Are you spending time on Snapchat? Adding pictures onto your profile? And suddenly, the power goes out, and you just get bored. Thinking about all the possibilities of things you can do, but not being able to do those leaves you in a feeling of boredom? Boredom is a problem that gets to the best of us, happening when people lose interest in doing something. Some people may argue that boredom is good for you, but in the end, boredom has more negative effects, eventually being bad for you. In the article, “Is Boredom Really That Bad” by Kristin Lewis, states that there are a lot of things to keep you busy. For example, your phone has social media and games to occupy yourself during those times when you don’t have anything to do, like waiting for the bus or multitasking at breakfast and watching some ESPN. By keeping yourself busy, you can keep boredom at bay, and prevent it from taking over. Boredom can make things happen that will have a negative …show more content…
effect on you or your life, like causing health problems. If you are bored, you have a higher risk of anxiety, alcohol, and drug abuse. The article states that, “Some studies show that people who can’t cope with boredom are more likely to abuse alcohol and drugs.” Because those people are bored, they try new and hazardous things. Boredom can also cause many decision emotional problems too like depression, and not thinking straight. It leads to bad making such as choosing to do something that can injure you. Boredom can also lead to anxiety by letting people overthink sometimes. Boredom can destroy your daily life in many ways because it can lead to gambling, poor sleep, stress, and a higher risk of making bad mistakes.
Someone might get bored and start to gamble, and eventually get addicted, risking his or her life. Boredom may also lead to stress, like when you are overthinking and don’t sleep enough. All these negative effects can lead to a higher risk of making bad mistakes. These problems can happen when you least expect it. Boredom can be good for you in some ways, but it’s mostly bad for you. Boredom can be good for you because you can discover new interests and hobbies but you can keep trying to the same thing and you can get bored of doing it, leading to boredom again. Being bored all the time can lead to bad things in your life. Like the article states, “You are part of a generation that is busier than any other in history. And when you do have a spare moment, there are smartphones, Xboxes, TVs, and computers to keep you
occupied.”
What triggers, and to what severity, drive one to the last resort of risking
According to Emily Yoffe’s essay “Seeking,” pursuing trivial information is something people cannot stop doing. Yoffe posits people become addicted to the feeling of receiving a text message, a new tweet, an Instagram post, or other meaningless multimedia facets (Yoffe 599). She cites an experiment in which scientists put an electrode in a specific part of a rats brain, and when given the option to fire the electrode the rat would do so until it collapsed: scientists believed (and some still believe) that this was the pleasure center of the brain (Yoffe 599). Yoffe believes social media gives us a similar buzz. According to Dr. Panksepp, “Seeking is the granddaddy of the systems” (Yoffe 599). Yoffe explains this is why animals in captivity would rather have to search for food than have it delivered to them. For humans, however, this can be
I have always found ways of doing my homework assignments while doing something else; mainly due to the fact that I am bored or not totally engaged with the subject. I feel the need to fill the empty space that was revolving around in my mind. When I went to high school there were not any type of digital distractions allowed; we had complete and total silence while completing assignments at school. However, when we got home we turned on the latest episode of “Home Improvement” and did our homework with our TV dad Tim Allen. This was a favorite distraction back then, now the cell phones have become a constant in our lives. “Given that these distractions aren’t going away, academic and even professional achievement may depend on the ability to ignore digital temptation while learning” (Paul 720). I have not owned a cell phone in over five years; even though I do not own one, I have seen numerous people in the classroom setting pop in and out of their messages and social networks. I thought to myself while seeing this, how are people focusing on the assignment before them? I still don’t get it but to each their
In the essay, “The Boredom Effect,1952, writer Ellen Ruppel Shell acknowledges the child’s mind and how creative their mind are. The purpose of this essay is to persuade the readers that a child should never be bored and that they should always have something to do with their spare time. She felt that children should taste their freedom by exploring the world. Also, she said guardians should not try to create activities or put them in sports to keep them occupied. Ellen writes “Back then, parents pretty much stayed out of children’s business.” In her thesis, she mentions that parents should let children be bored. I agree with Ellen, parents should let their children be children and let them be creative. However, parents shouldn’t control their
In addition, the article also says “fiddling with our phones,... adresses a basic human need to cure boredom by any means necessary. I can agree with this because I always like to keep myself occupied whether it's taking out my cell phone or tapping a pencil I am always looking for a way to clear my boredom.
It might take your mind off of a subject for a certain amount of time, but the situation cannot be solved unless you take action. For instance, you have a paper due but instead of writing the paper you scroll through social media. The social media takes your mind away from the stress of the paper, but the paper is never going to get done until you put the social media away and begin to write the paper. If you continue to scroll through the social media and not write then you make the paper harder on yourself because you give it less time and thought than it needs. The paper represents reality and the social media represents escapism. Overall, escapism needs to be used in moderation to be effective, and excessive use is damaging like the overuse of social media.
