Defensive Behavior

We hear a lot about the need to build up our own personal levels or self-esteem or self-worth, especially during our teens and in early adulthood. The reason for this is simple. If our self-esteem is too low or too negative, we will not develop in positive ways or learn to get on with people as we should (often failing to become effective enough at communicating with others, working in teams or helping to manage change for example). The simple idea here is that we can’t readily like others and manage relationships with them well until we can learn how to like and manage ourselves well. Defensiveness is the inappropriate reaction to another behavior as though it were an attack. Low self-esteem and fear are really big contributors to having a defensive behavior. That is why it is very crucial to be able to develop in positive way, especially in the workplace.
When people really like themselves and feel comfortable with their own value, avoiding defensiveness is easier than it is for an individual with low self-esteem. Along with low self-esteem comes vulnerability. This can possibly lead the people to feel like they are being attacked more often leading to a more defensive behavior. Everyone tends to have a defensive behavior sometimes but people with low self-esteem and more fears have a tendency to prove it more often. …show more content…
