How many people wonder about holes in the ceiling and cracks on the floor? When did they happen? What caused them? Or what about when you see a cigarette in someone’s hand and ask yourself how do they feel about smoking even though they know it’s dangerous. And even if people do think about these things, why? For what purpose? I guess I do it out of boredom. But is boredom really an excuse? I mean, really, how bored can a person get? I don't believe it is boredom after all, probably curiosity, which can build to all sorts of lengths, and I believe it most certainly starts there. How else can you explain why I want to know what happened to a certain somebody when a certain somebody else, punches them in the eye? I am almost positive it isn’t boredom, but curiosity and that is where and how I try to make sense of this story. It begins on a nice hot October morning, with birds singing and flowers in full bloom, ok, not really. I live in Washington for crying out loud. But how awesome would it be if it worked out that way. It really would put something beautiful into this mesh of words. Actually it really didn't have a starting place, but starting people. A group of friends. All the people in this group and all the people that surrounded this group were a part of my life and some still are. I don't really understand why, but at first I really did enjoy hanging out with these people. I guess maybe because they were 'cool', but I mean we never really did anything cool. So basically we sat around pretending to be cool, because we were considered cool. Or maybe it was just the others that were considered cool. I really don't know, but pretending to be cool was just not all that cool to me. I don't understand how people can hang out w... ... middle of paper ... ...re. Sadly, the infection, the disease had taken over me too. I had officially become part of the crew, in fact that one conversation, everything I hated about myself and anything else bestowed upon me had been poured out, through words on my phone. The girl I told this to was very upset and lost a friend. I went from the loved to the hated in a matter of a fifteen-minute conversation. And quite frankly I was so upset that I really didn't care to speak to any of them again. I decided not to do anything mean (wow, I really had become a bad person if I had to decide not to be mean). So maybe my story was pointless and you don't understand why I think curiosity is the cause of all things and why it kills all, but it killed my friendships, it killed my personality, it killed my life. But then she changed, a little, and we became friends again. Or at least I hope...
Not many people in society can empathize with those who have been in a war and have experienced war firsthand. Society is unaware that many individuals are taken away from their families to risk their lives serving in the war. Because of this, families are left to wonder if they will ever get to see their sons and daughters again. In a war, young men are taken away from their loved ones without a promise that they will get to see them again. The survivors come back with frightening memories of their traumatic experiences. Although some would argue that war affects families the most, Tim O’Brien and Kenneth W. Bagby are able to convey the idea that war can negatively impact one’s self by causing this person long lasting emotional damage.
If there is something that can be said about all and every human being, it’s that they always want to know something. They might not all have the same interests, but even so, they are alway thinking to themselves “why this? why that? how does this work? when is this happening?”. It is therefore the reason why we ask questions. This envy of knowledge, or in other words, this “curiosity” is the stimulus that drives people to go onto quests, and sometimes great adventures. The preceding hypothesis can be explored in Paulo Cohelo’s The Alchemist, and also Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. The thesis will be exploited by primarily talking about what curiosity is, then secondly, it’s ubiquitousness in The Alchemist and Oedipus the king, and finally, by
Poetry has been around for thousands of years throughout human history and has been used as a tool for telling stories from one generation to another. These short passages can describe love, cleverness, hate or war; one can find beauty in them and interpret them in their own personal way. Poetry as the Miriam Webster dictionary describes it “is writing that formulates a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience in language chosen and arranged to create a specific emotional response through meaning, sound, and rhythm”. The poem We Real Cool written by the poet Gwendolyn Brooks gives us this visionary image of a group that share their lifestyle experiences. Ms. Brooks used a variety of rhetorical devices such as assonance, alliteration, anaphora as well as metaphors and archetypes as figures of speech to invoke emotions in the reader.
middle of paper ... ... Our curiosity is what makes our interactions interesting and entertaining. As members of society, it is our innate ability to wander further than what we have in front of us. We want to impose our opinions on everything.
Boredom makes us do crazy things. When you are bored, it is an act of idleness and listlessness. Sometimes we try to alleviate our state of dullness by performing acts that make us excited and give us a surge of energy. According to
The doctor didn’t look so happy when he was inside the room with me. I asked him, “what’s wrong?”, but he didn’t say anything to me. I had a feeling that I am sick with some sort of virus but I couldn’t tell if it was true or not so I asked again. I my feelings were right, he told me “the dog that bit you was contaminated by a virus. We are doing everything we can to try help defeat this virus before it takes over your body because it might kill you, and also you are not allowed to go anywhere and no one is allowed to see you because it could be contagious”. My head was ringing like a bell thinking how long it will take to find a cure for this devastating virus, but this is only the start of it.
