Education is a broad term that can be interpreted in different ways depending on what a person thinks of it, how he or she experiences or values it. In my own definition, education is about acquiring knowledge, information, values and experiences formally and informally which can make an individual a better person by changing the way one acts and thinks. Formal education as in learning takes place in school where knowledge and skills are commonly taught whereas informal education in which people are self-taught and they learn values or gain experiences from their daily life. Thus, I think that the purpose of education is to teach knowledge, skills, and values which can be useful for the students no matter how time has changed. I was brought …show more content…

For instance, the knowledge and values I have learnt in primary or secondary schools are still useful and applicable until today. According to William C. Bragley(1874-1946), students should learn the traditional subjects such as Science, Literature, Mathematics and History and these subjects have to be learned explicitly to ensure that students have attained the basic knowledge(Ondego, 2009). Also, Socrates believed that knowledge would lead to both goodness and happiness which clearly show the importance of knowledge(Jamie, 2009). Also, moral values are undeniably crucial as students would learn to distinguish what is right and wrong, to respect others and behave well in daily life. I see values as important as knowledge because I think that peacefulness is crucial in society; as the news reported that the society is chaotic in other countries, I believe if people share the same values, the issues can be minimized. Thus, knowledge and moral values could not be set apart in education as Socrates assumed that people made immoral choices because they did not have knowledge to generate their thoughts and actions (Jamie,