One reason why we feel bored at home is because we have very little expectation of being amused. The environment around us is so familiar to us that we can walk with our eyes closed and still manage to get from one place to another. We do not think that there could be something that can fascinate us. We have been living is this environment for so long that we have become habituated. There may be many interesting things in our home area but we chose to ignore them all. We only focus on the things that matter to us at the moment. This goal oriented observation causes us to miss out on the important details of our home place. Alain de Botton writes, “of the 4,000 things there might be to see and reflect on in a street, we end up actively aware of only a few” (de Botton, 63). We can get away from this blindness if we free ourselves from the goal oriented mindset. There are so many things that we miss in our everyday life. The fast paced life style allows us to achieve more, but it also makes us unaware of the things that we miss out on. Alain de Botton states in the essay, “I walked along this particular road almost every day to reach my underground station and was unused to considering it an anything other than a means to my end” (de Botton, 63). We travel on a same path every day and to us it is just a way to reach our destination. If we see our everyday path with a
The question I always ask my self is what brings people to want to do drugs? What makes them want to poison their body? When the person knows the health risks of doing drugs, I understand that doing drugs makes you high and feel good, but what in their life is so bad that makes them want to poison their body. In the article listening to boredom by Joseph Brodsky, he says that boredom is the cause of drug habits in people. Because he says that people are trying to escape from it by abusing drugs. I happen to disagree with this however. I feel like that boredom isn’t the cause of drug abuse because I then everyone would be a drug addict. I think it is because of people’s curiosities, and because of that it makes people want to try things ...
While there is a very sound argument regarding whether or not entertainment had the capacity to ruin society. One must consider that entertainment can be interpreted differently by each individual. Entertainment, in general, can be either beneficial or detrimental to society which varies on the use of all the outlets of entertainment. Although there are negatives that are created from entertainment there are positive factors which arise from music, video games, and television.
Compulsive gambling is considered to be a type of impulse-control disorder. Even when the addict is aware that their addiction is negatively affecting their life, they cannot stop the impulse to gamble regardless of the consequences. The mental health community distinguishes between problem gambling and gambling addiction. Problem gambling is any gambling behavior that affects your life. Gambling addiction is where the person is unable to resist the impulse to gamble. The must gamble regardless of the consequences. A common myth is that problem gamblers have to gamble every day. When in reality it can be either frequent or infrequent. It is normally cyclic. Where there are periods of gambling, followed by rest periods and then back to gambling. People can go for months without gambling and still be considered to have a gambling addiction (Saison).
Immoderation or anything that grants instant gratification will destroy us. Fast food and junk food are convenient and taste good, but they are unhealthy and if eaten in excess will destroy your body. Watching another YouTube video might sound like a good idea at 11 p.m., but you will regret it at 5:30 when you wake up. Drugs and alcohol might sound fun, but lethal amounts will kill people. Moderation isn’t always easy,
Is Boredom Really That Bad? Have you ever heard the expression "bored to death"? We don't need boredom because it can be self-destructive and lead to alcohol and drug abuse. Therefore, I would agree with those who say boredom is bad but would disagree with those who say boredom is good.
As a result, students can lose concentration. They can start watching TV, exploring the Internet and even sleep. However, if students leave their homes they will be motivated and have fewer distractions around them. In the article Students Demand Longer Library Hours one student stated, ‘“Lamont should be open for 24 hours because it’s the only place where I don’t fall asleep when I’m studying,” says Anthony L. Johnson ’08.”’ Roberts adds, ‘“But the tower in Weld is one of the most creepy places around campus to pull an all-nighter,”” Another Student, Jacqueline L. Roberts ’05 states, ‘“I study in the laundry room because it’s open all the time, and there’s no TV to distract me.”’ (The Harvard Crimson p.2) Most students’ homes have multiple people flowing in and out, doing daily activities. Students are finding just about anywhere quiet to study form ‘creepy places’ to the laundry room. The library can be that one place the entire body of students visit to have a quite study area. An open library can help students have fewer dictations and in the day and age with social media being the major cause for students to lose concentration. “Once concentration has been broken – by checking emails, for instance – it takes 15 minutes to get back into the "work" state of mind. Create a separate profile for study, where you can make use of Internet blocking apps such as Anti-Social.” (theguardian) Stated from
It’s been studied that an average person usually checks their phone about 110 times a day (Woollaston). Finding out this information, I would consider myself a heavy user so I probably check my phone more than 110 times a day and with this information, I can see how I waste time by social media browsing from my phone. In addition to this information, researchers found that if they break it down in a perspective of time, the average user checks their phone every six seconds. I waste a lot of time performing such a simple activity and this does not help me become a better student. “Netflixing”, or Netflix and Chill is a term that means an individual will spend a majority of their time watching Netflix and relaxing. I probably find a very interesting film on Netflix just about everyday and I could literally spend all day watching those films. The movies average about 2 hours in length, and if I watch about 4 movies that’s already a quarter of my day gone. Another big time waster for me as a student and worker is sleeping excessively. I feel as if I have too much to do and when I feel overwhelmed, I would take a nap instead of conquering the task at hand. While doing my social media browsing I came across a picture with a caption that stated, “I’ve got a dream that’s worth more than my sleep”. I really admired that quote because it shows the value and importance of
This refers to student which lose their interest in studying due to addicted over the social media. Not forgetting that they lose the interest in their healthy activities for example in sports. (http://www.worthofread.com/advantages-and-disadvantages-of-social-networking-sites-2/)
