In my organization I have notices there are two specific cultural differences which include age differential and classification individuals are place into which includes: government civilians, military, and contractor. The military leaders are younger, while the civilians are becoming older, therefore it has causes a communication barrier because of the age. As Hackman and Johnson (2013) stated “Leader can run into serious difficulties when dealing with followers who prefer a different communication style” (p.304). As civilians, most of us understand the lifestyle of the military culture and how they communicate to one other, but some civilians doesn’t like to be treated as a battle bubby. Sometime it is difficult for other colleagues to
ignore the aggressive tones of soldiers. Most of my colleagues will address matter professionally or in the rude ways it was given. I believe that the younger generation has not learned how to separate the two. Some of my colleagues are older and doesn’t like to spoken in a forceful tone, trust me; there are some young leader who are respectable to their elders in the military. Another, is the military culture wants to convey the code of honor, patriotism, and subordination in all that they do, which is great. But, something there isn’t any cohesion between the government civilians, military, and contractor in this Dentac organization. You can see the separation in the three groups; there has even been discusses about it amongst leaders and followers. We are considered as a support unit; therefore, most of our military soldiers are expected to work alongside the civilian and contractor employees. In most cases, they don’t all work alongside one another, because of the senseless little pecking order. For example, the junior enlisted soldier feels they shouldn’t do the work, because the civilians are there to do it. Then, civilian feels that the contractor “red head stepchildren,” need to work first before stepping-up to do anything. I feel as an organization we should use what Hackman and Johnson (2013) recommended “Modifying our attitudes is an excellent place to start” (p.317). However, from what I have discussed previous, I do believe that my organization practice and accommodate their policies to our diverse organization.

The traditions of the Marine Corps date way back since 1775 and the current regulations have been derived from the way marines in the past carried out their day to day activities. It is important for a marine to know and keep in mind traditional customs because one should never forget their heritage, therefore, practiced tradition in the Marine Corps should take precedence over Marine Corps orders and regulations .