Since before even preschool i had had a crush on my best friend Anika Jackson, she was extremely smart, almost to the point of absurdity, her intelligence left mine in the dust, to call her a genius would be the understatement of the century, she was into all the same stuff as me, science physics, fantasy, sci fi, books, computers, star trek, animals, logic, and so much more. She was funny, but in a nerdy kind of way, we were constantly making puns none else got, computer jokes that confused everyone we knew, heck, she even liked my jokes. She was pretty too, she had platinum blond hair, blue eyes, and a face that portrayed an innocence more deeply rooted than even her intelligence. We had been friends for longer than I can remember, and
Boredom is a circumstance that everyone must face at some point. It is a time when one experiences a close proximity with oneself and doesn’t know what to do with oneself in that situation. It is merely an expression of dissatisfaction. Everyone experiences boredom and it is inevitable, but how does one escape it? Boredom must be escaped by doing or even imagining something that one can derive pleasure from. Søren Kierkegaard, in his book Either/Or experiments with escaping boredom and narrows it down to two different aesthetes, which means finding meaning through pleasure. The first is the Reflective Aesthete which is essentially the possibility of doing something, but not actually doing it. The second is the Immediate Aesthete which is essentially
Curiosity is a personality trait that everyone has in some way or another throughout their whole life. How it is defined, however, is up for debate. Many people consider curiosity to be simply a desire to learn and know, but scholars tend to take the meaning deeper. George Loewenstein (1994) describes curiosity as the attraction to information that “confers no extrinsic benefit,” so people tend to delve more deeply into things than would serve to help them somehow. To define it in a more distinctive manner from other traits such as novelty-seeking, one may say curiosity is a, “positive emotional-motivational system associated with the recognition, pursuit, and self-regulation of novel and challenging opportunities” (Kashdan 2004). Are you spending time on Snapchat? Adding pictures onto your profile? And suddenly, the power goes out, and you just get bored. Thinking about all the possibilities of things you can do, but not being able to do those leaves you in a feeling of boredom? Boredom is a problem that gets to the best of us, happening when people lose interest in doing something. Some people may argue that boredom is good for you, but in the end, boredom has more negative effects, eventually being bad for you.
The Scholastic Scope article Is Boredom Really That Bad? and many more articles and studies agree that humans need to be bored more. One specific expert, Mary Helen Immordino-Yang, has stated before that the human brain has two attention networks." One of those two networks is for introspection. That network helps the
One reason why boredom is good for you is that it improves your imagination. For
I said, "goodbye" to the nurse and left that awful place. Outside, I took a deep breath of cool fresh air. I practically ran to get inside my safe car. When back inside i cried in excruciating pain, I couldn't even feel my face. I sat there for a while thinking of those three terrifying words, Dr. Rust's office. I inserted the key into my ignition, turned it and drove away. When I knew I was home safe, I looked into my rear-view mirror. When I saw that old rickety building filled with bad experiences, I realized that that had been the most uncomfortable place I had ever visited, and I surely wasn't going to return.
There a easier and simpler reasons to not be bored. People could listen to music or read a book once in a while. By listening to music people could let their mind be clear and just focus on the music. When reading a book we would just focus on the words on the page. We could take a hike and let nature clear a path for you. Instead of having to deal with boredom we could do things that sound boring , but actually do these things to help us.
Allow me to introduce myself I go by the name of CJ. I’m your average teen with an average life but with a crazy story. It all started one scorching hot morning in late August. I met up with a girl named Mary Doe, who was very special because she was my girl. I first met her in elementary school on the playground and we started off hating each other but throughout elementary and middle school we always had the same classes together until we got to high school where it dawned on me I really loved her and it sucked not being able to see her as often again. I musterd up some confidence and asked her out Freshman year and we have been a unit up until even now in our last year of high school we were so close, at least until we are by ourselves. We argue and fight two male bucks, constantly bumping heads. This girl was also one interesting girl. She had long golden hair that shined as brighter than the sun at high noon. She had long thin legs, crystal blue eyes, and caramel colored skin. She’s everything that I do and don’t want in life so she is like my contradiction but unfortunately I love her.
