Both 1984 and The Handmaid’s Tale are dystopian novels, however, these books are a lot more complex than mere portrayals of dystopia, it can be argued that they are explorations of dystopia rather than mere portrayals. In order to explore dystopia, many themes must be considered, such as; feminism, love and repression. Nonetheless, it is apparent that human characteristics are the driving point of the two novels, predominantly, the depiction of human resilience. In an imperfect world, it is important to have certain qualities which, if plentiful, it can mean success, whereas if it lacks, it can mean failure, this characteristic is resilience. The protagonists in each novel, Winston in 1984 and Offred in The Handmaid’s Tale face situations which leave them both in disarray, and both even consider suicide. The authors tentatively highlight human resilience, its limits and most importantly its strengths into the two novels.
The Hunger Games was a critically acclaimed movie when it came out; however, some critics would argue that the movie can be sometimes too violent for its intended audience. In this essay I would dissert Brian Bethune’s essay “Dystopia Now” in order to find its weaknesses and compare the movie Battle Royale with his essay.
In addition, the article also says “fiddling with our phones,... adresses a basic human need to cure boredom by any means necessary. I can agree with this because I always like to keep myself occupied whether it's taking out my cell phone or tapping a pencil I am always looking for a way to clear my boredom.
The question I always ask my self is what brings people to want to do drugs? What makes them want to poison their body? When the person knows the health risks of doing drugs, I understand that doing drugs makes you high and feel good, but what in their life is so bad that makes them want to poison their body. In the article listening to boredom by Joseph Brodsky, he says that boredom is the cause of drug habits in people. Because he says that people are trying to escape from it by abusing drugs. I happen to disagree with this however. I feel like that boredom isn’t the cause of drug abuse because I then everyone would be a drug addict. I think it is because of people’s curiosities, and because of that it makes people want to try things ...
One of the main concerns with the world’s focus on a schedule is that children will be bored in their set ways. John
While there is a very sound argument regarding whether or not entertainment had the capacity to ruin society. One must consider that entertainment can be interpreted differently by each individual. Entertainment, in general, can be either beneficial or detrimental to society which varies on the use of all the outlets of entertainment. Although there are negatives that are created from entertainment there are positive factors which arise from music, video games, and television.
Curiosity is an important and powerful trait. It keeps your mind active because curious people are always asking questions and search for the answers in their minds. It opens your mind up to new ideas. When you are curious about something, your mind can anticipate new ideas that relate to it. It takes curiosity to discover a new world of possibilities. With a curious mind, there will always be new things that attract your attention. Pandora in Theogony by Hesiod shows us why being curious can be very dangerous. Although it may seem being curious is such a great and healthy trait because it helps keep your mind active, there can also be a downside to it.
...tead of hours, and we would solve every remarkable mystery in the universe. The brain routinely softens every situation for an individual so that they can move on with their lives to other circumstances. The imagination is the part of the brain that each individual controls. They use this imagination to create a world that satisfies them. When someone encounters an obscurity they mechanically search for an explanation. If an explanation can not be found a person will use their imagination to make-up an answer, even if it is not the right one. Though we think an explanation will make us happy, it is the mystery and the search for an answer that keeps us in high spirits. In short, people have no idea what they need. Sacks and Jenkins demonstrate how the mind’s eye helps people through life, but Gilbert shows that it is mystery and imagination that keeps people happy.
13. Preventing Boredom and filling “free” time: To prevent students from becoming sidetracked and bored, I know it is important to have a continuous flow of activities. To ensure this, I plan all of my lessons with extra activities for unexpected “free” time. These efforts will help ensure that class time is used wisely for furthering education. I feel that the busier I keep my students the less likely they will have time for inappropriate behavior.
To increase the stimulation impacting on me I do different things, like hanging out with friends, going to concerts, listening to music, taking random trips to the beach, going shopping.I like to go out for drives and explore new things. I don’t like quiet evenings at home, or enjoy being bored. As well as staying home and doing nothing. However when staying home, I find something to do such as cleaning the house or rearranging it. What motivates me to be like this? Making people happy and getting to help them, being progressive and accomplishing something to make me feel better about myself is what helps motivate me.
“The Power of Curiosity” is an article from Curious? Discover the Missing Ingredient to a Fulfilling Life (published in May 2010) that can certainly change one’s perspective on their outlook on life. How? The author, Todd Kashdan, explains how curiosity actually has a lot of beneficial traits that we are not aware of, but if we think about it, it is exposed in our everyday life. How was the author so convincing for us to believe that being curious can actually benefit an individual? The purpose of this article was to target those who are interested in a different and healthy lifestyle. Due to the fact that the article was published in a fitness magazine, it was intended to promote a better style of living, therefore it was automatic that the author had to use his words wisely and the way he presented the material. Kashdan uses ethos, pathos, and logos to convince his audience about his argument that curiosity has enhancing benefits towards our lives and that we should involve ourselves towards them.
Shawn T. Smith’s “The User’s Guide to the Human Mind” shows the way the brain reacts and the reason it reacts to certain events, tendencies, and otherwise work against us in functional pursuits. It helps us to understand why we develop anxiety and depression. He suggests us struggling against unhappy anxious thoughts and make friends with our minds. Smith states “your mind is not supposed to make you happy it’s supposed to help you survive.” The brain has bad habits one is avoiding new experiences two is our brain looks for problems that don’t exist. Smith states that the mind is built in such a way that most of its functions and drives lie outside our control.

I used my imagination to find another way to do something when I was bored. I would play with my sister in our bedroom, we first stacked up all the pillows in the room that we were in, then I would try and get on top of the pillow tower. Then as I struggled up the pillow tower, it felt like I was taller than my sister, or even at the top of the world! After that, the tower fell, it felt like I was skydiving, then when I hit the bed I bounced as if I was on a trampoline, then I would lie on my back laughing. Sometimes our mom would be going into the room to check on us, sometimes she says,"Be careful", or, "Clean up when you're done." Sometimes we would get in trouble, or mostly me, because we would do dangerous things without knowing, or we might break things that look nice. We would also mess up our beds, and leave it like that for the rest of the day, but the only times we would clean up is when we would play another game, or we had to eat.
Think back on a time when you experienced something stressful. How did you cope with it? Recall a time when you needed to relax. What did you use to help you? Chances are your answers involve music. The desire to play music while working, studying, or even relaxing is universal. Whether playing the music, singing along, or just listening, music can have many positive effects that aren’t often recognized. Music is unique in its ability to stimulate more than just one brain hemisphere, incorporating both the right and left sides of the brain. Because both sides of the brain are being affected, there are both creative and analytical benefits to making music part of daily routines. It’s no secret that listening to or playing music is enjoyable, but studies have proven that music can boost more than just your mood.
