College kids eat all the time and it is very interesting to see them in action at the store. The stereotypes are that college kids eat ramen noodles and drink red bull all day but, with a little observation one might see that all college kids are a little different. The amount of diversity on campus is immense and the campus grocery store is a wonderful place to see it. Language, Food and Culture are all extremely important to a college campus. From the campus cache we can learn a lot about the different types of students we have on campus like what they eat, what languages they use and how they interact with each other.
The campus cache carries a wide variety of foods. A student can find sandwiches, bread, granola bars, fruit, frozen food, a wide variety of drinks, sushi and so much more. Now, one might wonder why there is such a wide variety of food. The answer is, that there is such a wide variety of students that all want different things. Some students want to make their own food and some want to buy pre made frozen dishes. There is so much to be learned about the different cultures on campus just by observing the cache and paying attention to what different students are buying.

Language is essential to communication.
Depending on where people are from and the languages they know they can communicate fairly easily. When someone from another country, like a foreign exchange student, come to campus they might have a problem with this. Everything in the campus cache is in english. All the employees that were observed only spoke English and this is very common in America so, these students must have knowledge of the English language in order to function on campus. Although different languages are not common in the cache, accents are. While observing the cache one might hear many different accents. Accents can affect language even because even though someone is speaking english, it might sound different and cause communication
barriers. Customers in the cache all act differently. Some come in massive groups while others come alone. Certain customers talk to the employees or people they see others are very quiet. Some will dilly-dally and waste time others are going to zip in and out as fast as they can. One can learn a lot from watching how people interact in the cache. Students that zip in and out are probably very busy or maybe shy while those who are very social and take their time probably do not have as much that they need to do that day. It can also be observed that large groups of students walk in all at once. These groups tend to be quite loud and noisy but they also tend to be very quick to get what they need and get out. College kids tend to shop at the campus cache and from observing this environment we can learn a lot from them about their food choices, languages and their interactions with each other. Every college student is different and that means they will eat different things, use language that is specific to where they come from and they might interact differently depending on who they are with and where they are. The campus cache can teach an observer a lot about the different types of students that shop there. There is not one single statement that can be made about college students and the types of food they each because all college students are unique and that is what makes college so exciting.
...College students are the next generation of food consumers just starting to purchase and prepare their own food, setting purchasing habits that will follow them into their lives as they start their own careers. These habits will shape what food is in demand, and therefore what food is produced. Not only do college students hold financial power over the future economy, but they must make the decision of whether to become the next unhealthy generation, that will also indoctrinate their children to accept the level of food quality that is currently labeled as junk food as a standard level quality of food.
Language plays a huge role in everyday life- connotation, denotation, etymology, idioms- all of these things come into play. We as English-speakers sometimes have trouble understanding certain expressions or accents- imagine the Price family trying to decipher French and Kilangan.
When you walk into the student union or the Keathly University Center some of the first things to catch your eye will be Panda Express, Chik Fil A and a few other chain restaurants as long with many small stores with and endless supply of snacks. These are the choices allowed to the students on campus. Where many live on campus and do not have transportation, or they do not have the financial support to go out, so they are forced to dine on campus. While it is any kids dream to have a famous chain restaurant like McDonald’s in their backyard the practicality of such is slim to none, but with the advances society has made it is not only a possibility but a way of life on a college campus. An alternative to these food choices should be available for students. Fast food is not healthy food and right now our health is a big factor in our grades. If you want to be successful in school than you have to make sure all other aspects of your life are also in order, your health being one of the most important. Yet, with personal experience in having worked in a cubicle setting and being a student, I often found myself looking forward to lunch as much to eat as to socialize with coworkers and friends. In a passage of her article, Widdicombe describes visiting Caltech and witnessing dinnertime, in which most “Skurves” were laying out dishes to get ready for dinner. Attending higher education institution for minorities has been an uneasy struggle and one that few minorities accomplish. Recently, the conversation of diversity has become more common because colleges want to demonstrate that they have diversified campus. How would diversity on campus be defined? Most importantly, diversity is more than having an extraordinary personality. Diversity is a must have when it comes to colleges and universities. Diversity is what separates the good universities from the great universities. Universities that have diversity help out their students more than anyone could imagine. It help students get ready to open up and understand one another on a more personal level. Some students grow up in segregated towns where there is not much diversity, but with the help of diversity from colleges, students will learn to learn and accept one another. It would be fresh new start for all of the students to learn about each other and their similarities and differences. The anticipation of attending college floods teenagers with numerous thoughts. Living on their own, going to class when they please, staying out as late as they want, and surviving on food the dining hall provides or what they buy at the grocery store. More free time, or lack there of, may bring students spinning downwards towards bad eating habits and malnutrition. Rolling out of bed five minutes before class means grabbing a coffee on the way. Too much homework or a big project might mean skipping a healthy dinner and cooking some Ramen noodles or snacking on chips all night. This is where the “convenience foods” come in which are factory made dishes or meals that only need to be heated up or need just one or two additional ingredients.
