheer on my
There are different ways how to transmit a message and awake emotions in the audience. Dance, it’s the powerful tool that can evoke excitement, sadness, happiness, comedy and love, all at once. At the Young Choreographer showcase, there were spectacular presentations, but the ones that captured my full attention and admiration were the following performances: Irregardless, Danza Del Fuego and Echos. They had a mixture of rhythms and a wide variety of movements. The emotional significance and technique of the dances will be analyzed in order to understand the massive importance of the origin, motivation and message the dance offered.
I enjoy escaping reality. It’s one of my greatest downfalls, but the rush of euphoria and freedom I receive every time I do so convince me otherwise. Maybe because reality and pain go hand-in-hand, and I’m simply desperate enough to do what I can to elude the dark rings closing in on me. I have my share of methods, and dance just happens to be one of the few that I trust to whisk me away with unnecessary interruptions. It’s a fascinating piece of art—underrated and simple—but it was never supposed to become one of my forever. It was never supposed to teach me anything. It was supposed to just be a hobby I could give up on whenever I pleased. I never imagined I would become addicted to it and the hidden values it held.
The sweet music filling my ears, the adrenaline racing through my body, it was something I longed to feel. As a little girl, all I wanted to do was dance, it was all I would talk and think about but I couldn’t and that was the biggest disappointment in my little mind. Around the age of eight I build up the courage to ask my mom if she could enroll me in dance class, and I remembered my mom looking me in my eyes and saying the words I never wanted to hear “not right now”. I remember her telling me that she didn’t have the money to put me in dance classes.
The people who were involved in this project are the first year BTEC dance students. The show dates were Wednesday 22nd June 2016 and Thursday 23rd June 2016. Aims of this project were to participate in the creation and rehearsal of a group and ensemble piece based on the theme of films. In the beginning I had a hard time finding what topic to do because I don’t do many activities of things that relate to my life. I could only think about things with my family, but none have interesting questions. I eventually chose dance because there are many components of dance that I don’t even think about. I began to wonder; why dance? How does it benefit me?
The Northern Territory is known for its culturally diverse population and some would say it is the ‘multicultural hub’ of Australia. With all of these cultures comes distinctive customs and traditions. Throughout history dance has been used to help people develop a sense of identity, the younger generations are also taught social patterns and values through the different dances. The significance of these traditional dances was to reinforce and celebrate cultural law and practices including the celebration of the passage from child to adulthood or spiritual worship. The predominantly Western culture in Australia often causes minority groups to struggle for recognition regarding their beliefs and traditions. This is parallel to the Australian dance industry, where many cultural dance groups feel they have to justify who they are and are often
“Dance, the art of precise, expressive, and graceful human movement, traditionally, but not necessarily, performed in accord with musical accompaniment. Dancing developed as a natural expression of united feeling and action.”