Respect to me is admiring someone for their abilities, qualities, or achievements. I think respect is always earned an can never be given. As soldiers soldiers we should always respect our peers because they have made the same sacrifice as us. But as soldiers we should have a higher level of respect for our NCOs because they have done their time an have earned it. Being respectful is not hard it is simple, just treat others the way we would like to be treated ourselves.
Throughout the military and the Army there many different regulations and rules to live by also known as custom courtesies that every soldier must follow in order to show the proper respect order and discipline as they then move on with their daily lives. Custom courtesies are put into place to give the proper respect for noncommissioned officers and the officers placed above them.AR 600 – 25 customs and courtesies is considered to many to be the foundation pillars of military life and major fundamentals to the methods that the Army conducts its business. Some of these fundamentals being as old as the Army itself with many of them coming from past traditions such as the Army values that we base most of what we do on. Many of these traditions having been established due to past military history and regulations that are being formed today in different ways to help soldiers to better understand how the way Army wants them to be acting in a particular manner over a long period of time. These custom and courtesies not only form the way a soldier acts upon his or her professional life but also his or her social life as a way of maintaining discipline. Customs is a means of doing something that has been done over a long period of time by select few for a large group of many. As a courtesy is a form of polite behavior and excellent manners given from one person to another session is saluting or even holding a door for someone. Even when our custom and courtesies are seemed to be strange by civilians is what sets a soldier and a civilian a part on more levels than one. As most of these means of acting are not found in civilian life as it does not require special behavior and maintain a certain level respect and professionalism.
It is 6:00 at night the news comes on story after story delivers crime, anger, death, devastation, and little hope. In less then 2 minutes the broadcaster is able to delivering these stories that are missing layers of information and deep history. The clips are unsettling, incomplete and often bias but it is all that is given and opinions start to form. The news suffers from ethnocentrism, the likeliness to use their culture’s standards to judge other people and actions within another culture, and has a large influence on how their audience perceives and processes information. Through cultural relativism we can shed light on some of these issues, start to understand the big picture, and stop judging.
There are many militaries throughout the world but the US Military is seen as the most professional and capable military in the world. We are perceived this way due to our rules and regulations that have branched from our fundamental principles and doctrine. Uniformity is one of our leading regulations in the military. Uniformity is what makes the military have a professional image. It is the basis of our instructions and regulations concerning the dress and appearance of our military personnel. Recently however, the Pentagon has decided that it is more important to accommodate certain groups of people then to have a professional and uniform military. On January 22nd 2014 the Pentagon passed a new policy that is easing up on the existing regulations by allowing beards, turbans, headscarf’s, tattoos and piercings of religious nature to be worn while in uniform (Pellerin, 2014). This new policy has started a heated debate about whether this is a good idea or not. I myself believe that this policy should not be allowed because it is undermining basic military values, lowering our standards on regulations, and it is a start to a new undesirable military force.
Communication pattern is the structures in which communication flows in an organization. There are different kinds of communication pattern and assumption of cultural difference. The majority of people living in this United State has a different communication pattern which they are used to. But the challenges in this communication difference is that miscommunication will likely occur because there is a significant cultural difference between the communicators. Professionals in the United States Marine Corps stand apart from others engaged in particular careers in the civilian world.While many vocations contain some of the characteristics of professional, a lot of careers do not include all of the elements necessary to distinguish themselves as being as close to a professional as a marine. Professionalism grows depending on the time and service they have in the Marine Corps. A professional has specialized knowledge and skill which can only be acquired through prolonged education and experience. Such skill and experience form the basis of objective standards of professional competence that separate the practicing professional from their peers and measure the competence of such professional. This professional knowledge must also be intellectual in nature.
In Western societies correspondence is immediate and express so the audience does not need to know much about the connection. But this is not valid in numerous other societies where significance is inserted in the way the message is introduced. Military Discipline is a state of order and obedience existing within a command. Self discipline in the military is where soldiers do the 4 rights without being told, even in the absence of the commander. Discipline is created within a unit by instilling a sense of confidence and responsibility in each individual. To strengthen discipline, senior leaders need to give praise to their subordinates, either individually or as a whole, for tasks done well. By doing this, it will accomplish every commanders goal of having a unit that functions well and builds a bond which binds together the team. Everything in life requires some sort of discipline. Whether it is hitting a baseball, learning to sew , playing a musical instrument, making good grades or brushing your teeth it all comes down to a matter of discipline.

The way people communicate varies widely between, and even within, cultures. One aspect of communication style is language usage. Language has always been perceived as a link between people but it can also constitute a barrier. Across cultures, some words and phrases are used in different ways. For example, even in countries that share the English language, the meaning of "yes" varies from "maybe, I'll consider it" to "definitely so," with many shades in between . Furthermore, communication between cultures which do not share the same language is considerably more difficult . Each culture, has its distinct syntax, expressions and structure which causes confusion in intercultural communication. For example , in Asian countries the word “no” is rarely used, so that “yea” can mean “no” or “perhaps”. Therefore, an American traveling to Japan might be considered impolite if he ignores this rule. Furthermore, individuals who are not comfortable with a certain language may not be taken seriously. Such is the case in the classroom, where a student who has a perfect knowledge of the subject in question may have difficulty expressing his idea due to his inability to write properly and therefore he would not receive the grade he truly deserves. Similarly intercultural communication is dominant in the workplace. If I talk with strangers, I will try to guess how old they are to behave in the right way with them. Many times I was wrong by guessing people ages, but as needed, I have to respect opponent people. For example, I was calling my old classmate as a young girl for a year until I knew her age. I deceived by her appearances and personality. She was short and acted like a teenager. Also, her face was too young to think that she was 2 years older than me. Hence, when she knew my reasons, she did not get mad at me. Moreover, if an employee wants to express her respect for me, she will call me as an older person. However, I cannot answer and communicate with her like she is younger than me. I have to react the same way she does to me because that is a rule in Vietnam culture. If I act like she is younger, she will see me as an impolite person.