Obesity has risen over the years. The United States now has one of the highest obesity rates. Bad eating habits are usually the cause of this pandemic. For the past few decades, college dorm foods have led to these habits. The more unhealthy food choices are, the harder it is for people to resist these foods. Colleges serve a variety of unhealthy food in their dining halls that contributes to students’ lower GPA. By eating healthier, students can maintain a healthy weight, focus better in school, and increase their school performance to a higher grade point average (GPA).
The nutrients that they get from food are what contribute to help all the systems in their body function properly. In their first year, students are in a transition phase between the kind and amount of nutrients they used to get at home and the ones they are getting in college. Instead of helping students make a smooth transition, the food that is offered in the meal plan makes it rough for them. This rough transition occurs mainly occurs because the meal plan 's food does not have high nutritional value. Consequently, the results of the rough transition reflects on the student 's health, academic performance, and athletic performance. For instance, Kelly Harris, a first-year student-athlete, said, "It would be easier to eat healthier without meal plans, that’s for sure.” When you have meal plans and you can eat at the school’s buffet. People do not tend to eat the healthiest of foods prepared when so many delicious, rather than nutritious, options are served. A correlation between fifteen pounds of weight gain and the college freshman year has been made because of meal plans. Many of the meals provided to students with meal plans are not quality meals, just innutritious food. They are prepared ahead of time and have been sitting out. That does not sound healthy or appetizing to me. I think that eating unhealthy food, such as the food provided by the meal plan, is not benefiting my energy level. It could
Diversity in classrooms can open student’s minds to all the world has to offer. At times diversity and understanding of culture, deviant experiences and perspectives can be difficult to fulfill, but with appropriate strategies and resources, it can lead students gaining a high level of respect for those unlike them, preferably than a judgmental and prejudiced view.
Not only do students save time, but now students have the benefit of having a variety to choose from. Having multiple private food vendors on campus gives students a variety to choose from rather than just the usual. Students typically get tired of eating the same food. For instance, eating the same old breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day can make eating dreadful. Just like when a mom feeds her child last night 's leftovers. Eating just isn 't the same which is why students need a variety on campus. Now that there is a diversity of foods students are likely to stay on campus, which is beneficial if a student has back to back classes. Also, now that students have a variety to choose from, students can replenish their taste buds and keep themselves pleased. One other perk to having a variety is students can have a place they really enjoy. For instance, everyone has a favorite place to go to that is impossible to get sick of, it is very possible
People eat food every day without thinking twice about it, because it is a necessity for us to live. How often do you think about what is in the foods that you eat? How many calories does it have? Are there any vitamins and minerals in it? Is it high in fat? For most of us and especially college students who live a busy life on the go, the answer to that question is probably no. Since becoming a recent graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania Academy of Culinary Arts, I have been more interested in food and what people are eating. Also since more young Americans are becoming obese I want to find out what they are eating and where. Going to college and seeing how students have poor eating habits I want to find out why they are eating this way. Is it because they are away from home for the first time? Or is it because that is the only food that is available for them? I also want to find out if students would eat healthier if it was provided for them? My hypothesis is that students eat unhealthy because it is more convenient for them. There is usually no time to cook a homemade meal and most college students are always in a hurry so it is easier to pick up takeout. Also most college students don’t know how to cook. I also believe that most college students don’t care if the food is unhealthy for them, as long as it tastes good. Hopefully, in the following pages I will uncover the wide world of college eating.
