Since before even preschool i had had a crush on my best friend Anika Jackson, she was extremely smart, almost to the point of absurdity, her intelligence left mine in the dust, to call her a genius would be the understatement of the century, she was into all the same stuff as me, science physics, fantasy, sci fi, books, computers, star trek, animals, logic, and so much more. She was funny, but in a nerdy kind of way, we were constantly making puns none else got, computer jokes that confused everyone we knew, heck, she even liked my jokes. She was pretty too, she had platinum blond hair, blue eyes, and a face that portrayed an innocence more deeply rooted than even her intelligence. The relationship i had with annika was no less serious than that of two adults that eventually get married. There is a difference between a childhood crush and actual love, but the difference cannot easily be judged by those not in the relationship. Nor can it be judged by the level of romantic acts between to lovers. Annika and I never went beyond a kiss, but still deeply cared for one another. I know of teenage couples that resulted in pregnancies, but had no more emotional depth than two strangers passing each other on the street. Annika and I were in a relationship of mutual love for one another, and as such, the only intimacy that occurred was out of affection, nothing else. So the most intimacy we experienced was the occasional kiss. But unlike many relationships, these came from love and affection, not lust or desire. A relationship for the purpose of bragging rights is not a real relationship. Neither is a relationship for the purpose of getting into someone's pants or having eye candy. These relationships do not, and can never have the strengths of one based entirely on affection. The kind of relationship annika and i had was one such relationship.
